Title: What speakers are you using on your \'good\' stereo system ?
Post by: ChristianHJW on 2002-02-23 21:00:43
Hi, i just wanted to know what kind of speakers you all have at home ... and you have your PC and soundcard connected to them somehow ?

As the poll will only give me 10 options and i normally needed about 20 to make a sensible categorization i'd like you to post a short reply with some comments also, especially if you have self made speakers and probably designed and constructed them by yourself, like what is your background here and what software and measurement equipment were you using, what tweeters/mid/woofers etc. .... thanks

I use four old floor standing speakers that used to belong to my parents.

I think they were purchased some time in the 70's. The brand name on them is Electrophonic (never heard of this company). They sound fairly decent, not too clear but they have a nice warm sound to them and they provide enough output to fill my apartment bedroom with music.

Edit: Forgot to mention how they are connected to my computer.
SPDIF out of SB Live to Denon AVR-1801 to my speakers.

Wow, looks like few have dwabbled in the high-end. I have a pair of NSM Model 50 floorstanding loudspeakers, costing about $1800/pr. Real cherry wood cabinets, sealed box design, bi-ampable, 2 6-1/2" drivers, 1" tweeter in a M-T-M array. NSM is a small company...my speakers have a serial number of #145.

But the audiosnobs would condemn my playback chain:

Sony XA-3ES CD player -> $15 RCA interconnects -> Onkyo TX-DS474 receiver -> Home Depot bulk speaker cable -> NSM Model 50s. No quality problrms with the cheap cables or the receiver.

My PC isn't hooked up to my stereo as of now...I plug my HD-600s into the sound card.

Infinity OWS-1 wall mount speakers with a KLH sub in the family room.

Sony V6 currently plugged into a SB Live on my PC. Sometimes they are plugged into the main stereo.

Perhaps I don't have the best ears, but I've never been able to distinguish a good $400-$500 set of speakers from a good $1500 set of speakers.  In fact I'd guess the imperfect acoustics of my family room contribute more to degradation of the sound than the speakers do, so unless I'm going to move to a house specially designed for optimal acoustic properties...

I didn't realize Denon and Klipsch loudspeakers were not considered "high end." Maybe not the Denon, but above middle-of-the-road, nonetheless...

B&W's $600 602S2 bookshelf speakers in a decent room, coupled with a decent amp and a good sub that's been properly tweaked(mine's a Velodyne FSX-12) will keep up with most higher end stuff.  Of course, for Good stable stands I paid $150, and the Velo was $900 (it's discontinued and can be found for around $600 now)  What you really get with the higher end speakers is less distortion, less coloration, quicker low-frequency response, better stereo imaging (I can actually picture the environment a good jazz or classical recording was done in based on auditory cues with the 602's), better spatial depth, etc.  The 602S3's do an even better job for the same price, but you can probably find the S2's discounted a bit now too.  The 602's actually sound as big as most floorstanders, but without a sub, you won't get a floorstander's low end response.

For the average home listener who never sits down and really listens to their music a good system is a waste.  You have to enjoy listening enough to spend time in the speakers' "sweet spot" instead of just playing stuff in the background.  For me, spending $1000 on the various cabling was worth the price, most people never take the time to hear the difference though, so it doesn't matter as much.

Denon is decent, and in the broad range, would fall into the "middle of the road" category.  Technics and the like sit at the bottom, Denon/Yamaha/Onkyo/Harmon Kardon sit in the middle and on the top end you have things like McIntosh, B&K, Classe, Proceed, Meridian and Mark Levinson.

Klipsch likewise sits in the middle, along with Infinity and other mass-produced big name manufacturers.  The top end is reserved for things like Wilson, Genesis, Magneplaner, etc.

for mp3/monkey's audio, i use the horrific analog out of my soundblaster 5.1 digital (saving up for a better soundcard and DAC, but it's not a huge priority at the moment), into my nad 1155 preamp, into my hafler SE240 (120wpc@8ohm, 200wpc@4ohm) amp, then either into my Stax SR-Xmk3 headphones, or my Magnepan MG-IIIa speakers.  The ribbon tweeter is relentless on MP3 artifacts and such.  Unfortunately the ribbons are in Minnesota being rebuilt, and I've been maggie-less for a while now.  Very depressing... ah well...

My normal CD player is an old Sony CDP-620ES.  Laugh all you want, it sounds pretty good!

My equipment isn't up to par with my speakers, as I spend all my money on stuff for my bass guitar fetish

Delta AP 2496 -> Behringer Eurorack 1602 -> old secondhand Philips amp -> JBL Control CM-52 speakers...

Quite happy with the speakers for my small room, though the amp is in need of an upgrade, or at the very least a good internal dusting off...

I used to know the model #'s but anyway,  my best speakers are actually in my vehicle where I do most of my MPC listening.  All 6 are top-tier Pioneer speakers with a sub.  Top-of-the-midline Alpine EQ(without the gigantic graphic display) going to Alpine amps(now). The soundcard in the MPC'puter is a SB128. Good enough for me.

^^ nice. mmmh Arcam

<--  wants AudioPhysic's Medea speakers    (eh, lemme dream)

Marantz CD67OSE > good (but cheap) shielded RCA interconnects* > Yamaha AX1090 > Oehlbach bulk 4mm² interconnects (bi-wired) > Infinity Kappa 8.2i (interesting four-way construction...)

* the el cheapo cables beat any other cables I've tried up to $200 (mainly out of curiosity )

the Kappas are a bit slow in the midrange when played at low volumes, and if I turn up the volume, the room (basically too small) limits the chain's performance

should've gone with JBL TI5000 and that one Rotel 9?? amp... sounded very nice at moderate levels

no connection to the computer, btw. (another stupid SBLive user. )

I am looking at buying a pair of these, but I have to drive 500 miles before I can listen to them. I dont think they would be too realistic without a subwoofer but I am covered for this.

Currently using a pair of Sony G-5's. Nice image but need some help to tone things down from 4 to 8 khz. They are 25 years old and can no longer be pushed and still sound tight.

Make sure you listen to the 602S3's.  B&W seems to have done some slightly nicer things with the low end response between the S2 and S3's.  If you're not looking for club level response, they actually sound decent and have a good amount of excursion for as small a driver as it is.  My Velodyne (probably a little underpowered for the setup) will actually start distorting due to overextension before the B&W's will.  When I compare with sub versus without, they certainly lack, but on their own if I walk up to them cold they usually do a pretty good job.  Moral is, a sub is certainly something you can add later and I'd recommend a good sub over a cheapo sub since cheapo subs tend not to blend so well.

Nearest dealer is in Winnipeg Canada, so I will likely be listening to whatever theyhave in stock. I have a very musical Paradigm sub which is frequency and phase tuneable so I hope to be able to blend things adequately.

I have heard that these speakers image very well, and I am most sensitive to this.

I have heard that the nautilus tweeters can be somewhat sharp when coupled with a japanese negative feedback reliant amp. Do you have any experience with these speakers in such a situation?

Not entirely sure what you mean by that, but I'm powering them with a 100wpc Yamaha HTR-5460 and they sound good to me.  I would say they're slightly more biased towards highs than the setup I listened to in the store with a stereo Denon amp.  The 602S3's certainly emphasize highs less than the S2's though.  I can't call myself an audiophile, but I was quite impressed with how good the S3's sounded to me after just listening to the Nautilus 800's hooked up to about $20K worth of amp and CD player.  Consider that one setup was $1600 and the other was $36K, I found it very impressive.

I'd imagine your dealer has the S3's in stock by now, but if they don't, give the S2's a listen and if you like those, get the S3's from someplace else.  I guarantee you won't regret it.  It's the same sort of thing, but more refined.  The S2's are the best $600 I've ever spent, and now I'm trying to figure out how I can upgrade to the S3's on my currently tight budget.

ChristianHJW,

On the topic of the poll (as opposed to speakers themselves), it would be nice to have a new poll which scales a bit lower on the price scale, since > 65% of the people are in the sub-200 factory-built category...

Running off what used to be audiolab pre and power combo (now MacClaren - they should have stuck to cars - grumble) outputting to a pair of old Mission 751's - this set up through SonicLink Grey cable seems to give the right clinical presentation of the music that i prefer - rather than the slightly warmer overall feel from say the Arcam set up - but this does have the advantage of showing up the nuances of 128 vs VBR 160 - 192 encodes on complex pieces as the top end on the 128 goes all to hell - the right combination of amp andd speakers seems important as if the components are not matched through some pretty thorough listening to a range of music - it can lead to an overly warm or 'bright' sound or alternatively a very compressed output - good cable and interconnects are also key

For top end speakers the likes of Mission / Castle / Monitor Audio have a good reputation

They're Swedish. Don't bother trying to find them on the web, couldn't find them either. I found them in one of those high-end stores here in Holland. They're not high-end (like electrostats driven by Beard amps), but more top midrange. If you can find them in Argentina, give them a listen. Well worth your trouble.

