Title: A new way to create and distibute music (part 3)
Post by: marcan on 2004-09-21 00:26:21
Hi everyone,

Following the explanation of the concept in this discussion:
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....topic=22101&hl= (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=22101&hl=)

And the huge success with Prodigy written here:
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....t=0#entry223096 (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=1&t=22969&st=0#entry223096)
(You can still check the Prodigy's interface here:
http://www.audiogame.net/prodigy/soldout.html (http://www.audiogame.net/prodigy/soldout.html))

The adventure is going on.

The next release is Airlock – Shape of light.
Formats are mp3 (aps), pcm and DTS. Not too much compression: RG=-3.9 dB

The launch will be 21st of September at 14:15 GMT+1
The place: http://www.airlock.be/shape/ (http://www.airlock.be/shape/)

HA buddies are able to check the beta of the interface here:
http://www.audiogame.net/airlock/airlock48.html (http://www.audiogame.net/airlock/airlock48.html)
Enjoy!

I’ll be happy to give you more details later (still need to work on it ;-).
Anyway, comments are welcomed.

Thank you for your support.

Cheers,

Marcan

It's living now.
http://www.airlock.be/shape/ (http://www.airlock.be/shape/)
Each version is unique.
No DRM, just pure mp3, pcm and DTS.
Enjoy

hmm... unfortunately i don't have any money to buy this stuff, but i was just having a look at the site.

the flash window looks to be about 25% the size it should be.  i'm using mozilla 1.6 Gecko/20040113

i'll play around a bit.

[edit]

by the way, i'm really warming to this idea - a song becoming like a print series, where there's a limited number available, and each is unique.  things like this make music "collectable" again, i think.

too bad Andy Warhol is dead, because he'd probably love this kind of thing (if he could stop laughing at reality TV for long enough).

[edit 2]

works fine in IE.  pity.

MugFunky, do you have maximized your browser?

You can play with it, it's free .
It's possible to turn the auto solo off.
An interesting function is the random. After around five minute the loop is randomly changed. You have a kind of infinite loop.

I like the interface and that there's no DRM, but I still think I'm better off being a listener than a creator/composer. I would be soo tired of the track before I could ever make up my mind about the best "mix".

No offence, but playing with it reminds me of eJay (http://www.ejay.com/splash/default.asp)

MugFunky, we have fixed the problem in mozilla. Could you confirm it works fine for you now?

edit:

if i purchase the song in .wav format, will converting the track to AAC significantly affect the music?

Well it's a PCM.
You can do what you want with it.
Technically, it depends on the encoder and quality of the compression, but I think you will find more infos about this subject in the appropriate section of HA.

well i know the format and encoder i choose will affect the quality, but what i mean is, since the .wav is a unique variation encoded straight from the original 24bit song, would converting it affect the quality more than a .wav file i ripped from a cd? i guess it wouldn't really affect it any differently, a wav is a wav i suppose.

no, it would be the same as if ripped from the CD (even better, if the rippe was somehow flawed)

marcan, do you mind if i/we share even just a 30 second clip with friends? or are your lips sealed / hands tied behind your back on the subject?

that song is freakin' sweet, at least from what i can tell from the flash site.

/me awaits his two tracks to arrive

Hey Plonk,
As long as you pay, you can do everything you want with it  , it's your version.
If you can just put the [a href="http://www.airlock.be/shape/]site (in the filename or something) where you can get it, it might be cool.

[a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=244467"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

As you said, a wav is a wav, it's more a question of source.
Actually, the mp3 was encoded with 24 bits source. In a duscussion [a href="http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=21190&hl=]here, we thought it was a good idea to encode from 24, knowing that lame converts everything in 32 bits before the encoding. The difference still to be proved (Proposal on listening tests (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=25835&st=25&p=234393&#entry234393))
Anyway I thought it was a good idea to keep 24 without dithering, because the dithering noise can “fool” the encoder and therefore waste space/quality while the encoder can handle 24.
Talking about the CD and the PCM version, the source of the CD album (Airlock – “Symptomatic”) before the mastering was 16/48 undithered. For the PCM online version, the source is 24/48. The mastering is less compressed/limited and dithered to 16/44. So, the version is different but the sound also…

I think it could be all these anti spasm systems filtering the e-mails from our server.
We should find a solution this week.

Anyway, very good choice Plonk, especially the DTS 5.1. It rocks.

1-1-3-5-5-2 sounds nice to my ears.

this is a very cool idea. not for everyone, though.

i just bought a song. i have three minor complaints. the first one is, the combonation i wanted was sold out - i'm assuming the service is only selling a certain number of each combonation right now because the service just launched and it's still sort of in the testing phase. i'm also assuming that when the service takes off, there won't be a limited number of each combonation because that would be really irritating for the customers. however, the combonation i ended up getting wasn't that different and i'm satisfied with it. the second complaint is the deal with the sleeve - i don't have a printer, it'd be nice if i could save the sleeve on my harddrive. the third complaint is the price. ok, i'm willing to spend $3.78 for one mp3 just to test out this new service, but i'm not going to pay the much per song when i'm looking to buy a number of albums' worth of songs.

other than that, i really like the service so far. i'm looking forward to future songs and i hope the service catches on.

It's not a technical limitation, it's more conceptual.
In our concept, all versions are unique; hence when you buy your version, nobody else will be able buy it anymore. So Randal, you got your version and nobody can have it unless you share it.
For Prodigy, we have created subtle variations in order to propose the same version while ensure uniqueness.

You can use the link sent thru e-mail whenever you want.
If you want to save it on your hd anyway, you can find the sleeve in your Temporary Internet Files. The name of the file is something like: return.swf?idversion=2&ran=1074039443&reservation=9abb….

Well, you are not paying for a mass product but more for a unique piece of music. Regarding the number of versions released (3,600); we couldn’t do it with a lower price. Also, I think it is interesting to support music or artist with a smaller audience and therefore at a higher price.

that's a good idea. i'd just like to humbly suggest doing that for every song, so more than 1 person can buy the same combonation.

let me get this straight, if the service takes off, will you be selling whole albums like this, or just a few songs selected by the artist?

It looks great, and I think the idea is wonderful (at least for things like singles). One thing I did notice though is that clicking on Buy doesn't work very well for me (both now and quite a while back). A strange kind of 's' starts spinning and it says the server is busy after a while.
For me this isn't a big problem, as I'm not a big fan of the music (I was mainly interested in what kind of payment options you offer), but obviously this can be a problem if you're interested in actualling selling music.

Clearly this is less related to albums.
Personally I prefer few good tracks than an album with a couple of good tracks tied with tasteless tunes.
Anyway, longer format and a choice of different trakcs could be a good idea.

Sure, we are in contact with several bands. Known: Massive Attack, Placebo, ... and less known.
The next release will be Soldout. An indie electro-punk band. Amongst others, we have several takes of the voice at different places (live, bedroom, ...), very interesting...
We are developing interactions between (known and less known) artists and therefore creating several interesting possibilities while increasing the audience of each one.

Strange, I'm pretty sure I already replied earlier, but I might have simply forgotten to actually click add reply or something silly like that.

In any case, I don't have a Mac, but installing a newer version of Flash did indeed solve the problem.

after watching some Jason Scott Def Con videos (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=jason+scott), old topics have been on my mind as of late.

after stumbling across a mention of Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned with a friend on IRC, i'm so happy The Internet Archive successfully backed up marcan's projects i recalled:
