Title: foo_podcatcher
Post by: nausea on 2009-01-31 16:25:34
This is a component for subscribing to, downloading, and playing podcasts in foobar2000.

Get versions 0.1.2 (beta) and 0.2.1 (beta) here: download foo_podcatcher (http://www.unkempt.co.uk/fb2k/foo_podcatcher.html)

To manage your podcast subscriptions open the Podcatcher UI from the View->Podcatch Manager menu. Here you can add new feed URLs and create playlists. The component will parse RSS 2.0 and Atom 1.0 feeds.

In the preferences you can set the download path and the time period over which to download from each feed automatically. The component will check for new podcasts 15 seconds after foobar2000 starts and then again every 60 minutes.

Known issue for 0.1.6+: Group headings don't respect UI colours and fonts reliably.

Recent changes:
Anyway, let me know if you find any problems, and post any feeds which don't seem to work.

Note for 0.2.x - this version has major changes to the way that feed and cast statuses are stored, so it is possible and likely that stability has regressed. As always, help me help you by submitting those crash reports!

Great plugin!

A bug report: The podcatcher UI seems to have problems with umlauts (ä,ö,ü) and probably other special characters in podcast titles. Names are truncated just before their occurence. Example feed (http://www.law-podcasting.de/podcast.php)

Some feedback:
-The time you create the  podcast playlist, the first song you ll play will have its seek bar disabled.
-If you remove a subscription you cant readd it.
-If oyu delete a track, you cant redownload it. On updates, podcatcher should check if downloaded files do exist.

And a little feature request although I undrstand this is just an alpha, an option to write published date in a file tag would be great!

u roxx mate!

the greatest plugin ever

a little feedback, to what i've just runed:
1) it started to auto download the episodes only after i've added a new feed
2) the url type feed:// isn't supported. i've changed it to http:// and it did work. (the feed is rss2, so it should be)

except these i have not found any bugs.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I've released a quick update with a few fixes. More will follow!

and I download the mp3 files, but it download the file only 50k,but  the file is 12M.

Is this with all feeds? If not could you post an example feed which has the problem. Thanks.

1) I guess this was after the first run, when you had to set the download directory. The items are still in the queue so you can trigger the download by updating the podcasts. I'll make this more elegant at some point...
2) Do you have an example podcast which uses feed:// "protocol"?

This was because of the encoding of the feed. It seems to work for the example feed now. Let me know if you come across any others with similar problems. It's easy to not notice character encoding problems when everything you listen to is in English...

Sure, here are some: http://tilos.hu/podcast/ (http://tilos.hu/podcast/)
All of those are rss2, only the url type is different. Actually it works, if you change the url to http://

Great plugin! I just did what the author recommended, put the Podcast Path to the "Podcast" folder (I created) in my library (D:/Music/Podcast) and created an autoplaylist "Podcast" (* HAS podcast) and everything turned out fine    I noticed the downloaded music files (I only subscribed to audio-podcasts) all have embedded art so I will try to display those in the Curacao elpplaylist ^^  Thanks for the great work!

Version 0.0.3 released. Main change is to the downloading UI. Now uses notification area to inform about new podcasts, downloads, etc. You can see the download progress of individual items in the Podcast Manager UI.

aliumalik: automatically updating playlists is on the TODO list for the next version.

predator29: I'll also look at the feed:// issue. As you say they work if you change the url to http:// so it should be easy...

Great. Would it even be possible to add ability to add an episode to the playlist after double clicking it in the list and even better navigating to the corresponding list item using keyboard and pressing enter key? Potcast manager window seems to be great it lists all the episodes. For me it would be nice to review that list and add to the playlist episodes I like. Or if playlist will be generated and streaming will be possible then I can let the plugin to generate the playlist and then remove the episodes I don't want to listen to.

thanks I love this plugin.

"remove selected" button removes only one item although selects many in podcatcher

few suggestions:
one more display column: <description> element
maybe sort columns if title column is clicked
access to information in columns, at least ability to copy

one note: i had to rename .m4b extension to .m4a to be able to play the file (but that has nothing to do with this component, although it stores the info about it as .m4b so when creating playlist it of course looks for .m4b)

thanks

It updates it to "deleted", and you should be able to re-download it manually.

Something is seriously wrong here...

I set the download folder under Library->Preferences->Tools-Podcatcher, then ran View->Podcast Manager to load a podcast. I entered the podcast URL and clicked Subscribe... and nothing happens. The bottom panes don't get populated, nothing.

I tried with the following three URLs, same result. Restarting... nothing. Clicking every button on the page... nothing.

http://www.onthemedia.org/index.xml (http://www.onthemedia.org/index.xml)
http://pointofinquiry.libsyn.com/rss (http://pointofinquiry.libsyn.com/rss)
http://carollaradio.com/feed/ (http://carollaradio.com/feed/)

What am I doing wrong?

Alle three feeds works for me.

I don't know if I'm doing anything wrong, but I can't remove more than one file* at a time. *all those files in the right column in podcatch manager

I see the problem now: it does not recognize my proxy server settings. When I disconnected from my corporate network it works normally.

So I guess this is a feature request: please recognize the proxy settings as set in Windows Internet Options and prompt for authentication (as iTunes does, for example) or add configuration fields for the proxy server address, port, and username/password.

Thanks.

Has anyone tried combining this with some kind of custom column which monitors whether you've played the track or not? One thing I like about iTunes is that it checks whether you've played the track, and it also picks up from where you've left off if you do happen to start it but then need to pause or play another track. I don't suppose a custom column which does the monitoring would be too difficult, but I'm not too sure about how to go about it.

I really like the component, but I think that the key in using it effectively is with a well-designed playlist.

The feed contains playlists (rather than mp3s or similar), and they aren't marked as type "audio", so the component ignores them. I'll have a think about how to handle this situation. Thanks for pointing it out.

Nausea, if you re gonna fix the above(not an issue really), mind you can register feed:// (or even itpc//) using new foobar versions.

Quote
Third party components can now register custom protocols with the File Types preferences page.

Secondly I dont know how you plan to implement "Playlist genereting UI", but a simple quick n dirty one is like album's list will do just fine imho. Just a Generate playlist's name textbox with a default  tagz value sth like: "%_pcast_name% podcast". If the user wants a unified playlist just removes %_pcast_name%.

Thanks for your work many many kudos!!!

Small buglet.

I've XP set with Foobar in the quick launch area of the Task Bar.
Also, Foobar preference is set to minimize to notification area.

Foobar open but quiet [not sure yet if matters whether current status is paused or stopped]
Podcast runs one of it's 30minute updates.

Foobar will no longer respond to the notification icon to open. A mouse over the icon with show a pop up of "podcast" as current track.
Foobar will respond to the quick launch icon and appropriately opens the existing instance and all reverts back to normal.

just FYI

Forgive my ignorance with using Foobar, I'm new to it.  This is my first post.  I am really impressed with Foobar's ability to convert 24-bit/96khz FLAC's to WAV's while maintaining their full integrity.

I'm trying to use Pod_Catcher to subscribe to the Burnout Paradise CrashTV podcasts.  I'm not quite sure what exactly I should be doing to set up the podcast.

I'm having the same problem as bellingsman did.  Except, I'm not using a proxy at all with either of these links.

http://criteriongames.com/podcast/ (http://criteriongames.com/podcast/)

itms://ax.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=282477732&ign-mscache=1 (http://itms://ax.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=282477732&ign-mscache=1)
I have even changed that to "http" and still nothing happens.