Dynaudio Gemini kit, bookshelf, 1500 €

See http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showth...=&threadid=2342 (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2342) for the rest of the gear.

The filter has a resistance in option that tunes the treble level.
Default is +1.5 db, and adding the resistance, it is possible to get 0 or -1.5 db.

As the sound wasn't very good with a resistance added to the filter, I equalize with Shibatch' super equalizer : param. -1.5 db from 2000 to 20000 Hz.

I also use the plugin to kill a resonance around 50 Hz in the room :
-10 db to the left from 42 to 58 Hz
-30 db to the right from 40 to 62 Hz.

The speciality of these speakers is to play low frequencies without distortion, unlike most bookshelf speakers. I played a 16 Hz sine at a normal level without the speakers making any noise. Their response must be about 40 Hz. Lower frequencies are played, but attenuated until about 33 Hz, where there's nearly nothing left.

It is possible to get a 23 Hz, at high level, but I think it's a semi-resonance in my room : the 6 meters 50 Hz resonance must resonate at 25 Hz when the window is open at the other end (speaker near the wall, window open near the opposite wall).

The computer (Marian Marc 2 soundcard, rough ancestor of the audiophile2496 and Terratec EWX) is connected with an external DAC (Sony DTC 55ES), through an Arcam Diva A85 ampli (1200 €).

What, do you think us poor graduate students can afford speakers that cost 2000 UKP? Actually, I own a pair of Energy towers (Acoustic Reseach Labs, Canada) that perform very well for being only 500 USD a pair. I also have Energy XL-20's compacts as my rears (about 350/pair). For the low end, I have a 12" 200W Infinity bottom-firing sub. I'm running them from an 8 year-old Yamaha natural sound 5-channel reciever that I got from some guy (used) for 200 bucks. Sound on a budget, gotta love it! I can't wait to finish my Doctorate and buy some real components (if the old lady lets me)!

Mostly canadian stuff here

PSB Image 2B Bookshelves front
PSB Image 1B Bookshelves rear
Paradigm PW-2200 Sub
And a Yamaha RX-V496 hooked to my sblive 5.1 /w digital coax

The PSB Image 2B's were the best I heard out of the under $800 cdn range (paradigm, energy, mission, b&w).  Not only that, I got a major deal from the salesman at A&B sound and got them for $350!

And I grabbed the PW-2200 off a friend who needed cash bad  Retails at $800 US, and I got it for $450 cdn.  Its a damn nice sub, I'd recommend it even if you have to pay alot more than I did.  I found paradigm's lower-model subs are pretty underpowered and boomy though, so avoid those if possible.

Only very few people were in the lucky position to demount a pair of old Altec speakers from a closed down cinema ..... i envy them !!!

My best speakers are in my Grado SR-60 headphones...

Actually I'm a headphone junkie... I have no 'real' speakers, and 4 pair of headphones (not counting the crappy ones lying around that I'd never use).

* Grado SR-60
* Koss KTX-Pro
* Denon AH-D550
* Denon AH-D210

The only speakers I use are PC speakers (Altec Lansing ACS45.1 ca. 1999), and lately I rarely even hook those up anymore (headphones are always plugged in).

Edit -- why the hell do they make the cord on the Grado SR-60's so short?  Every day I nearly strangle on the damn things.

Hate to disappoint you, but even if I end up with a "70's analog system" it's likely to be used only with a pair of headphones.  I'm serious, not only do I keep strange hours (can't crank stuff at 3AM at least on a weekday), but when I first moved in here & played stuff at a *moderate* volume the neighbors called the police... TWICE!  And they came to the door.

TWICE!  And they came to the door.

I don't know about the US, but here in Canada the police only respond to noise complaints after 11 pm.  Then they bring a decibel meter and if you are higher than x decibels you are issued a ticket (not sure the decibel limit).  Seems a pretty civilized way to do it; I mean as long as you don't keep your neighbours awake all night, its just part of the inconveinience of apartment living.

Both the times the police came by here were after 9PM (I think the problem was due to a subwoofer), but even playing music loudly during the day or early evening won't endear anyone to their neighbors around here.  Most of the people living in this condo complex work a lot of hours & want peace and quiet when they get home, I guess.  I'm actually rather out of place living here, but my parents own the condo & I get "extra primo good" monthly rent price from them...

Speakers: B&W 802 Matrix III
Amplifier: Rotel RB-991 / Rotel RC-972
DA Converter: Sony DAT recorder
Soundcard: Terratec EWX 24/96

The terratec has no official coax output but a 5 volt output parallel on the toslink connector. With 2 resistors and a capacitor I have a coax spdif output.
With something more than the standard 0.5 volt output.
Connect it with 12 meter of 75ohm coax to my Sony DAT recorder.

Audigy + Labtec's Pulse 424 give me a very clean, real and transparent sound.    Bass is superb.

In fact, below US$150, my great system gives me a far better sound quality than many Sony or Panasonic mini-hifi.

Hi. I had a pair of B & W 602 s2's. They sounded so great I bought a pair of cdm 1nt B & W about three weeks ago.

They are incredible but the nautilus tweeters are a little sharp sounding in my living room, which is why I have been on about equalizers lately.

The imaging ability of these speakers is absolutely erie at times.

and with some time & effort.. + a small amount
of money... you can get a lodspeaker system.. worth..
between: 1 to 5/8000 $. (real value)

let`s say:
800$ in elements
300 in crossovers (simple 3-way 3-order LR filter)

and that`s a expensive modell..

Mine's a design proposed on the DIY speaker mail list ("Bass" list at the time) that ended up with
some group purchases of compenents, so there are a few of them around. varying a bit in the details of the
baffle and woofer enclusure:

5 foot Carver ribbons in open dipole baffles  (as used in Carver Platinum and Genisis I)
NHT 12 inch woofers (as used in their SW3 sub and their top-line speaker)
biamped with  an active crossover designed by an engineer at Carver.

A pair of 15 year old Technics.  Part of a complete hi-fi system, but I would estimate them to have been around the $400 mark

I hope to build my own pair for ~$200 when I have the time, have learnt a little more and have access to decent software for testing

M-Audio Delta 410 Soundcard (Analog out )

1973 Revox Preamp
1973 Revox Power Amp
1976 3-way Revox Speakers (80W) soon to be changed for Infinity RSII (1983)

BTW: bought all the Revox stuff (I was born in 1979 so these are older than me...) for $300 but wouldn't trade it for $1000 worth be it Technics, SONY or whatever crap like this two I mentioned. Sound better than my friend's setup (HK Amp + Infinity Alpha Speakers - new).

I have a Denon AVR-1603 receiver powering my Canadian-made Energy Take5.2 speaker system (it's called 5.2 because there was a previous Take5) ... I am sure most of you haven't heard of Energy, but they compete with Bose over here. My satellites are quite small, but sound phenomenal, especially considering their size and price range.

i have the front speakers mounted to the wall, the rear speakers on stands behind my couch, and the subwoofer in the corner. I bought a package deal at Bay Bloor Radio in downtown Toronto, which came with a free Panasonic DVD-RV32 dvd player, and 120' of Monster Cable for my speakers.

I connected my dvd player via optical and s-video, my digital cable box is using digital coaxial for digital audio, stereo rca for the analogue, and s-video. my computer has an SB Live Value hooked up using stereo RCA-headphone cable.

Everything sounds fantastic, except I have to boost the subwoofer channel by an extra 3db when listening to music from the computer. When playing CDs in my dvd player, there is quite a bit more bass... not only louder, but deeper in range. It is quite annoying.

Sound Lab Pristine electrostatics or. when I want it LOUD, KEF 104/2's.  Drive 'em with two halfer mono bridged 500's generating 1000+ watts per channel.  Yes, it does play Funktown, the Saint-Saens Organ Symphony and just about anything else plenty loud.  Just look at the bottom of those old Stones record liners where it always says either, "Play it loud" or "Turn it up."

Huh?

brand to prove the genious of the open baffle...
to the consumer marked..

and thereby opend up.. for Broadband loudspeakers..

when it comes to nad..
well. 7140.. sounds old..

i got a 3240.. in 88-89 i think

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place at the moment. I have both the Monitor Audio S8's and S10's on trial and can't decide which I want to go for yet. Some music sounds better on the S8's, other music better on the S10's. I'll vote if and when I make a decision.

