I think its not a good idea tweaking the Lame settings for my test. It goes against the HA mantra of "NEVAH tweak the presets", so it would not be representative of what forum readers use.

Well, it's not that much tweaking, after all in 3.95 --preset 128 is just --abr 128. But I agree that it is not very representative of real use.

Gabriel, could you please tell me the tweaked preset for a bitrate around 128 kbps ?

It would be nice if some users will perform individual tests with --abr 128 and --abr 128 -q0, before the end of the test. Then Roberto may post something like an appendix, or a comment as conclusion about the (possible) benefits of the -q0 switch. What do you think?

I think that at 128kbps the benefits of q0 regarding quality are clear. But it does not represent how users will be using Lame.

I'd like to ask if anyone here is experiencing problems to reach the listening tests site -

It's been weeks since I could last log into it. If it's only a DNS problem in my ISP there are no worries, it should get fixed sooner or later. But if more people are having issues, I'll need to move it again.

Verloren, can you help? I can't login through my FTP account either.

Also, I couldn't login using HA's SSH server + lynx.

Yes, of course it is. Just add -q ??? after --preset standard.
But the test should be based on standard setting.

does this actually mean that the standard setting is an abr (JS) mode instead of cbr (Stereo) like it used to be?
--alt-presets are there for a reason! These other switches DO NOT work better than it, trust me on this.
LAME + Joint Stereo doesn't destroy 'Stereo'

The default encoding mode in Lame is still cbr/128/JS.

Btw if you want to know what is the default mode, you can try it.

You can also download a free plug-in supporting all bitrates encoding for RealPlayer. I would really like to see (confirm ) how bad it performs against Lame & other encoders using short blocks. I would be rather suprised not to see Xing at the last position, but this test could show the truth.