My is E:\My Videos\Burnout Podcasts

If you'd look at the site, you'll see the "Subscribe to" link on the right side.  When I click on that, Winamp launches and it cannot load the podcast properly.  I'm wondering if there might be some sort of issue with the BOP podcasts that are causing problems?

Updated to version 0.0.4 (alpha).

Implemented some of the planned changes, but not all of them yet.

Main change for this version are the podcatcher playlists which update as the feeds do. The notification icon conflict problems should also be fixed now, as the component now has its own icon. The icon does sometimes remain, which is a bug.

It seems to be stable, but let me know of any crashes or hangs.

Edit: quick release of v0.0.4b, which adds support for feed:// and itpc:// urls (including registering them in recent versions of foobar2000).

Why is the seek bar often disabled in foo_podcatcher playlists?  (I think it's only disabled on first play of each track, not the second one.)  This doesn't look like it's intentional, as the files are already downloaded, and seeking does work with keyboard shortcuts (just not with the seek bar).

halabund,
Umm are u sure those are downloaded tracks? I thought it played not dled tracks too... maybe i understood wrong...
EDIT: I checked, it seems to play tracks that are not downloaded in foo_potcatcher playlists. At first, when it's not locally cached, the seekbar doesn't work, which is logical as the file has not been downloaded fully. Additionally, it doesnt get the artist name when you haven't played the track yet. Downloaded tracks work all OK.
nausea,
anyway... great update but the icon is rather ugly. I've made a better one (imo) for u to use if you want.

also, it's weird but the podcatcher doesn't automatically download... i have to manually check and download every time...

Yes, I am talking about downloaded tracks.  The very first time they are played after having been downloaded, the seek-bar is disabled (the handle does move, but cannot be moved with the mouse).  Despite this, seeking works with keyboard shortcuts.

With non-downloaded tracks, the seek handle does not move and cannot be moved---that is reasonable.  But I was talking about downloaded tracks.
Title: foo_podcatcher
Post by: ingver on 2009-05-12 16:49:52
well maybe the podcathcer ignores the fact that the tracks are downloaded and streams *all* the tracks from the playlist. In that case, it's a bug and should be fixed.
EDIT: so the downloaded tracks behave different from the not downloaded tracks. In that case my theory is incorrect . I personally don't have that problem... i think.

That is only possible when you play the tracks in the autoplaylist generated by the podcatcher. If the downloaded tracks have the same problem globally, then it's probably not the components problem. It could be a problem with the rss feed you're subscribed to.

I get object not found errors with both versions .5 .6. Although server responds ok (200, as I see sniffing it) pod catcher responds with object not found. None of my subscriptions works, is it only me, why noone reported sth like that yet?

Also there is a bug in the way it handles (I think the years in)dates, test case subscription: http://www.awaretek.com/python/index.xml (http://www.awaretek.com/python/index.xml). I'm glad this useful component is still being developed

I've just upgraded to version 0.0.6.  It seems that the seek-bar bug is still present:  the seek bar is non functioning (greyed out and not moving) the very first time a track is played from the playlist (but it is possible to seek using the shortcut keys).  This is about already downloaded tracks.

Also, in this new version the dates look a bit funny (http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/2185/podcatcher.png).

thecircusfreak:
I get the "object not found" error when the download location is not valid. Is that the problem you have?
Also, 2006 is ok, but April only has 30 days

halabund:
I can't reproduce the seek-bar problem. Perhaps there is a conflict with another component. As they are simply mp3s on your hard-drive after downloading (but perhaps not in your media library) can you reproduce the problem with some other unplayed file?
The date problem will be fixed for the next version. I was using superscript st, nd, rd, and th for the dates, but I guess not all fonts have those characters.

Thanks for the feedback.

nausea,

The seekbar problem seems to only be present when using Columns UI.  I removed %appdata%\foobar2000, removed all 3rd party components (except podcatcher and Columns UI), and then tested it with both UIs (removing the settings directory between the tests).

I'll post this in the Columns UI thread too then, but still: I've never experienced problems like this, except with podcatcher's playist.

The strange thing is that the problem occurs only the very first time the (downloaded) track is played.  If it is stopped, then played again, the seekbar is fine.

For the reference, here are the exact steps to reproduce:

1. Use a clean foobar2000 install (remove the settings files, %appdata%\foobar2000).  Make sure Columns UI is installed.
2. Start foobar2000, choose to use Columns UI (the program offers the option on first start).
3. Configure the download dir for podcatcher, subscribe to a podcast feed, and download the first podcast.
4. Create a playlist using podcatcher.
5. Play the downloaded track from the playlist.  Observe that the seekbar is greyed out and not moving.

EDIT: component versions:  podcatcher: 0.0.6, columns ui: 0.3.8.0

EDIT2: link to post in columns ui thread (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=28647&view=findpost&p=657685)

Cool. I'll see what there is that can be done about it. Just guessing, but it may be something to do with the track not having any length info associated with it before the first play. Neither the RSS or Atom standards include this, but I think podcast feeds formatted for itunes (i.e. all of them) have an <itunes:duration> element which I'll try using in the next version.

In the meantime v0.0.7 is out with a few small changes.

Nausea,

First of all, thanks for creating a really useful plugin! I've been dealing with some podcasts by manually downloading them and others with .m3u files containing URLs. I love having a central place to manage them which can update itself from the RSS feeds.

I'm having trouble with one podcast I found. The url is: http://feeds.wnyc.org/radiolab (http://feeds.wnyc.org/radiolab)

Looking at it in FireFox, it's clear that foo_podcatcher properly adds all the MP3 files that their XML correctly tags as "MPEG Layer 3 Audio" and have a file size. However, many of their media files have no MIME type or size listed. Those URLs do not get added to the feed's list in podcatcher.

I'm not sure the best way to deal with this. You could perhaps add them based on file extension, if the MIME type is empty. I know there are a lot of potential file types, but even just *.mp3 would help a lot.

I also emailed the radio show to point out the errors in their RSS feed.

Thanks,
- LoopinFool

I finally installed this plugin a couple days ago and I think it's fantastic!
I've been looking for a very long time for a podcatcher in Foobar, Thanks!!

I have a couple suggestions for future versions:
- I second the idea of automatically tagging downloaded files in a certain way (ie setting the genre to Podcast)
- I'd love to be able to change the title of the Podcast, For example I like to group my news, tech, etc podcasts, allowing us to do this would then change the the downloaded folder
- Instead of the above, allowing us to change the downloaded folder would be cool.
- Allowing us to filter podcasts from being downloaded using TAGZ

Anyway keep up the good work!

Here's my main feature suggestion:

I'd like to have some podcasts download but others remain as links. I'm sure this would be a popular feature. Some feeds, like daily news articles and such would just be links for listening on my desktop when I have time. Others, like longer weekly podcasts should be downloaded so I can save them to another computer, memory stick, or portable media player.

It might be nice to have a "download all podcasts" option rather than a maximum of 10. It's not hard to just select them all and queue them, but what if a single RSS feed adds 20 items all at once. Only the last N would get downloaded with the current setting.