Audiophile 24/96 > Arcam Diva A85 > MA S8/S10

I did try Kef Q7s too, they went back within the week, the S10's were alot better.

Find a speaker that sounds best with both classic music or the latest Dr Dre hit (sorry, don't have anything else in mind). But having in mind that almost anything these days is able to boom and melt the wax in your ears with treble, look for tight bass, clean highs and MOST important - MIDS - the music has to have presence.

So if one speaker performs better in vocal range or the instruments in a classical piece 'come out' nicer than the other then pick up that one, you'll get used to the sound in time.

something is missing.. in the marked.

some manufacturers.. (hi-end) usualy give you
a certificate with the speakers.. + a pampflete
over the components, design, building material..
and the benefit from it.
(ex: sonus faber) who actually.. build cabinets..
after the "instrument" method..
(a loudspeaker IS a instrument..)

if all serious loudspeakers in the store..
had something like that..
you could easely have filtered out 60%
of the sheap builds.. on the marked.

I have used for almost 7 years B&W P-4 (IMHO superb value for money), but have switched recently to Sonus Faber Concerto Grand Piano. Expensive for sure, but really classy stuff, and not picky on the program- a real allrounder. My wife just LOVES the looks of it too!
On my puters I have Acoustic Energy Aego 1 (+Echo Mia soundcard) on the "good" puter, and Microsoft Soundsystem 80 (+Turtle Beach Santacruz soundcard) on the second one. Both perform quite well- regarding their pricetag.

Very nice.  And yes, they are pretty.

I use the following:

Speakers: Definitive Technology BP2000tl
Amp: Sherwood Newcastle AM-9080 (120w x 5)
Preamp: Acurus Act-3 (sold my beloved Anthem AVM-20    )

DefTech speakers are known more for their abilities in a home theater applicaton.  Their bipolar design (3 drivers fire forward, 3 identical drivers fire toward the rear, plus a 15" 500w sub in each tower) creates a very wide image.  They do work well with music but you need to spend some time with the set-up as they need a lot of room to really sing.

I am using Sony ss-535 AV speakers connected to a Jolida integrated tube amp.  I know this combination sounds rediculous but I have yet to find a set of speakers I enjoy more.  I am working on building a computer to connect to the amp but I have yet to learn enough to get LAME work automatically with EAC.  I am waiting until I can make better hardware and configuration choices to make the connection.  Personally I think my ears are turning to tin but I guess you have to use what works.

My home rig is my pride and joy

Digital Front-end is a Krell MD10 Transport / Studio Dac

Analog Front is is either Rega Planar 3 / RB300 / Sumiko Blue Point MCor Pro-Ject RPM9 / 9c Carbon Fibre Tonearm and Ortofon Rohman MC

Audiolab 8000Q Preamplifier and EAR 834p Phono Stage (3 x ECC83s).    The Audiolab was A/B'd against a Musical Fidelity A3cr earlier thois week and it walked all over it!

Power amps are a pair of Tube Technology Genesis Monoblocks with Gold Aero E34Ls running in Superlinear at upto 100watts output.    Alternatively I can use a pair of Rotel RB970s bridged into Mono giving upto 180watts output.

Speakers are ProAc Response 1SC on Target R4 Stands.  Alternatively I have Spendor SP3/1s, Quad 77-10ls and KEF Q15.2.

Speaker Cables are QED Genesis Silver Spiral with WBT Spades, QED Silver 12 with Arcam plugs.  Interconnects are Chord Chorus, Nordost Red Dawns, Van Den Hul D102 III's and Chord Prodac.

Headphone amp is a Sugden Headmaster with Sennheiser HD580/600/25/PX200, Grado SR60, and Stax Lamda Nova Basic

Killer System.    I don't listen to much on my computer as I generally just use it for transferring stuff to NETMinidisc for listening whilst out and about.

My front speakers are a pair of KLH 609S's (doesn't mean much to me) that I found at a place called Liquidation World, $100 for the pair... they're powered by a 50-watt 'Modulaire' amp that looks c. 1970's (I found it in the basement; it's older than me :P)... the rears are the pair Realistics I found with the amp, and they're powered by (get ready for it) the right one of a pair of reallyreallyreallycheap plastic computer speakers with a headphone-out jack on the front (I just know I'm gonna get flamed for that ;)

And, supplying all that cheap stuff is an SBLive Value. Somehow, it all works out...

I've heard much more expensive systems than mine, and they do sound appreciably different (in some cases very different), but to my ears I wouldn't say they sound any *better* as such, just 'more expensive'. Maybe I'm just too accustomed to this setup? But the nice thing is, it has this weird ability to make some pretty crappily encoded stuff sound good... I compared on some high-quality headphones and on the phones I could easily tell that 128kbps MP3 sucked compared to 160 or 192, but played over speakers it's almost imperceptible, in a good way. I can tell the difference between Ogg and MP3 though (the former sounds much nicer).

We have mostly "old but good" equipment about 15 years old.

Yamaha CA-810 amp
Onkyo T-4090 quartz locked AM-FM receiver
Sony NC615 DVD-CD player (got in 2002)
Technics M224 tape deck
ADS 710 22" speakers
Signal Audio Analog Two interconnects (new)
Signal Audio speaker cables (new)

For phones:  JMT-built META 42 headphone amp; Senn HD580 and Alessandro-Grado MS-1 phones; DiMarzio interconnects to the Yamaha amp.

We like the sound generally, although the speakers aren't very revealing. Wonderful sound through the META42amp and the phones. Thinking of getting new speakers, but my wife isn't very interested, will take some negotiating.

I've been using Dunlavy SC-III's ($4000US) for the past few years and they are superb.  Here's a listing of the associated equipment:

Analog - VPI HW-19jr TT > McCormack Micro Phono Drive
Digital - Pioneer DV-525
Pre/Pro - Angstrom 100
Amp - McCormack DNA 0.5
Sub - Genesis Servo 12M

I've been very pleased with this system's performance.  I'll most likely update/upgrade some components at some point, but the Dunlavy's are keepers.

Reciever - Kenwood VR-505 5.1 with 500w
Speakers - KLH L853B Bookshelf Speakers w/ 8in woofers, 3in mid & 1in tweeter ($20 for the pair  )
Center / Surround Speakers - Kenwood KS-205HT's (3in single speaker units, ported)
Subwoofer - Kenwood 8in (Front firing, ported, non-powered)
Subwoofer Amp - Marantz PM325 2-Channel Stereo Reciever
Sound Card - SB-Live Value 1024 w/ Foobar resampling
Speaker Wire - Bulk 16ga
Interconnects - Cheap........

This system is by NO means high end, but sounds surprisingly good for it's total price of under $300. The Kenwood receiver, surround speakers and subwoofer were part of a home theater in a box system  . The base system lacks treble and bass of any type (you need tweeters and a powered subwoofer for that.) By adding the Marantz amp to power the subwoofer, the bass is more than sufficient to fill the 12*12 room the system is located in. As for the KLH speakers, I am impressed with their quality. Originally, they had an MSRP of $100 to $200, but when they were at Best Buy for $10 each, I couldn't resist  . They have a very strong bass (they are not ported) and pretty good overall frequency response, although the midrange is lacking slightly. I have heard my neighbors system, which cost him around $3000 wholesale two years ago (he sells and sets up professional audio equipment for studios and the like, gets his equipment wholesale, and has a killer setup at his house), and I can assure you that there is not $2700 difference between his setup and my own  B) . And he knows what he is doing  . In the future, I hope to upgrade my center channel speaker and get a 12in powered sub for the system.

One of the reasons why I am looking into good headphones with low SNR. I have even been plugging in my headphones into my receiver for movies and TV so as not to disturb my upstairs and across the hall neighbors if I am watching movies late at night.

I have many more feet of the cheap 14WAG stuff meaning I can route it more effectively.

Yeah, I know...  Depressing.  No one makes speakers quite like them.  There are still Dunlavys on the used market from time to time.

I do notice though you are working dilligently towards one.  Keep the 70's analog system going.  You won't be dissapointed.

i'd like you to post a short reply with some comments also,

For PC, I'm using an old model Altec which my friend gave me, sounds ok but for gaming or easy listening MP3 only. Some of the frequency was "enhanced", I didn't like that.

I've another serious listening setup with EL34 vacuum tube amplifier which sounds much more fidelity but I don't think I'll connect it to PC. The EMI and RFI will colorize it's sound nature.

