fixed or floating point wav - what difference

Using most recent release of foobar2000

Group.

I just noticed when saving a recording in wav format, if I use floating point then
the Nero mixer won't open it.

I wondered if someone can explain what is the difference between fixed and floating point in a wav file?

It would also be helpful if there was some indication on the choices menu what is likely to be rejected by common editors.

Floating point is not widely supported, and current Nero can't handle it. (Will be fixed in a future release).

Floating point can be more accurate and can represent a wider dynamic range.