Problem with unicode podcasts?
I just added a french language podcast, the title of the podcast is: Les années lumière
It seems that the podcatcher can't read podcasts with non-english marks since it's added as "Les ann"
Furthermore, it doesn't seem to be able to download any podcasts
If I try to queue up any podcasts, I get a message that reads: The file 'C:\Downloads\Podcasts - Foobar'Les ann with Yes or No, are shown as downloaded but are never actually downloaded.

Here is the podcast in question: http://rss.radio-canada.ca/radio/lumiere.xml (http://rss.radio-canada.ca/radio/lumiere.xml)
Hope this gets fixed!
Thanks and keep up the great work

I noticed that the download directory has to exist for downloads to succeed. foo_podcatcher won't create the main download directory for you.
Perhaps that's your issue with downloads?

Hi LoopinFool,

the podcatcher downloads podcasts fine from all sources EXCEPT for the one I mentioned above with the non-english characters.
Sorry if I wasn't too clear.

I found that plugin is very nice. Actually i am subscribing 2 podcasts. But i see room for improvements.
In podcatch manager window, I would add an description column (next to name, status url, etc..)
Better playlists managing. Is it possible that podcatcher would update a playlist in foobar with new podcasts detected? One playlist for all podcasts upated automatically
Is it possible to pass the Title and Description information to foo_textdispaly?

Released another quick update. Main change is that this includes debug information so I can make use of submitted crash reports.

Only other thing is a fix for the encoding in Benji99's feed.

sirDaniel: you can currently create an updating playlist with all podcasts by right-clicking on an empty area of the feed list in the manager dialog. From the context menu select "Create playlist (all)".

Here's one quick suggestion for the auto-updating playlists.

It would be nice if they could (optionally?) be ordered oldest on top. Since foobar2000 plays lists top-to-bottom the chronology is currently reversed. You can manually reverse the playlist in foobar, but I've assumed it would get overwritten whenever the feed updates.
This would probably be a good candidate for a per-feed setting whenever you add those.

Thanks again for this great plugin! My wife has one main podcast she listens to, and the foobar2000/podcatcher combo has made it really easy for her.

Updated the first post with details of version 0.1.0.

For those interested, this version stores the feeds and podcasts in a separate file from the foobar2000 configuration, as it was causing it to balloon in size. Settings from version 0.0.x are transferred however.

Let me know of problems that have may have been introduced.

since the podcatch manager doesn't show the files anymore in its window, i hope you will find a way to show the status of a file (just url, queued, downloaded).

Thanks for the component.

Hey nausea, just now trying to get into the podcast thang and found your component. First thing I've noticed so far is that the preferences page text is clipped.

I'm using Vista x64 w/ my Font Size set to 120dpi. Occasionally I run into a program where the text isn't doesn't display right presumably because it doesn't adapt well to the dpi setting. Seems like this might be one of 'em.

Looking forward to getting my podcast groove on. Please PM me if you happen to fix this.

Released v0.1.0b. Only change is fix for a crash bug in the date parsing.

First thing I've noticed so far is that the preferences page text is clipped.

Hadn't seen this before the release, but will look into for the next one. I'll see if there is a standard way of handling this. I've wondered before what happens when people use non-default settings, but these things remain low priority until someone points them out, so thanks.

I have one problem though: Whenever I shut down and restart foobar 0.9.6.9, the entries in my podcatch manager as well as in the podcast playlist are gone. Is this intended (don't think so)? Did I miss anything in the properties dialog?

Suggestions for the long-term evolution:
- opml import/export
- be able to add the podcatch manager as an UI-element.

I've released version 0.1.1b. The main changes are related to downloading podcasts.

There is a problem with v0.1.1 for XP users so I have rolled back for now until I work out what was causing it. If you downloaded the new version and are using XP I recommend you downgrade.

Above problem is fixed in version v0.1.1b, which is now released. Get it here: http://www.unkempt.co.uk/fb2k/foo_podcatcher.html (http://www.unkempt.co.uk/fb2k/foo_podcatcher.html)

They happen not to be using one of the depreciated SDK features this component does. I would expect (as it also happens to foo_lastfm_radio) that in this case it is my use of playlist_loader, which is being replaced in the new SDK. Peter has indicated that the new SDK will be released before v1.0 final, and when it is I'll be able to use the new replacement feature.

You are right, the folder is write protected and doesn't have the foo_podatcher_config.xml. And I have no clue where the write protection comes from, I can't remove it - it always comes back. I'm using Windows XP by the way, if anyone has an idea...

Well, about the write protection: Windows Explorer tells me it is protected. But that apparently doesn't mean much. The foobar database uses the same folder and works, as well as playback statistics. I can also create new files in that  folder. So there might be a different reason why foo_podcatcher doesn't create its config.

Moderation: Removed useless full quote of the preceding post.

I see the plugin is impoving continuously, i like that. But with new features some older behaviour changed. When i create playlist for all, the newest podcasts are at the bottom. Is that intended or i messed wit something? Can i get the newest at the top of the playlist?
Ok now, while having playlist:all, when opening feed manager, the another playlist for just only one feed is created automatically. Can that creating "current" playlist can be turned off? I know it help at begining but i end up with deleting that playlist every opening of manager.
Another improvement would be option: Create playlist (selected).

Bug?: The value of dowloading podcasts speed is wrong. Ive got 128KB/s connection but value is oscillating between 11-17 kB/s in podcast downolad manager. Of course while using full speed.

Thanks for developiong that plugin, i just wanted to share my thoughts.

I've tried foobar in the past, and it has treated me well, but I've always thought "Hm, this needs a podcast support program" and lo and behold PODCATCHER!!! Anyways, I already have podcasts on my ipod, and the new stuff I download doesn't get added to the other podcasts it just get added to the music, I was wondering if there was a way to add the podcasts I've downloaded to the rest of the podcasts? Thanks.

Hey! foo_podcatcher is great! I have some suggestions for improvements: (wishlist in oder of importance to me)

1. When new rss feeds are added, the date field is filled with the date from the feed, e.g. 2009-12-20. However, once the the mp3-file for an episode has been downloaded, the value from the file seems to be used. Some podcats however only put the year in the date field and the complete date in the title. - This is annoying when one has multiple podcasts and wants to sort them according to date so as to immediately see the most recent episodes from any podcast.

My suggestion would be for foo_podcatcher to have an option to overwrite the date field in the mp3-file after downloading with the (complete) date from the rss feed. Also, consistent date notation should be ensured if different rss feeds use different date formats to allow consistent sorting.

2. It would be great to be informed with a tray-icon when new episodes are available and have finished downloading. I.e. similar to the icon used by the "Feature Watcher" component. - Nothing too distracting, just a discrete hint to take a look at your podcasts at some point...

3. Podcatcher already has the option to download only podcast newer than X days, months, etc. It would be great if a fixed no of episodes could be specified, e.g. the newest 4, so as not be dependent on the publishing frequency of the podcast.

4. When adding a new rss feed and after downloading the newest X episodes, the newest X episodes from the feed are no longer grouped with the undownloaded episodes from the feed in the grouped with UI Columns and NG Playlist. They appears as if they belonged to two different albums. E.g. one album has the downloaded album art, the "album" with the yet undownloaded episodes has no album art. - After downloading the first X episodes the album art should be applied to all (also undownloaded) episodes and they should appear grouped in one single group.

5. When adding a new rss feed, all episodes available in the rss feed are added. I would find it useful if one could specify podcatcher to only show e.g. the last 10 episodes in the playlist. - Currently it is possible to delete episodes manually from the list when it becomes too long, but it would be great to automate this.