Since this a poll that's been drudged up from the past that I haven't voted on, here goes.

The total sum cost of my "good" speaker setup will be in the neighborhood of $1200 (not counting receiver).  However, the keyword here is Stereo speakers.  I use Ascend Acoustic CBM-170s on the main stereo set, which cost about $330 or so.  I've posted on this in other threads, so this should be no big surprise.

The $500 question is whether Christian wanted to know about my subwoofer, which is always in use with these speakers (Hsu VTF-2).  I would not consider my speakers to be complete without it, but you get the picture.

Other speakers in the setup are Ascend Acoustics CMT-340 for center and two no-name speakers for surround.  One day I may replace them with another set of Ascends (yeah, I'm a fan), but it's not as important to me as my other wishlist items.

P.S. - I have another set of speakers hooked up to my computer made by a company called Design Acoustics (an Audio-Technica company), but I can't find any other information about it.  Does anyone know anything about it?  Thanks.

Nice to see some B&W owners in the house.

I have the DM602S2s as well. It goes something like this:

PC -> Ethernet -> Xbox Media Player -> Optical out -> Marantz SR5000

I have a B&W ASW500 subwoofer as well...it's 5.1, but I can't remember off the top of my head what model the center/satellites are. One of these days I'd like to use something better than my Xbox to play my music (LAME -aps), but I haven't found anything to throw in my home theater that'll support APE.

okay... bear in mind i bought this when i'd just got out of highskoo (with the pittence i made at a computer warehouse).

CD Player:  Yamaha CD-29 (old '80s hulk that doesn't work on CDs pressed after 1999... i now use a DVD player that miraculously has DTS onboard)

Amp (what the hell is a preamp??):  Yamaha A-520, 65 wpc @ 8ohm, big dents on the front, phono button must be held in...

Turntable:  not that it matters for fidelity, but it's a Pioneer PL-200, direct-drive with Stanton scratchie cartridge that hisses on loud treble.

Speakers:  Jensen DX-7, 130 watts (6 ohm), 35-24000Hz (that's what the back says )

Cables:  who gives a flying blank about cables?  can you really hear a difference?  these are thick, oxygen free copper.  i dare all-o you audiophiles to an ABX battle with the above system and more expensive cables

EQ: (i found when i got the speakers that i didn't need the EQ anymore ) Kenwood something-or-other, 7 band.

all the above (except the cables) came from 2nd-hand dealers, and i really don't want to know where they came from before that

total cost of the above:  $1200 AUD

Well, I live in an apartment, so my most frequently used speakers are the 18mm voice coils in my Sennheiser HD-590's.

But my home theater uses a Bose Acoustimass 10 system.      (~$1100)  And yes, they're getting replaced soon, probably with something from B&W or Martin Logan.

And the actual "speakers" attached to my preferred listening platform, which is the Echo Indigo soundcard in my notebook PC, are Klipsch ProMedia 2.1's.  (~$250)

I have a pair of Technics SB-F1mk2 speakers, which my parents used to use.

They're small, sitting on my desk. I can't find much info on the net, other than that they were built in the early 80's, and cost about 200 dollars back then.

I like them a lot - bombproof build quality, with very stiff and heavy cabinets, and the 'honeycomb discs' (whatever that means) produce a very bright kind of highs, which I like especially (lady singers...).

Only one complaint: the connectors on the back (both 8ohm and 4ohm) are of the spring-loaded clamp type. My speaker wire constantly flips out of it

My main speakers are a pair of 80's JBL 240 Tis.  They're 3-ways with a 14" low driver, and one of the best tweeters that JBL ever produced.  They weigh about 85 lbs apiece and have gorgeous teak cabs.  Picked them up off eBay a few months ago for ~$300 ( they were $2k when new ).  Couldn't be happier ( although my neighbors might disagree ).

My main listening chain is an Adcom GFP-555 pre-amp into a Hafler p3000 power amp, inexpensive Yamaha 5-CD changer and an old B&O turntable.  No fancy cables.

I have my main stereo hooked up to my computer via the line-out on my SB Live!.

Genesis Physics (model II) purchased new circa 1977 for around $260/pair.  They came with a "lifetime warranty", but since the company went bankrupt in the 80's, the warranty is worthless.  When the drivers disintegrated about twelve years ago, I was fortunate to find a supplier of replacement drivers at a reasonable cost.  So I'm still in business with these old puppies, glad they're still working ... BUT part of me wishes they would die a clear death so I would have an excuse to go shopping for a new pair.

Here are some photos from the guy who makes the replacement drivers:

My System is all homebrewed stuff:

Live! Digital Out > Homebuild DAC (based around CS4334) > Homebuild Elliot P3A > Homebuild 2 Way monitors (GR Research Woofers and Morel tweeters).

It sounds really good for how much it all cost me (about ZAR4000). I am planning on replacing the Live! digital out with a USB 24/192 DAC of my own design - still busy routing the board for that one though.

I also have a Logitech Z560 set for watching movies (and listening to Doef-Doef music) as my little bookshelf units don't really represent below 55Hz.

Linn Keiledhs driven by a Creek CD player and bi-amped from an Arcam 7 Integrated (tweeters) and an Arcam 8 PowerAmp (woofers).

The Keiledhs had the warmest and most accurate sound I found in their price range, and far beyond any lower priced speakers I demoed at the audio store I bought them from.

I had considered going with NAD for the amps due to a warmer and more robust sound when paired with the Linns.  However, looking at the NAD I had a feeling they just wouldn't stand up to long term use like the british made Arcams.

I did try Kef Q7s too, they went back within the week, the S10's were alot better.

lucpes post reminded me I didn't clarify in which direction I went (if anyone cares, heh).

I settled on the Monitor Audio S8's. After sitting down with a friend for some extended listening sessions we came to the conclusion (well, more I did) that we really couldn't reliably tell the difference between the two unless cranked up really loud. Even then I couldn't swear the difference wasn't in my head

40 watt Sansuis from the 70s or 80s that still sound amazing. Sansui Amp, too., repaired once, and the tech said that there was a lot of life in it still

but i gotta say, nothing pisses me off more than "computer multimedia speakers" .. even those $400 Klipsch 5.1 speakers (the old type, not the newer ones with even tinier speakers) are boarderline .. bleh. i need a 6" and a hq tweeter, now that i have half decent speakers in my car... hell, they're probably better than all the speakers in the house

Yamaha AX-590, Canton Ergo 100DC speakers, Sony CDP-511, Sony DTC-690

Don't know if the stereo system can be called "good" but the speakers surely are, huge difference over cheap (=< 500 EUR/pair) ones. I think good speakers is one of the best investments in hardware where difference is really audible. And they last forever, sort of.

BTW, interconnects are the ones that came with the devices, and my speaker cable is some cheap wire from the electronics store .
Maybe I should buy that mysterious "12 gauge" but I have no idea how many mm² that actually is or how it would be called here.

edit: yuck, I accidentally clicked "null vote", can anyone reset this? Doh..

It's somewhere in the region of 2 to 2.5mm diameter wire. Just make sure you have clean, unoxidized, tight connections (no push connectors please!) and everything should be ok. No need for the audiophile-gaga wire

Currently using a pair of Mission 733i floorstanders which I've had for around 6 years or so now.  Excellent sound; they cost £330 when I bought them.  They're not currently connected to our PC at home, preferring instead a slightly smaller pair of Creative Labs numbers instead.

The Missions have a great sound, at home with all types of music, so ideal for us.  They're partnered with a Rega P3 t/t, Marantz 6010-KI amp, Denon TU-260L tuner and, last but not least, a Kenwood DP7090 CD player.

The price level's all mid-range (£400) except the tuner (£80-£120 depending on where you buy).

If I was planning to change anything, it'd likely be a new cartridge or interconnects (currently Audioquest Turquoise), that apart, it's a great system with a great sound.

These monitors are somewhat bright, but it doesn't come off as irritating.  Plus there are some EQ controls on the back, so it's not much of a problem anyway.  Great (and clear) bass on these too.  Not just "some stuff happening in the low-end", but you can really tell apart all the various bass frequencies in a song w/ these.  Excellent for $480.

Have a Klipsch Promedia 5.1 set, went kaboom one day, I recently ressurected it with an upgraded power supply and it sounds decent for movies/games. However, music cames out with a boxy-plastic midrange quality so this is a total no-no for anything else than boom-tz-tz music  (boom=bass drum kick, tz=synthesizer hihat sound)

Ha! Reread old threads and you find something you can answer.

