A more comfortable way probably is to use a specialised program for that purpose: TheLastRipper.
I did not use it, but it seems very promising with features such as automatic cover art downloading and splitting the recorded stream into tracks that then are organised according to artist and album.

AFAIK if you record the plain audio with Mp3DirectCut, you only get one big file without any information on what music it contains. Using a program that directly records the stream, all tracks are saved to separate files which are tagged reasonably.
If you want to just record the now playing song, direct recording is probably faster and easier to use. However, if more tracks are to be recorded, the "ripper" solution seems much more comfortable to me.

I listen to last.fm, but never wanted to record the stream. That's why I never used any tool to record that stream.

If you use Firefox, it's easy to download the stream with the help of Video Downloadhelper

I'm coming into this thread late and trying to capture a radio stream using this method.

Tell me, how does executing the MP3DirectCut Recorder capture the audio from the radio feed? Though I once had a soundcard whose mixer interface had a record source labelled as 'what I hear', which I never used, and guess that was somehow intended to allow capture of anything that the PC is playing. But my present soundcard mixer doesn't show any such record source on it's mixer interface. So how is the radio stream captured by MP3DirectCut, or any other editor/recorder, Audacity. for instance?

see in mp3DC > configuration, does it shows input devices
if not, then assuming you run Windows 7, open record devices and right click in dialog, then select show disabled devices
if you still can't see your card output as recording device, then maybe your card's driver doesn't allow that

as for last.fm, you have here posts with other working options, that doesn't involve direct recording