To me, these additions would make podcatcher absolutely perfect.

Many thanks nausea for the great work!

There is one thing that is slightly annoying about how foo_podcatcher works.  Some podcasts (http://www.scientificamerican.com/podcast/podcasts.cfm?id=60-second-science) use the same filename for every clip, so podcatcher overwrites the same file again and again (and pops up a dialogue to ask for permission for overwriting).  I don't know how other podcast downloaders handle this (if they handle it at all), as I have never used any other such program.  Perhaps they rename the files using the date?

Some podcasts use the same filename for every clip, so podcatcher overwrites the same file again and again (and pops up a dialogue to ask for permission for overwriting).

You can use title-formatting code in the download path, e.g. S:\Media\Podcasts\%album%\$date(%date%).%filename_ext%, and set per-feed settings if you don't want all feeds to use a particular path.

You mean the foo_podcatcher_config.xml? I just can't recognize the sense of making removal visible not until the next loading.

In context of removed podcast (i guess the sense is to show only podcasts of interest) there is an annoyance:
You can only make all podcasts visible again if you update but this would ask you if you want to overwrite existing files. It seems to me that on one side foo_podcatcher isn't aware that these podcast was downloaded because of removal in database and on another side when it comes to storage on harddisc it "remembers" but still aks for overwriting. A little bit confusing, isn't it?

Edit
Idea: Maybe instead of removal from database marking "removed podcasts" inside database as invisible?

Hello nausea!

Here a behaviour that seems mysterious to me as i cannot comprehend its meaning:

1. When you load a podcatcher playlist you have a list of entries wich fields (Artist, Album and Title) are builded by following rule: Artist = <parent author>, Album = <parent title> and Title = <title>. Also there is no display of length.
When you then doubleclick a  podcast for playing the length is displayed and content of the field are changing: Artist = first part of <title>, Album = last part of <parent title> and Title = second part of <title>. Why is that?

2. As long as foobar is open the changes described above are stored: you can delete the podcatcher playlist and reload it again even. But after restart of foobar2000 all changes are forgotten: Also the displayed length is away.

Would like to ask if a) the switching of fields content could be disposed and b) the display of length be kept.

Thanks for Podcatcher!
Merry Christmas!

Thanks for making it possible to enable tile view without DUI again!  It seems that after playing around with podcatcher for long enough, the cover images get messed up every time, though I haven't been able to figure out what triggers this.  By "messed up" I mean that all cover images are there, but they're assigned to the wrong podcasts.  Toggling tile view might fix it temporarily.  Should I try to reset podcatcher by removing foo_podatcher_config.xml and re-subscribing to everything?

Three questions:

Ist there a way to automatically download the images embedded in the feeds ?

Any plans for a panel version of this?

Some podcasts embed some html code in the "Comment" tag of the mp3 file. I am not good @title formatting, does any one know a way NOT

Comment Entry:

What I'd like to see (I don't mind the "&quot;"):

Code: [Select]

Can you just add this possibility in podcatcher ?

Not ruling it out, but am hoping some resourceful individual will create a UI Element containing UI Panel. That would keep my implementation cleaner, and help me focus on other features.

Any chance you can add support for download paths relative to the install directory? I currently have my foobar installed in portable mode and my media library path as ..\Mp3s\ . It would be nice to have the podcast download location set to ..\Mp3s\Podcasts\

Thanks for a top component.

Hello nausea,

so far the downloaded and not downloaded podcast are placed in the podcatcher playlists.
What dow you think of a clean seperation of these two types?
I mean following: the feed manager offers the possibilty (button? checkbox) to switch between a online mode, that shows the online podcasts, and a local mode that would show only downloaded podcasts stored on disc. An automatic refresh of already open podcatcher playlists after changing mode would be nice.

Yes, is there any way to indicate that a particular podcast has been downloaded or not? I was downloading an entire series, but closed Foobar before it finished and wasn't sure which it had actually downloaded outside of looking at the actual files in the destination folder. And when I re-opened Foobar it did not continue downloading, so I manually had to select the rest to download again.

Besides that it's a great component, thanks nausea!

Hi, is there any tutorial somewhere?

Well I am not Bodhi but I would add my request for a mini tutorial for the podcatcher functions. Please go easy on me. I am a newb to really getting in the guts of Foobar. Let alone expanded functionality like Podcatcher. There are two main things I am having trouble with. The podcatcher manager/interface or whatever it should be called. I am probably overlooking something simple but this is what I get when I look for the podcatching functions;

File>Update Podcasts. Doesn't seem to do anything.

View menu> Podcatcher Download Manager and Podcatcher Feed Manager. Clicking either one opens a small dialogue box. The Feed Manager is pretty straightforward. It has a box to paste urls to the feed you want. Easy. The Download Manager is a mystery. There is nothing there other than column names such as Title and Status. I managed to get the podcast I subscribed to to appear in the main player window. The only way they would download to a folder was to highlight them and right click. This brought up a menu with "Download Podcasts" and "Remove Podcasts" and an unhilighted "Podcast Properties" that was unclickable.

The only other items related to Podcatcher is a new tab that says of course, Podcatcher. This brings up nothing different onscreen than default or new playlist tabs. It looks identical but will have whatever podcasts you tried to download listed there. And last, there is a function under Library>Configure>Tools>Podcatcher  that lets you set file path, refresh dates, etc. I am also using Columns UI. Does this make a difference? When I go to nausea's podcatcher homepage, I notice his screenshot shows a nice interface on the left side of the screen and a list of his pods on the right. This is very clean and easy to understand. I would really like to bring up a screen/panel or whatever you call it that has a few of these functions listed together. BTW, my Columns display is the NG Playlists + Playlists Tabs if that makes a difference. Sorry to be so long but this a very useful component for Foobar and I vastly prefer to try to use Foobar vs stuff like Juice or iTunes.  I have used Foobar for a couple of years but only in a very rudimentary way.  I haven't done much customising of it and I am sure I am missing easy tweaks. So again. sorry for newb questions. And a big thanks to the author. Great component.

Sorry guys. After further reading it would seem this is geared more toward the Default UI. Is this correct? I fiddled around with Layout>Enable Layout Editing Mode and got a configuration that is very close to the one shown on the homepage. One thing I have not figured out is the little panel(I think that is right) in the lower left corner of nausea's screenshot. I like it that the toolbar header has Title and Status there. This is quite easy and intuitive to read and understand what is going on with the file selected. What I can't figure out is how to get that toolbar. I went into the Layout Editing Mode and added the UI Element "toolbar header". Fine. Now how do you get it to provide the functions you need? I right clicked it and that brings up a menu of choices that seem to be the only ones available and title or status are not options. Is this panel or toolbar or whatever you call it something that was custom configured or is it part of a pre configured UI group? Thanks guys and sorry for the newb confusion. I really have been searching the forums for a hint about the toolbar functions but can't seem to find much talk of it.

File>Update Podcasts. Doesn't seem to do anything.

I think this checks the feeds for updates. A pop-up in the System Tray should appear when it finds something new, but I guess nothing happens if there is nothing.

The Download Manager is a mystery. There is nothing there other than column names such as Title and Status.

For me (in Default UI) it says "No current downloads." - I guess it will show file transfer status if it is downloading something.

Podcast Properties works for me when I select a single podcast - it diplays some data and IDs and stuff, and download status (didn't notice this before). It is greyed out if I select more than one.