I remember them, they made pretty good stuff ten years ago perhaps. I had a pair of their oversized bookshelf speakers and may still have them in storage (along with a pair of rotted surround, original Advent larger loudspeakers!).

The most notable thing I remember about those speakers outside the odd downward firing woofer on a platform, was the use of an anti-diffractive felt material around the tweeter. I recall it worked pretty well, but made off-axis high frequency response lousy.

They were an Audiosphere company not A-T I believe and audiosphere went bankrupt. That was too bad, because they also owned Dahlquist.

I have Celestion F1 speakers, connected to a Sony TA-FE 350R amp with Richer Sounds speaker cable. Marantz CD4000 CD player. All together, that's about £360

I like the sound but I don't find it too involving. Don't know if I should invest in stands for my Celestions? I suspect the problem is with the speaker placement...

Didn't connect the computer to the system yet. I did connect the iPod though, and it works great. The sound is almost CD-like since I started using AAC.

Digital source(s) (I'm still deciding what I want to do in this area, and I change my mind all the time) to Sony E9000es preamp/decoder updated with newest decoder firmware, Kinergetics KBA-75 Platinum Poweramp to Dynaudio Confidence 5 speakers.  All I can say about this setup is that the Dynaudio speakers are truely awesome.

I am currently looking for a good method to upsample my cd's to 24/96 pcm stream directly to my decoder w/o spending a fortune....

infinity kappa 9.2i series II
Picture (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=210256)

Neat -- my 'good' stereo features their lil' brothers (Kappa 8.2i II) powered by a Yamaha AX-1090

Wish I would've heard the JBL Ti 5000 + Rotel amp combination first, which graced my ears only a few weeks after buying the Kappas and the Yamaha - awesome combo, probably well worth the additional $$$ I would've had to shell out for it.

Oh well, I'm very content with what I have now anyway.

I've heard these speakers some time ago. Didn't like the sharp metallic sound of the tweeter and the bass didn't reach very deep. The kappas are more broadband. Maybe the jbl have a higher efficiency factor and sound somewhat more dynamically though.

Oh yes, that's exactly what I didn't like about those JBLs initially - actually that's what made me pick the Kappas instead. I heard both the Kappas and the JBLs on a Parasound HCA-1200, which emphasized the sharp dry sound of the JBLs.

However a couple weeks later I had the chance to compare both speakers again, this time on some Rotel amp (can't remember the model) and while the Kappas sounded almost sickeningly "sweet", the JBL Ti 5000 sounded just perfectly right. No idea why..

(gee this makes me almost sound like some of those self-proclaimed "audiophile" idiots. oh well, for the lack of better words..)

My fronts are super old, probably from the late 70's.  Brand name of MTX.  No idea about the tech specs on them, but they stand the test of time pretty well.  Good midrange, clear bass.  My dad, who handed them down, said they were pretty expensive at the time, ~$3-400 or so.

My rears are, again handed down, some Bose 201's.  Definately replacing these, but money is kind of an issue right now.

My sub a powered Sony SA-WM40.  Pretty good punch for the value.  Had to crack her open and mod it a little though.

All this crap is driven by a Yamaha HTR-5650.  I like it alot.

all very cheap (im a student), but works well enough and the 5.1 is very nice for dvds and games.

Nvidia's Nforce2, Sony STR-DE585 amplifier...

Speakers: Small & cheap self designed 2-way speakers, box volume 13L and bassreflex tuning at about 45 Hz (not built yet)
Woofer: 5½" bass/midbass Vifa TC14WG49-08 (link) (http://www.d-s-t.com/vifa/data/tc14wg49-08a.htm)
Tweeter: ¾" dome tweeter Vifa TC20TD05-06 (link) (http://www.d-s-t.com/vifa/data/tc20td05-06a.htm)
Crossover is also self-designed
These speakers (and crossovers) are currently in a designing phase

Subwoofer: 10" Focus Acoustics PT-100 element. My plan is to build the main-speakers first and then the subwoofer. I plan to put this element in a 60 L / 25 Hz bassreflex enclosure.
The subwoofer amplifier might also be self-built...

I have a high quality surround system that produces crystal clear sound:
4 x KEF Q15        100 W                50Hz-20kHz±3dB  max output 111 dB
1 x KEF Q95C      100 W                85Hz-20kHz±3dB  max output 111 dB
1 x KEF TDM B45  300W subwoofer 35Hz-150Hz±3dB  max output 111 dB

This system have replaced my home made STUDIO 200 that wayed in at 80 kg a piece. A three way system featuring 15" bass units.

They were perfect for stereo music, but hopeless when my wife wanted to rearrange the living room furniture.

That why I changed to a surround system. But oh boy, sometimes I still miss my good old STUDIO 200.

For the PC I have creative Inspire 2.1 slim 2700.
They do a decent job with good bass rendering and clear and well defined treble.
Oh boy when Earl Bostic plays his saxophone it is as if he is right in front of me.

I have previously tried two different Philips 2.1 systems and Creative Inspire 2.1 2400 but they were not worth their money.

Self constructed but not of my own design and not a kit: Siegfried Linkwitz's design for a small two-way open baffle dipole using Vifa drivers and a passive crossover. Pictures on my Website for the curious.

Planning to eventually replace those to his "PMTM1" design which is a lower-cost version of his Phoenix main panel. Will have active x-overs and be biamped with DIY amps using Rod Elliot's PCBs and plans. I might use one of the current speakers for the center channel. Or I might just build three of the PMTM1's. Thinking of building the amps into the speaker stands. It'll be a long project...

Not hooked up to my computer. That's too newfangled for this old fart! Geez, I hardly know what you kids are talking about here sometimes...

B&W DM.602's here. The price/performance ratio is simply unbeatable.

I don't believe in expensive speaker cables or interconnects. Every ABX test I've participated in has convinced me that "magic cables" are a waste of money. The appropriate gauge Radio Shack speaker cable does the job just fine.

I'm also using an Adcom power amp and an Adcom tuner/preamp (I never touch the tuner section; radio is a waste of time around here). These have both been going strong since I bought them in 1991.

This basic setup (Adcom components and the B&W speakers) cost a little over $1500 total, and sounds excellent. You really don't need to spend outrageous sums of money to get good sound.

Most of the time, I listen to classical music or jazz through a pair of Rega Cambers. They are Canadian-made and were really hot stuff in the late 80's-early 90's for people with hi-end tastes without the wallet to support them. Moreover, they are small, work well in a bookshelf and pack a huge wallop of a low end for their size - more than one guest thought for certain I had a subwoofer stuffed away somewhere. Very detailed midrange and highs, and remarkably efficient, too.

I power them with a mid-90's-vintage Adcom stack.

Upstairs, I still use my old Dynaco A-25's. They were similarly favored among budget high-end circles back in the 60's-early 70's. I got them new in 1969 and they still sound remarkably good, especially with voices and strings. Bottom end is solid without the "whump-thump" that so many seem to favor today. At first listen, one might thing they are thin in the bass... until a bass drum or 32 foot organ pedal comes up from the floor at you!

For these, I still run the Dynaco tube gear (FM-3 Tuner, PAS3X Pre-Amp, and two MarkIII monoblocks) I assembled from kits waaayyyy back when Nixon was in office. Over the years, I have upgraded it with various Van Alstine parts, including power supply mods, upgraded capacitors and the like. I now buy my tubes from Russia or China (both countries still have good vacuum tube manufacturing infrastructures) because they are high quality and CHEAP!

My study, containing floor-to-ceiling LP records and the retro stereo system with orange-glowing vacuum tubes, open-reel Tandberg tape deck and AR turntable, looks like a museum or the other side of a time warp, but my experience is that I would have to pay the price of a new mid-sized sedan to get significantly superior sound.

M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard.

M-Audio Studiophile BX5 bi-amped nearfield studio monitors ($400/pair MSP; $300 retail).

Cambridge Soundworks Powered Subwoofer PSWII (pre-Creative, early 1990s vintage,                                    $300 back then).

Out of the box the BX5s sound a bit 2-dimensional (typical of studio monitors) and shrill. However, there's a mid-boost switch, which when "In" moves  the soundstage forward. There are also switches for tweaking the high frequencies and adjusting for the best bass response in the listening enviroment. Once "tuned" these monitors reproduce sound that is crisp, clear, and uncolored. I listen mainly to classical, jazz, and folk music and am in the midst of converting a 500+ LP collection to hard disk. The BX5s are just what I need to isolate every click and pop on the vinyl originals. I don't even need to use headphones!

