Pre-echo on digital (mp3) files?

I wasn't around back then and haven't followed all that closely since I don't listen to classical music all that much.  I'm more likely to hear these instruments while listening to jazz.  Thanks for the insight, though.

Hopefully someone with the ability to identify transient smearing will be able to comment.