I certainly hope this is possible but have doubts as to whether it is feasible as I would have thought that UI panels depend on the default UI's dll being loaded.  I very much would like to use the podcatcher in columns ui.

I believe a number of columns ui components eg Lyric Show Panel have been updated to support the default ui eg. the Lyric Show Panel, but of course understand if this will take a lot of coding time, I have a lot of respect for all the devs making plugins available to the public for free!

Problem report:

The Podcatcher playlists are editable (i.e. items can be deleted).  Since these playlists are managed and updated automatically by Podcatcher, shouldn't they be locked?  If my memory serves me well, they used to be locked in an earlier version, but I'm not sure...

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm currently working on v0.1.6, and will try to take these things into account.

The main changes implemented so far are a preference for re-tagging files on download (as a global and per-feed option), the Podcatcher Feed Properties Dialog implemented as a Default UI element, feeds are checked in parallel three at a time, and the component notes when podcast items were last "seen" in their respective feeds (which I might use in future versions for either manually or automatically removing "dead" podcast items).

I've had a partially successful go at making the group headers in the various dialogs respect the Default UI colours, but that's more complicated than you'd hope.

I'm working on a preference which analyses when and how often a feed is updated and will automatically adjust the update period accordingly. For example, if a feed has historically updated mid-day Tuesday, check half-hourly around then, perhaps hourly on the rest of Tuesday, and half-daily the rest of the week. Or if a feed hasn't updated for a few months, check it daily.

There is also a long-standing bug where update and download threads are lost(?) and don't return. This is evident when a download is stalled and more can't be started, or if the feeds can't be updated (and perhaps are all marked as queued). Restarting foobar2000 is the workaround. I think this happens on my laptop when it is put to standby in the middle of such an operation and I suppose some function in the thread doesn't time-out when it is woken. Anyway, that's something I need to investigate before the next release.

I'm busy at the moment though so it might take some time before release.

Nausea. Thanks again for the great component. This is what podcatching should be. Not a  bunch stuff you don't really use. I would love nothing more than to ditch Juice and Doppler for good. Foobar is such a good player and this kills two birds with one stone. Thanks again.

Any chance to get "post-processing" for downloaded entries?

Say, I'd like to speed them up 25% with foo_dsp_sountouch, run through ReplayGain or maybe remove "audio banner" in the beginning with some external program.

Then you could also "generalize" re-tagging as one of post-processing actions.

However, the generated playlist only contains the podcasts up to last August.  The last one is "Proof" from Aug 10, even though many more have been released since, as can be seen in the feed (when viewed in the browser).  I also tried useing the feed URL http://feeds.wnyc.org/radiolab (http://feeds.wnyc.org/radiolab) , but it just gave me an empty playlist.

Indeed. When you said about "seen in the browser" I thought you confuse web page content vs feed content.
But the feed really contains the new entries:

<pubDate>Mon, 08 Feb 2010 14:38:48 -0800</pubDate>

---
The problem I guess is the structural change of the feed. E.g. the latest entry with tag

<media:content url="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~r/radiolab/~5/ian8MWagS7w/radiolab_podcast10proof.mp3" fileSize="7982163" type="audio/mpeg" />

was on 10 Aug 2009. After that mp3 is only referenced in something like:

<enclosure url="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~r/radiolab/~5/DJFiSgBSIRU/radiolab_podcast15sum.mp3" length="0" type="" /><feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://audio.wnyc.org/radiolab_podcast/radiolab_podcast15sum.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

Post by: nausea on 2010-02-14 11:56:18
sabio is right. The problem with that particular feed is the blank type attribute for the recent entries. foo_podcatcher is looking for the "audio/*" type. There were also similar problems with some of the other feeds posted. I've made the next version more tolerant of these things and those feeds now work properly.

I'll release an update with these and some more changes in the next week or so.

Just recently got back into foobar too long of a stint with iTunes. I used iTunes to manage my podcasts, so I'm glad to see this component for fb2k! I hope you keep it going.

The only real complaint I've had was previously brought up by ubiquitousnfunky, regarding the date tagging...

Things do start to get quite messy when the dates from the feeds are simply replaced with the year, as I'd like to keep them in chronological order. If this can be fixed, or if theres some other kind of workaround, that would be much preferred.

If the download location is changed, a φ is appended to the podcast name in the feed manager.  If re-tagging is enabled, a τ is appended.  Are these Greek letters really the symbols that you meant to append, or is it just misbehaving on my machine?

Another question: what is the Orphaned Podcast category for exactly?
Title: foo_podcatcher
Post by: nausea on 2010-02-27 12:34:46
Yes, they are correct. Delta for the download period, tau for tagging, and phi for download path. (There's some convoluted logic in there somewhere...)

They are meant to act as reminders/hints that a feed has custom preferences, but I'm open to ideas of other ways of showing this. The tile view could use overlay icons for example.

It's also possible to turn them off in the preferences.

Edit: Orphaned podcasts are those that remain if a feed is removed. The Orphaned Podcasts category provides an easy way of seeing these without having to pick them individually out of an all items Podcatcher playlist.

Oh, no, they're fine  And this is a useful feature.  It's just that using Greek letters seemed a bit unusual, so I was wondering if I was seeing them because of some font/display problem on my computer.

Thanks for the new version!  This is a big improvement over the previous one.  Re-tagging and handling incorrect mime types solved the two biggest annoyances.

Post by: halabund on 2010-02-27 13:28:30
I found a small problem:  There is something wrong with the artwork display in the Feed Manager. First, note that I don't have the Feed Manager docked into the main UI (because I use Columns UI).  Here's how to reproduce the problem:

start foobar2000
open the Feed Manager using View -> Podcatcher Feed Manager
wait a couple of seconds until all the artwork appears
close it
open it again
note that the default podcast icon is used for all the podcasts now

After restarting foobar2000, the proper artwork appears again, until the Feed Manager is closed and re-opened.

Another observation: Columns UI can display artwork inline in the playlist.  Most of the podcasts, however, just show the default image, even though they have their own artwork in the Feed Manager.  This problem was present in previous versions too, but I can't figure out what causes the missing artworks (seems mostly random).  Currently only the two very last items show an artwork here.  Previous items from the same podcasts lack the artwork too.  (Note: the artwork pane will only show an artwork for the same elements that have it in the playlist too.  I don't think this is Columns UI specific, it's just easier to see (and more noticeable) which items have an artwork and which don't when viewing them in the playlist, which displays the artwork for all items at the same time.)

EDIT: It may be that it's only shown for downloaded items in this version.

And a suggestion:  If it is possible to do, it would be useful to have the podcasts tagged with the full date (when re-tagging), i.e. year-month-day, not just year.

Yes, that's something I haven't addressed yet. When a podcast is deleted it is completely forgotten about and so treated as new when the feed is updated again.

It would be simple to keep track of a list of podcast ids for deleted podcasts and ignore them in feeds, but the challenge would be in providing a way to let the user undo a delete.

@LoopinFool:  Yep, it works fine in 0.1.6 now.  If all the popular podcatchers followed the standard properly then these workarounds wound't be needed because publishers would be forced to be more careful ...

foo_podcatcher does not do anything to provide album art. The feed images you see in the Podcatcher Feed Manager when tile view is enabled are only used in that part of the UI. They are read from the feed and cached in the "feed images" folder under your default download folder. What you are seeing is embedded album art which foobar2000 is reading from the downloaded files. Sometimes it's there, sometimes it isn't.