The low end is non-exagerated (as it should be in a studio monitor), but paired with a judiciously adjusted subwoofer, the bass takes on an understated richness. M-Audio sells a subwoofer designed to compliment the BX5s, but to my ears, my old trusty Soundworks sub does just as well or better.

Interesting. I don't follow the latest models on these things, but MA used to use KEF drivers years back, and they always sounded better than KEF's own cabinets IMO. I still have 70s MA4!

I use a pair of Rega Cambers with rotgut 12-gauge MonsterCable wires to my 100wpc Adcom stack. Very good sound for the price. Vinyl especially good. I use a Grado cartridge on an SME Series III titanium nitride arm mounted on a Kenwood KD-500 (Kenwood's attempt to build a high-end direct-drive turntable. The only D-D I have every used or liked. Turntable base is cast out of concrete!)

I also STILL have some old Dynaco A-25's! I replaced the tweeters with updated equivalents from SEAS, the Danish company that built them in the first place. I also upgraded the capacitors.

They sat in my attic for YEARS! To my surprise, the woofer surrounds were still supple (butyl rubber, not cloth). First impression is that they may be a little bass-shy, but the enclosure, a variation of transmission line, damps the lower frequencies very well, but when low bass is really there in the material, there is ample genuine bass - at least in my room.

Cello and string bass are astonishing, as is male voice - none of the flabbiness or tubbiness many speakers - including some expensive ones - pass off as bass.

I was so amazed at how good they still sounded after all these years, I spent a little money for the aforementioned upgrades and now they sound even better! More open and detailed high end is the main difference, but the basic character of the speaker is the same.

For my desktop computer I use Cambridge Soundworks. I plan on doing more with music on the computer, so I am looking seriously at M-Audio or Tascam compact near-field monitors to replace these basically gaming speakers.

My laptop (which has become my primary computer) has typically TERRIBLE speakers but the NVidia audio subsystem is actually quite decent. With it I use a lovely $180 pair of Sennheiser cans. The Sennheisers really are great for hearing just how good (or not so good) my encodes are.

for mp3/monkey's audio, i use the horrific analog out of my soundblaster 5.1 digital (saving up for a better soundcard and DAC, but it's not a huge priority at the moment), into my nad 1155 preamp, into my hafler SE240 (120wpc@8ohm, 200wpc@4ohm) amp, then either into my Stax SR-Xmk3 headphones, or my Magnepan MG-IIIa speakers.

Years ago, I used to build custom tube preamps and power amps - I would take the chassis from older Dynaco gear and hotrod away (I am a BSEE from MIT). Big cables and Celestion SL6s monitors.

After many ABX tests and real-life considerations, I dumped it all. Now I use a Bose Lifestyle 5 series II (about 10 years old now). Sounds great, FAR better performance under real living conditions. The bass module/cube satellite setup is far better suited to my home, especially with children (I have 2, still very rambunctious!). It has held up beautifully over time, and I would replace it with another similar system.

I just plug the iPod headphone out into the AUX inputs for now. Might get some docking solution later, but it doesn't matter much. The iPod sounds very good through the Bose system.

I am interested in a solution that ties the very large music library on my server to the stereo, but thus far aesthetics and other practical matters have held that notion at bay. Could be as simple as an Apple Express device, or something far more complex. I will wait a bit and see what develops.

For my other systems, I dumped the fancy cables and went with ordinary stuff. Again, ABX tests revealed to me how much I was allowing "buzz" to influence my listening. As an engineer, I find no value whatsoever in the cable arguments. Just my $0.02 on that subject.

Magnepan MMG. I have to say that after listening to planars (first Final 0.3 then Maggies), I will never go back to boom boxes. Planars flat out beat them.

Amen brother!  I have the MG 1.6's and fell in love with their clarity.  I liken them to the Etymotic ER4's I have as well.  Not bass heavy, totally neutral, but will ferret out bad recordings/encodings.

If you like planars, listen to a pair of RM-30's.

Danish made Dali Suite 2.8 Silver (www.dali.dk (http://www.dali.dk)) 1000€/pair. They sound veeeeeery nice, although I don't see myself as a real audiophile. Should have choosen Dali Concept 10 instead though (same price) if I wanted to play loud with the same great sound quality.

Got a Harman/Kardon AVR130 surround receiver, but should have got a larger one...

Baby baby baby baby...you can't beat late '70's amps. As posted previously, I'm the proud owner of a 1978 Marantz 2285b black-faced edition. It's powering a pair of Fisher XP9b's. These are unique speakers in that they are 4-way: a 12", two different types of 4", and a silk-dome tweeter. They're stiff on most types of music, but occasionally surprise the hell out of me with shine and image on jazz and classical music.

Quote
Perhaps I don't have the best ears, but I've never been able to distinguish a good $400-$500 set of speakers from a good $1500 set of speakers. In fact I'd guess the imperfect acoustics of my family room contribute more to degradation of the sound than the speakers do, so unless I'm going to move to a house specially designed for optimal acoustic properties...

The difference is...the difference is that you have to sit and listen for it. At some point, yes, they'll sound similar, but the more expensive speakers with reveal a third dimension to the sound. In addition to left and right, you'll hear up and down, and even forward and backward.

Since my last post I had a change of mind. Instead of the Linkwitz PMTM-1 I went all the way and built his Orion design. Superb. The small Linkwitz PMT1 dipoles are now surrounds. It's now a 4.0 system -- Quad lives again! Rest of system:

Two 4 X 60 watt Elliot Sound DIY amps (p3a) with the Linkwitz Orion ASP crossover boards built/hardwired in their chassis (and shielded against EMI from the tranny!).

Harman Kardon DPR 1001 receiver (using preouts for the Orions obviously)

Old Thorens TD-160 turntable (shout out to the '70s!) with AudioTechnica AT-130 cartridge for my old vinyl.

Rotel RQ-970BX phono preamp

Pioneer DV-563A CD/DVD-A/SACD player

Next upgrade: Dedicated room.

You will be REALLY sick when you find out how much I payed for them.  I got the LST's a denon avr-810 and a denon dcd-520  for $100.00 total.  Sold the denon equipment and actually ended up making money on the deal.  The audio god's were smiling on me that day for sure.

The vote at the top of this page is seriously broken in both FireFox and IE.  A mod should look into this.

Other wise my main boxes are B&W CDM1 that I got several years ago.  Very great sounding speakers and they reviewed very well.

Speaking of bargins, I got a Pioneer receiver and a pair of AR3a speakers for $12 at Goodwill.  The recever died several months later but I still have the speakers in my bedroom system.  I reconed them back in 1995 and they still sound pretty good hooked up to my Yamaha RX-V450 and computer's digital toslink.

I hope I'll use Jamo D590 in a couple of days, ordered them some days ago. There's pretty much of a hype around d570/d590, because they're sold really cheap (200/300 EUR a pair)

My chain before the speakers is: IBM thinkpad T22/Foobar2000.0.92 with pphs resampler @ 48khz -> sb audigy 2 zs notebook -> Pioneer A-656 mk2 -> Speakers.

Yeah, I ordered the Jamo D590, too. I got mine already yesterday (338€ for the pair, incl. shipping)
I had a cheap Aiwa compact stereo before and I wanted to buy something decent for long. I stumbled about the hype thread at hifi-forum.de and figured that this was a no-brainer.
But I couldn't try them yet, because I'm still waiting for my amp to arrive.

yeah, my "good" stereo system: $15 (used) speakers, original woofers (that were in a state of fragmentation) were replaced. DIY subwoofer (70W). 2x60W Technics amp. Both the speakers and subwoofer are conntected to the same stereo amp in some hybrid way. the "Bass" control is set to max for a boomy bass  . Integrated NB soundcard (AC97?). A bit "ghetto" setup but it sounds good enough for me and can play really loud  .

I have an entry level Infinity set up for my speakers.
Primus 160's for mains, 150's for rears, c25 (or whatever the center is called), and the PS-10... I think... it's the 10 inch 250 watt Infinity sub.  I sometimes have a couple extra RCA speakers from an old HTIB (4 1/2" woofers) for surround backs.

I have some Monsoon MH-505's for my computer.  Great speakers, but Monsoon went out of business.  Too bad.

I have two pairs of LST's which I currently have stacked, but my livingroom is a little too small for that much sound.  As a result I'm using the bottom pair as mere stands for the top pair, which gets the signal from a accuphase amp.  So, I might be looking to sell one pair.  They're in very good condition, so I think I might get $2000 for them on ebay on a good day.  Were you looking to buy?