If all the popular podcatchers followed the standard properly then these workarounds wound't be needed because publishers would be forced to be more careful ...

Oh quick question, I never really figured out what's the purpose of the Podcatcher -> Remove Podcast option.
What does it do exactly? What happens if I don't remove a podcast, but delete the file?
What happens if I remove the podcast and don't delete the file?

Thanks!

I never really figured out what's the purpose of the Podcatcher -> Remove Podcast option.
This removes the items from foo_podcatcher's internal list of podcasts. It doesn't currently store any reference to the deleted item so when the feed is checked again it will be re-added to the list. This needs to be changed.

What happens if I don't remove a podcast, but delete the file?
foo_podcatcher will recognise that the downloaded file has been deleted and will revert to using the online file.

What happens if I remove the podcast and don't delete the file?
The file remains but foo_podcatcher is not aware of it and it will not appear in any Podcatcher playlists. When the feed is checked again the removed podcast will be re-added to the list.

Not sure. Are the podcasts marked as downloaded (see the Podcast Properties under the Podcatcher heading in the track properties dialog)?

As thecircusfreak said you could add a custom Local/Remote column, but I don't think there is a way of limiting it to Podcatcher playlists (perhaps there is in Columns UI?). I personally have a selection properties UI element in my setup and can see if the Podcast Offline URL property has a value. Not something with an elegant solution yet though, as the API doesn't give components access to the playlist appearance.

Yes there is a limiting option in CUI.

In Default UI,  q-stankovic you  could just append a (N) to the title  of the few tracks that are a network location, a background change, or sth like that. All satisfactory solutions IMO.

I've checked "Included only downloaded an new items" but not all downloaded podcasts are shown.
Do I miss something?
Not sure. Are the podcasts marked as downloaded (see the Podcast Properties under the Podcatcher heading in the track properties dialog)?

I think that was the point. Someone had "...;deleted" at the end after I changed the download location.
Thank you for the hint.

Another thing. I only allow 3 files downloading at once. Sometimes fb2k get freezed and I have to kill the process.
Just now I have the problem that the 5th download is still shown as queued and foobar got freezed.

Edit: And the fresh downloaded podcasts aren't shown again after restart.

That's a bug and needs fixing. Do you have a reliable way of reproducing it? Does it happen just as a track finishes downloading, or during the download at some point?

Did it happen with older versions?

It happens during a download at some point - sometimes it's working sometimes not.

With this cast http://download.br-online.de/podcast/radiofeature/cast.xml (http://download.br-online.de/podcast/radiofeature/cast.xml) foobar freezes at every download.

About the older versions, I don't really know cause I've started downloading just now.

Thx for your time.

Haven't managed to reproduce.

A few more questions:

Does it happen if the Download Manager dialog is closed (including not embedded as an element in the UI)?

Do you see the dialog asking to overwrite already downloaded files? It's modal and could perhaps be appearing off-screen for some reason.

fb2k 1.0.1. beta 2 - podcatcher 0.1.6c(beta) , XP SP3

First I thought it only happens if the Podcatcher Donwload Manager is open (not embedded) but then it happend also if it is closed - regardless of overwriting already downloaded files or not.

Sorry nausea, that I can't give you more hints, but now I think it's a problem of my configuration but I don't know why.

@nausea & thecircusfreak

Thanks! I think i will create a general useful column: if it is a stream then nothing is shown - if it is a local file a special sign will be shown. In latter case i will use custom colors which shows if a local file is in library or not. That column might be helpful in other contextes too.

please forgive the extremely n00bish question, but can someone explain to me how to use the re-tag feature, what it does exactly (i know it re-tags, but does it take the title, artist, and album title of teh and put it in the id3 fields) , and if re-tagging these podcasts will force them in the podcast section on my idevices with the correct information.

A podcast essentially is an xml(description) file which links to a bunch of audio files. Well, it's pretty common that the actual audio files podcast is linking to are untagged files. What this option does is that it exports the tile, date, author etc from the description file and writes them to the corresponding id3 fields.

In case this is not enabled, you end up with a taggless file, which the only thing you know about  is its filename, usually sth like podcast11.mp3

I m not sure what you mean in the end, but podcasts are normal audio files. Your device  probably recognizes them by some tagging, maybe a podcast genre?. This is sth  you would have to do by yourself, podcatcher's retag wont do that.

Btw, nausea, I dont know if this is already happening, have you considered replacing tags only if the corresponded value is blank? Dont know if this is an overkill, I just bring it to your attention.

i am pretty ipod savvy, not foobar savvy.  i previously used winamp to sync to my players.  i stupidly updated the firmware and the person who developed the only plugin for winamp that recognizes the iphone and itouch gave up, so here i am and why i asked the question.  as i said, i figure that the files get tagged, i didn't know what was tagged and what enabled the tagging.  i ask because i have the re-tag feature enabled, and i downloaded and synced a podcast to my player.  addressing the bold part, not only did it not recognize the file as a podcast, it was not tagged at all.  i had enabled the feature in the preferences, but just in case i made sure it was enabled it for this podcast just to be safe.  its set to (use global value [re-tag]).  nothing happened, hence my question.

it was n00bish because i don't use foobar for anything other than to sync my players and am not familiar with all of its features not because i have never used an ipod before.  i hate itunes, it's why i went with winamp and now foobar to do my audio management.

Feature request (I know other people are asking questions along these lines):
[blockquote]I'd like an option to have the Podcatcher playlist for a particular feed only show the "downloaded" items. That way I can easily get the playlist to only show the stuff I haven't listened to yet.
[/blockquote]
There is a workaround, though. I can use foo_podcatcher to manage the downloads and an Autoplaylist based on the path name. I don't think this is ideal (it pollutes my Library with podcasts for one thing), but it does work.

Hi,

thanks again, great component!

Is there a way to make it ignore caps when grouping channels by author? I.e. group "DKULTUR" and "dkultur" together, or "Radioeins" and "radioeins"?

Also it'd be great to be able to import/export opml in the future... for some reason all my channels vanished today (not sure if it was a crash), to re-import them would have been much easier using opml.

Otherwise it's just perfect...

I've been working on what will become version 0.1.7.

The main changes so far are enabling the adaptive update schedule feature I'd mentioned in an earlier post, the ability to filter/search in the Podcast Manager dialog, and the option to tag all downloads with the "Podcast" genre.

The adaptive update feature still needs some tweaks, but the release should be within a few weeks.

Edit: The new version will also have a change to how the config is saved. It now writes to a new file (with a different name) and renames the old config file before renaming the new file to the correct config's name. Finally, and only if all the above worked, it deletes the renamed old config.

I've never had a problem with my config, but the other day I noticed that the foo_podcatcher config for my development foobar2000 install was corrupted and wasn't loading. Opening the file in a text editor revealed it was half written. I think what had happened was the computer restarted to install updates and the foobar2000 running the debug build of foo_podcatcher (which runs more slowly) was probably killed by Windows before closing cleanly. Perhaps this is what happened to Hank H.'s install?

The change should mean that if the new config is corrupted for some reason, the old one will still be there, and can either simply be opened by foobar2000, or manually renamed by the user as a last resort. Version 0.2.0 will use SQLite in the back-end to (hopefully!) avoid problems like this.

I have a couple very basic questions about podcatcher. For what its worth, I'm using Columns UI.

I can't seem to get the podcatcher playlist to sort by date descending. Clicking on the column header doesn't do anything. Other playlists seem to be able to sort properly. Am I doing something wrong?

Also, how can I make a podcast go away? For example, the radiolab podcast has entries back for several years. I'd like to remove ones I've already listened to or don't plan to listen to. If I "remove podcast", they seem to come back the next time the podcast is updated.

Some visual indicator of the download status in the playlist would be great.

First of all thank you a lot for the update.

One question: I do not get the purpose of the "archive" feature. You can move podcasts you do not want in there, but as soon as you delete it from there it gets downloaded again?

And are there any news concerning the podcatcher memorising what feed items you've already downloaded but deleted?
I have 10 GB podcasts on my HD and I cannot delete them because unless they are really old (= aren't in the feed anymore), they just get downloaded again.
The archive feature seems to be a workaround for that, but this way my Archive Playlist will become huge within a short time, if every feed item I do not want has to be moved in there.

Or am I missing something?

Just released v0.1.7.1 with a few fixes: http://www.unkempt.co.uk/fb2k/foo_podcatcher.html (http://www.unkempt.co.uk/fb2k/foo_podcatcher.html)

Sebert: The archive is indeed intended as a workaround for deleted podcasts being re-added as soon as you update. The Archive playlist essentially provides a way to see a list of the removed podcasts, so that the archive action can be undone. An archived podcast should not appear in any other playlist, so if it does let me know. Archived podcasts in 0.1.7.1 are no longer automatically downloaded.

icedtea: The show only downloaded preference only affects the playlists created by right clicking in the Feed Manager and selecting Create Playlist (these are the Podcatcher: Feed Name playlists you remember). The main playlist includes all non-archived podcasts. I haven't fixed the "Recently downloaded podcasts shows multiple entries for some podcasts" bug yet though. Thanks for reporting it and expect a fix soon.

I just downloaded 0.1.7.1. It looks like a big improvement - thanks!

My suggestions:
- Provide a way to delete all downloaded podcasts associated with archived podcasts
- Sorting by date ascending/descending doesn't seem to work
- Give a way to build columns containing the stuff in the podcast properties (stuff that is in the Properties tab of the properties dialog, not the Metadata tab). I'm using Coumns UI by the way.

It's definitely podcatcher that crashes foobar since all other components are default, and everything's fine again after I remove the dll.

I've put v0.1.6d back up at http://www.unkempt.co.uk/fb2k/foo_podcatcher.html (http://www.unkempt.co.uk/fb2k/foo_podcatcher.html) while this bug is worked out.

Androidmonk: When you say "especially when I try the edit/feed manager", do you mean it doesn't hang when the manager dialog is not open? That would be very useful information.

mjed & dafnis: The fact that it didn't happen with older versions is helpful, and should narrow it down. Thanks.

icedtea: The lack of sorting is by design, but could change in future versions as a bunch of people seem to want to sort. The playlists are currently all sorted by publish date, except the Recently Downloaded Podcasts playlist, which is sorted by date downloaded.

And now a feature request:

Due to a couple OS crashes my podcatcher forgot what podcasts were downloaded during the session, and so on system restart kept asking if it should overwrite existing files. If foobar has been running for several days in a row, it means a lot of files.
So I wonder if it would make sense to perform the new "safe" config file updating at predefined intervals, or even in a paranoid mode every time a podcast is downloaded successfully.

thank you

Yes it would. It would be a slight change though to how the image downloads work, as they are currently only downloaded as needed by the Feed Manager dialog. I'll look at implementing this for a future release. It would of course not enable album art for not downloaded podcasts.

All those looking for auto-backup, foo_jesus appears to save the foo_podcatcher settings.

The ability to set genre is great, nausea, but some hardware players (Sansa etc) require «Podcasts» instead of «Podcast» to function properly.
Would it be hard to put a text field there instead of checkbox? It would also help non-english users.

Retag is useful, but some casters have a very messy tags

Hello,
I am also amazed. This component is great.

2 little comments:
perhaps it requires handling of more encoding. For me the following podcast fails and I think it's because of the iso-8859-2 content encoding: http://www.lumen.sk/podcast/rozhlasova_hra.php (http://www.lumen.sk/podcast/rozhlasova_hra.php)

There is an accessibility problem related to sliders and static texts in the main preference page and also custom feed properties dialog.
Static texts which give a textual representation to nearby sliders should be placed after the slider in the azorder too.
I don't think there is some spec for this but for  me as a blind user it would be nice if the static text displaying help text would be placed first in the azorder eventhough they are usually displayed at the bottom.

Thanks

Foobar properties only show the genre "Podcast" if I open the file at least once. If I just select the feed item and select properties the tag is still empty, if I open it, the tag is suddenly there. Why is this?

Thanks

Topping that, I'd really like a "Newest Downloaded Podcasts" that shows only the most recently released downloaded podcast for each feed, mainly for easy syncing to my iPod. The current "Recently Downloaded Podcasts" works well enough for now, but I have to avoid downloading any old podcasts if I want to maintain that.

Great work so far, nausea - we really appreciate your efforts.

Thanks for your work, you are almost there.
The Archive feature is confusing: I thought an archived podcast would go somewhere else (a different folder?) for long-term storage, but apparently the archived episodes are not downloaded at all. If you want to say "Do not download", why don't you say so?
I don't see how the takeup rate would be decent without an OPML import function.

I think I mentioned this before (like half a year ago). My podcast items still show "1601-01-01 03:00:00" as date.
all of them (all my subscriptions are from last.fm, so maybe that's the culprit, others seem to work)
I would really appreciate help since the weird date messes up my grouping , maybe u could do an option to use "podcast downloaded" in "DATE" field of the downloaded podcasts? (not sure what would happen to the undownloaded then )

Oh, and is it possible to add podcatcher podcast manager and download manager permanently to the layout? as panels (columns, whatever). I'm talking about columns UI.
otherwise awesome add-on

I successfully was using fb2000 v1.0.2 with 0.1.6 of podcatcher, and thought I'd update to fb2000 v1.0.3 and v 0.1.7 simultaneously.  First, forgive the noobie question, but is there a preferred sequence/method for updating to more recent versions (and in the process preserving the subscribed feeds)?  Does update methodology differ if updating using portable vs installed fb2000?

Unfortunately when I now try to subscribe to a known feed (including several listed above as "working") nothing happens as it did/does in previous versions.  I don't get a response from podcatcher asking if I want to add the subscription, nothing...just sits there after I type in the feed.  It must be something basic, but I don't know what settings/etc I've screwed up.

I have tried this with both portable and installed versions of fb2000.

Finally, is there a convenient way to determine what version of podcaster is currently being used?

Again, apologies for basic questions.  REALLY love the plugin!!!

I can answer the version question.
Go to preferences in foobar2000 (File->Preferences menu or Ctrl+P). Click on "Components" in the upper left corner. All of your installed components are listed there with their version strings.

Your subscribed feeds should be maintained. There's no real change between 0.1.6x and 0.1.7.x in that regard. The foo_podcatcher_config.xml file is stored in the foobar2000 profile directory. You can find out where that is on the General page of the preferences.

Are the Podcatcher entries in the foobar2000 View menu?

Thanks for your help on trying to solve my problem stated above.  More details, now that I understand things a bit better.

I have two portable foobar2000 I use, in two separate directories.  One v1.0.2.1, the other v1.0.3.