I wouldn't call my stereo good. My amp is my HT amp, Denon AVR-2805 and the speakers are KEF Coda 9s from about 10 years back, they sound good and have a controlled bass which is nice. I really do need a good system at some point though...either that or I start using headphones so as not to annoy the neighbours

This post is broken btw, get a load of errors at the top of the screen and there are no poll options, also the fast reply is gone.

I just got the Klipsch promedia 2.1 PC speakers. This is the amp/sub/satellite combo. I think considering the price ($150.00) they're excellent. Good grief, it's more than loud enough for the little apartment I'm living in. I've got to keep the sub turned way down or the neighbors get pissed. It's been years since I sold old Kenwood drivers and I've been using headphones the entire time. Nice to get some decent speakers again.

It doesn't matter what you think or believe only what you can prove (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=3974&view=findpost&p=149481).
You would be the first, to my knowledge, to "easily" tell the difference between LAME@250kbps and the original on regular music even with multimillion dollar gear.

My "system" is an evolution of what I decide to keep or trade off

Most all of it is second hand.

I use my soundstorm optical out (640 KBPS AC3) to an RCA RT2390 reciever.  My center is a KLH 2410.  Left and right are some 15" Kenwood 3-piece floor speakers, no model numbers but they are boomy.  My rear channels are 8" Radio Shack Pro Series rebadged Pioneers. My sub is a 10" lightning audio, ported.

I think it provides a sort of epic imaging, like going to a theater...but I mainly play games and watch movies.

This reply is a bit late.. but the key may be in the settings.  If the response is limited to 16 khz (typical) and you can hear to 20 khz, then you can abx the difference no matter how perfectly the under 16 khz part is coded.

for working:

PC with cheapo onboard CMedia audio
M-Audio DX4 powered desktop speakers

what's playing:
FLAC thanks to EAC/REACT, parallel-ripped to AAC for portable

My philosophy is I spend on speakers: the ES11's I've had for ages and they're so sweet in my listening space.

Browsing the slimdevices forum, and seeing some of the "hi-fi" builds that people are pairing with their SqueezeBoxes, I find it insanely amusing how some people bark on about using the "right" codec and whether TOSLINK is good or bad, and focussing far too much on the digital end (easy: store it and send it lossless) when their analog end of the chain is total rubbish; putting [sometimes very good] speakers on breezeblocks or on the floor, or beside doorways, and in highly reactive rooms, and thinking that Monster Cable will somehow make it sound better.

I think it's worth thinking about the space we actually listen to our music in when talking about "good" or "bad" setups.  To reiterate my point above: the digital bit is by far the easiest bit.

</rant>

It's taken me about 4 years of waiting/reading/thinking before [finally!] going digital, not that I have a magic system by any means, but I started from being very pleased with the performance of my analog gear, and adding a digital head end makes my face hurt from all the grinning I'm doing!

The SqueezeBox is a fantastic gadget, and although its DA isn't the absolute best, it's ok for now and my sound can only improve when I choose to upgrade to an outboard DA.

I've still got a long way to go to get to the end of my 800 or something CD collection, but hey, that's just another part of the collector mindset I think.

Cheers
Roland

Epos ES11 on Epos frames

[...]

My philosophy is I spend on speakers: the ES11's I've had for ages and they're so sweet in my listening space.

I used ES11's for years -- they reproduce music so ... musically (yeah!), that I happily accepted their shortcomings for long. Hi-fi maniacs tend to climb the sonic skyscraper one floor at the time, generating quite some cashflow really, but I found myself staying with my ES11's until I took the elevator up to a pair of Meridian DSP-5500's.

Which are fully-digital active speakers: they take a SPDIF signal in, and do the rest. Crossovers are part of the DSP.

I'm here because I'm just starting to experiment with putting together an audio server that will outperform my CD player with lossless encoding.  I had a chance to play with a new device by Linn called the Klimax DS (for Digital Server).  It quite literally trounces their own $20,000 CD12, the top Meridian, and every other high end CD player I've heard.  I think I'll try to do it for less than the $18,500 for the DS, though!

Speakers:  B&W 802D, Transparent Audio Reference cable throughout.
Amplification: Musical Fidelity TriVista 300
CD:  Musical Fidelity DM-25 DAC (Tube output connection), MuFi DM-25 Transport (Separate L&R balanced digital outs to DAC).

After 32 Years in High End Audio (and, more recently, Home Theater), the most musical and engaging system I've ever owned.

Pleased to see so much B&W, Paradigm and Magneplanar here!

Nothing fancy here:

Cambridge Audio A5 Amp (http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/summary.php?PID=32&Title=A5%20Integrated%20Amplifier)

Eltax Monitor 3 Speakers (http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=ELTA-MONITOR3BCH) (biwired)

But I love it! I tested a lot of other considerably more expensive setups before I bought this (5 years ago now) but whilst some sounded markedly different, none sounded better to my ears.

I'm moving house in the next few months, so will probably be looking to upgrade to something a little more refined.

I got my dream set up together just a week ago, the speakers being the last element to arrive.

MP3 Lame VBR-New Standard
External Hard Disk on FireWire
Laptop
USB soundcard M-Audio Fast Track Pro
Cheap RCA cable
Hybrid Tube/Solid State Stereo integrated amplifier Musical Fidelity X-T100
Biwiring speaker cables Audioquest type 2.1
Stereo speakers Jean-Marie Reynaud Cantabile Signature

I'm quite pleased with the result: nice, natural, organic and pleasant sound. Instruments sound very close to the 'real thing' as though they were in the room. The speakers are famous for that. The amp on the other hand adds a bit of tubey warmth to the overall sound. I'm losing a bit of bass punch and detail compared to a more analytical amp like the Rotel1062 but, in my opinion, the sound is overall more pleasant and emotionally involving.

Hi, i just wanted to know what kind of speakers you all have at home ... and you have your PC and soundcard connected to them somehow ?

As the poll will only give me 10 options and i normally needed about 20 to make a sensible categorization i'd like you to post a short reply with some comments also, especially if you have self made speakers and probably designed and constructed them by yourself, like what is your background here and what software and measurement equipment were you using, what tweeters/mid/woofers etc. .... thanks

Beware when you use the device drivers that come with the thing - I've found out that on my Toshiba notebook, the OEM driver installed an equalizer that changed the sound of the output considerably - probably it is adapted for the internal speakers.

First post to the forum.  Looks like a great place.

My "good" system isn't in place right now due to space issues in the family room:

Magneplanar Tympani 1C
homemade 3-way crossover
homemade preamp derived from Walt Jung's TAA designs
Dynaco Stereo 400
Dynaco Stereo 150
M&K 200 subwoofer (needs re-coning)
Marantz 120B tuner
Luxman CD player

So I listen mostly on the go with my iPod and Sony EX-71s.  I do have a couple of secondary systems, but they tend to change depending on whether I'm testing repaired gear, ripping/remastering some of my old vinyl or checking CD/DVD masters before sending them to friends.  I have a lot of weird used stuff from the 60s/70s that I keep for esthetic reasons, but it all works and gives me a lot of combinatorial possibilities.

Paradigm Mini Monitor v.5's (amped with home-built "gainclone" amp, based off LM3875 op-amps...approx. 60W/ch. RMS)
connected to amp with 12AWG OFC wire (nothing special, it's just the largest gauge I had readily available (was left over after wiring up my sub in my car), and it's still OFC, so it's decent quality at least)

Hsu STF-2 10" sub (connected to LFE-out on sound card)

M-Audio Revolution 5.1 sound card (analog out)

media players:
Foobar w/ ASIO output (Windows XP Pro)
Amarok (Ubuntu 7.10, with dmix reconfigured to avoid resampling to 48kHz)

That Audax center-channel design looks similar in layout to Paradigm's new center channel models (among others, I'm sure).  How do the speakers sound?  Also, what are you amping them with?  I have to say, $260 is a steal for what appears to be a decent center channel!

I've seen some reviews on that site before, but I didn't know they had that much DIY stuff on there; I think I've found a new favorite audio site!

I built this system 2 years ago.. WAY back in my college years.  The amp wasn't anything REALLY special, just a Pioneer VSX-1014TX-K (~$400, I think).  Thinking was that the speakers were going to be around much longer than the receiver anyway, especially one that is meant for decoding emerging digital codecs.  I think I paid around $900 for the parts for the 7 speakers and $650 for the sub.  You can't forget labor though.  I did this up at my grandfathers house and he really got excited about the project after it started coming together! There is an obnoxiously long thread on avsforum that is a very good read for those wanting to do this project.  http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=170942 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=170942)

The sound is outstanding according to my ears.  I'll admit, I don't have much of a reference except for those people who are all proud of their home theatre in a box setups.  There is simply NO comparison between the them.  Big, clean, clear and unlabored sound with a real sub to provide encompassing bass and a projector for your video just can't be matched!

EVEN MY WIFE LOVES THEM AND DOESN'T MIND A LIVING ROOM DECORATED WITH SPEAKERS! That's about as good of a review as you can get!

Just finished building myself a new system:

Source: AV-710 rear channel DAC
Amp: Stereo LM3886 based chipamp for stereo channels, 300W subwoofer amp of my own design, fourth order Linkwitz-Riley active crossover at 95Hz
Speakers: Fostex FE167E full range drivers in 15L bass reflex cabinets
Subwoofer: 12" car subwoofer in 70L sealed box, with Linkwitz Transform to correct response, and -3dB point at 25Hz

The system sounds absolutely excellent. I still need to complete measurements of the chipamps to decide if they are going to stay, but they sound great for the moment. Both the speakers and the electronics were my own design, and I'm pretty pleased with the whole thing.

VMPS speakers. I have a dedicated and acoustically treated listening room, and I'm fussy. I'm very, very happy with it.

Audio sources are anything from a Squeezebox (most listening), which is all EAC rips of CDs I've bought,  to SACD and DVD-A. Sometimes I use my laptop as an audio source, but rarely for real listening.

I've got a Quadraflex Reference 240R receiver (from the 80s or early 90s most likely) along with some Optimus (a Radioshack brand I think) 3-way speakers, form the 90s I think. I have the receiver hooked up to the line out of my computer's sound card. Not exactly legendary equipment, but it sounds *excellent* to my ears. The only thing missing are super-low frequencies (below about 30 hertz) but I honestly don't notice it except on a few hip hop tracks. I guess I could buy a subwoofer at some point in time.

Magnepan 2.5/R mains, Martin Logan Dynamo Sub, Magnepan MGII-b as center (behind projector screen), B&W 301s as surround, SPDIF into Marantz NR1501.  Works quite well

PC > Phonic Helixboard 24 Universal (HD audio) > Yamaha A-760 > Canton GLE-70 for studio purposes (I also own Behringer TRUTH B2031P, but i don't like bass reflex speakers)

PC (HD audio) > Yamaha A-760 > Infinity RSIII for homecinema purposes

I hope to build an Hypex-based amplifier some time in the future...

3 Revel Salon2s (front) and 6 Revel Gem2s (surrounds). They are hidden behind an acoustically transparent screen and in columns around the room.

I have a Windows 7 64bit connected to a Denon AVP using the HDMI cable from my Crossfire'd pair of HIS Radeon 5970s. I let the Denon do all of the processing of the audio and just pass the signals to it directly via the HDMI.

Western Digital HD TV
LG DVD player
Denon 1909 AVR
Harbeth C7ES3

WD HDTV and the very cheap DVD player are both connected to the Denon AVR via HDMI. The Denon AV processor and amplifier is the heart of the system. It is true value for money for what it does.

What makes the most difference is the Harbeth speaker. The mid-range clarity is phenomena. My re0 headphone is meant to be a very revealing headphone, but it is no comparison to Harbeth. No even close.

Harbeth is of thin walled cabinet design. The cabinet 'breathes' quite a lot of low bass. It sounded like there is a real cello or piano in the living room - rich and full of texture. It is simply a very enjoyable speaker.

In my dedicated, custom built listening room, I have a high-end system based around a full set of MartinLogan Electrostats.

This highly customized setup features an Infinite Baffle sub and a totally custom electrostat / line array center channel I designed and built to keep up with my Monoliths.

Custom active crossovers based on DBX 4800 speaker processors are used to drive 15 channels of amplification, all of which is fronted by the awesome Denon AVP preamp. With a full Audyssey Pro room correction applied on top of a full-on acoustic treatment, the room performance is the best I've ever heard.

Feeding high-quality multichannel audio from a DenonLink attached disc player as well as over 8ch HDMI feed from Foobar2000 running on my HTPC, I have all the quality and convenience I could want.

At least I have one more remote than JonFo has

5 years ago  I chose  Canton ergo 702dc or more like they chose me. I have been grateful ever since.
I got a good price as they were the last of the light colour line, to be replaced by the above cherry, and they were demos.
They are perfect for my taste, for use with TV, movies and music. Also as a bonus, they are solid, natural, beautifully crafted and are aesthetically pleasing.

I did add on a Canton Ergo  centre cm502  and 2 years ago a 12" Energy bass woofer.

Asus sound card -> YBA amp -> Totem speakers + REL sub

I went the hifi way as opposed to a balanced/shielded studio setup. I don't have enough equipment and cables to worry about interference. Might upgrade to an external DAC in the future, but all cabling is analog for now.

My setup is NAS -> sonos zp80 -> Musical fidelity x-150 -> Orpheus aurora 3's speakers
(http://cache.websetters.com.au/images/1145-250x800orpheus-aurora3.jpg)

My advice for anyone looking at speakers - take 2 or 3 of your favourite cd's into your local hifi store, and listen to all the speakers they have in their auditioning room. I found quite a lot of difference, particularly in the bass, between the speakers under $2500. I chose mine based on sounding the most neutral compared to the most expensive headphones they had in store.

Above $2500, all the speakers I listened to were both very loud and very expensive.

Optical out (Foobar) -> Behringer DEQ2496 (Uses AK4393 DAC )-> QSC CX404 -> Paradigm Reference Signature 8
My Response was very flat, the system is so revealing to the point where I've started to realize how poor many recordings are.
The time you have a fantastic recording it rewards you in spades.
I love it!

Kef 104/2 with new tweeters, driven through a media server with m audio 1010lt soundcard into  hypex AS 2.100 poweramps via spdif, using 48000hz sampling.
I had used a behringer deq before, but found that the difference in sound between auto eq'ed signal and the non eq'ed signal was so insignificant
that there was really no justification in keeping the deq in the chain.

I play music using Desktop Computer and foobar2000 and Windows XP with Direct Sound driver.

I sit in various Yoga positions on the floor in the corner of a small carpeted room without conventional tables or chairs; props are hacked together on demand from hardware scraps.

At the far end of the room: 2x Fostex SM6600 rearfield studio monitors, with a dedicated Yamaha MX-55 power amp which has gain control for each channel.

Just in font of me at arms length and head height: 2x TDL Electronics nearfield monitors, with a dedicated Yamaha MX-55 power amp which has gain control for each channel.

Line Out from Computer splitting the signal to both amps, and adjust the gain controls on the amps so all 4 speakers present a balanced sound stage.

All cables are professional quality and the RCA connectors are made by Neutrik AG.

No Preamp or Filters or EQ or other hardware used in the signal path ...ocassionally, I will use the built-in EQ of foobar2000.

In summary, it's a 2+2 stereo hi-fi listening system designed by and for a hedonistic cave dweller.

Well... mine are newer: Infinity RS 2001 bought in may 1990 together with a Rotel RA-820AX with all my student's savings and listened practically each and every day since (woofer refoamed in summer 2001).

Definitely my longer lasting love affair!

I have had a bit of a dilema in my search for the sound I know I can get.  My main system is an Integra receiver feeding Paradigm speakers - Monitor 9 floor-standers, with closely matched sub and surrounds.  Sound comes from the PC, as FLAC files through a music server to the receiver.  Sounds very good, especially with content like piano and female voice, and movies are spectacular.  But for music, I still prefer my basement setup--Bottlehead kit vacuum tube preamp feeding a Marantz solid state power amp into some 70's-era Advent 2-way speakers with some driver modifications.  Sound is incredibly smooth, yet punchy.  I can listen for hours.  Frustrating because I can't get the Paradigm system to sound that "pleasing".  I suspect it may be the speakers, because I have moved the Paradigm's to the tube system, and it still lacked something.  I think there is definitely something to the vacuum tube / paper cone sound that is very pleasing.

Have you heard the new Q or R series?

I haven't, sorry.

I am in a smaller room now than I was when I bought the iQ7s, and have considered downsizing my speakers, but they are still very satisfying, with a 'big' sound to them. The bass goes pretty low, although there are some recordings when the bottom notes begin to disappear.

I'd still recommend them as a good value second-hand purchase. The iQ7s flew under the media radar a bit, while everyone raved over the smaller iQ3s and iQ5s, and the top-of-the-range iQ9s.

If you do buy iQ speakers, remember that if you pop out the blanking markers in order to use banana plugs, it's hard to tell which is + and which is - even in good light, so using a marker pen on the back gives a good visual guide.