I use podcatcher 0.1.7.4 and it seems to allow new subscriptions (and download existing subscriptions) fine with fb2000 v1.0.2.1.  However, when I try podcatcher 0.1.7.4 with fb2000 v1.0.3, using a copy of the config.xml file I used when testing with fb2000 v1.0.2.1, while the "subscribe to podcast" menu item is available and can be chosen, when a new feed URL is entered, no response occurs (where there should be "do you want to subscribe to this feed").  Furthermore, it appears that while existing feeds in the config.xml file are recognized, updates fail on them.

Any suggestions as to why podcatcher 0.1.7.4 doesn't function the same with my fb2000 v1.0.3 portable (and presumably installed) version as it does with my fb2000 v1.0.2.1 portable version would be appreciated!  I guess my other plugins I use in my two versions of fb2000 I've tried this on aren't exactly identical, but I shouldn't think having not yet installed other plugins when I upgraded to fb2000 v1.0.3 should cause this issue.

Thanks for ideas!

Do you see any relevant messages in the foobar2000 console (View/Console)?

My first guess is that it's failing to connect to the internet. The current behaviour is for feed updates to fail silently, even if it's a new feed. (This should be changed.)

Yeah, that makes sense, and it IS the problem.  Console indicates that failing to connect to the internet.  What I don't understand is why I can fire up FB2000 v 1.0.3 and not be able to connect and then 5 seconds later fire up FB2000 v 1.0.2.1 and have it connect to the internet fine.  But that must be my problem, either some setting I inadvertently made in the v 1.0.3 or my firewall settings (though I disabled my firewall).

Hi there, I just tried Podcatcher and I like what I see, but I stumbled on a little problem (for the record: I use foobar2000 1.0.3 (regular install) and Podcatcher 1.7.4 on Windows Vista 32-bit).

On this (http://www.idesherpa.se/podcast) site, in Firefox's podcast subscription interface, all episodes of the podcast are named Download.mp3 and when I try to download an episode after the first one Podcatcher asks me if I want to overwrite Download.mp3. Here, there is room for improvement because if I click "yes" the episode is overwritten (not desirable) but if I click "no" it doesn't download the episode. There should be an option to rename files with identical filenames (perhaps in preferences or podcast-specific preferences). When I had downloaded several episodes (overwriting the existing file) the podcast listed several episodes with the same duration and with the same title as the first episode, but when I deleted the podcast and added it again and downloaded another episode first the duration changed to the duration of that episode but the title was still the same as the first one. But here comes the funny part; when I download an episode from Firefox (directly to disc, bypassing Podcatcher) it renames the file to [name of episode].mp3 and when I open the file in foobar2000 the title says [name of episode]. I don't know if this is some evil voodoo that the site uses but if Firefox can catch the new filename then it should be possible for Podcatcher.

By the way, thanks for all your hard work and despite my issues, this plugin great.

m_foo:
I had his problem too at one point. The download path in the location accepts title formatting, which defaults to something like S:\Media\Podcasts\%album%\%filename_ext%, but you can change it to something like to solve your problem:

S:\Media\Podcasts\%album%\$date(%date%)\%filename_ext%
or S:\Media\Podcasts\%album%\%title%.$ext(%filename_ext%)

You can do this either globally in the preferences, or on a per-feed basis by double clicking the feed in the Feed Manager, and then double clicking one of the listed properties.

Sebert: I've been working on v0.2.0 again recently. I've basically done the database integration, and am slowly bringing the feature list to parity with v0.1.7.4. When that's done I might release it to get it more widely tested before adding new features. No ETA yet though.

Apologies if I've missed this in the thread, but I couldn't find an answer.

Is there any reason why some podcast episodes are downloaded and others are played from their remote location?  I'm pretty anal, and I like to have an archive of the shows I listen to.

NB: Episodes in question have the download and updated date of "1601-01-01 01:00:00".

Many thanks for this component, it's very useful to me.

Edit: Bah, just answered my own dumb question!  I assume this was because I had the automatic time range as "1 day".  This machine is my work machine, so if a podcast was released over the weekend it was deemed too old to download I assume.  I have updated now to "All time".  That said, it was showing up as a new podcast, but just not being downloaded. I'm still a little confused at the conflict between these two facts... and on checking again I guess I would be directed to the "Include only downloaded items in Podcatcher playlist" checkbox.  If I had this checked (which I didn't) presumably there would be better parity between the two.

...and of  course you can manually download any past podcasts.

Also a visual indicator showing(using a script)  if  a podcast is in a local location or not might help you reducing any  confusions.

A playlist indicator is a very nice idea, and maybe a combination of both your suggestions would be a nice solution.

As it is I'd rather be lazy and use "All time", so I don't have to change my column script specifically for podcatcher, or do any more clicking than I have to.  I know, I'm lazy.

Is there any way to access the properties added by podcatcher (like Podcast Status) through queries? Something like %podcatcher_podcast_status% ? Again a question concerning the Genre - podcast tag.
Foobar properties only show the genre "Podcast" if I open the file at least once. If I just select the feed item and select properties the tag is still empty, if I open it, the tag is suddenly there. Why is this?
I was going to ask this same question.  I'm just trying to get myself together* with podcasts on my iPod, and I use foo_podcatcher and foo_dop.  The plan is not to listen to them in foobar, but use foobar to transfer them to my iPod.  If the genre tag is only set on play this won't help me.

* On a vaguely related note, I recenly discovered smart playlists (http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/) which makes listening to multiple podcasts much easier (useful when running, and unable to mess about too much). Only relevant in the fact that my playlist looks for the "Podcasts" genre value.

I agree. I know this has been raised before and Nausea said it might be implemented in the future.  Just adding my support for this request.

Also, does the Podcatcher playlist work with Columns UI grouping scripts? I have some unexpected grouping behaviour, but I can't see anything in the metadata to explain it. Is this connected with the sorting?

create an autoplaylist  to the folder podcatcher saves its podcasts.

- Good workaround, this solved my grouping issues as well.

It would still be great if this behaviour was standard in the Podcatcher playlist though.

Files and directories are being created without an Owner on Fat32 volumes in Windows 7.

Not all files and directories have this problem, but some do.

On a Windows 7 system set the Podcast directory to sit on a FAT32 volume.

Subscribe to some podcasts.

Download some shows.

This is easiest to see if you have it configured to show the File Size in the Playlist columns.

Notice that not all shows show a downloaded size -- even though the Podcast Status shows that they are downloaded (and the context menu switches to "redownload".)

In a CMD window, you can use "DIR /Q" to list the owner. In my case, I see "//Everyone" and "..." the files/directories. The files/directories that show an owner of "..." with "DIR /Q" show up as having no owner when I use the "Owner" column in the Windows Explorer. These files/directories can not be deleted.

Better yet, since this only happens on Fat32 volumes -- and Fat32 volumes lack the "Security" tab in the File Properties -- there is no easy way to correct the problem. Once I realized the problem I copied what I could to another volume and reformatted as NTFS.
Title: foo_podcatcher
Post by: yam655 on 2010-11-29 18:55:35
It looks like I was wrong.

It isn't limited to just FAT32 volumes. Also, I'm not sure if it is a Foobar2000 bug or a Windows bug.

The problem happens when you have filename or directory that ends in an ellipsis.

It appears that Windows Explorer -- and the CMD echo > FILE / mkdir will not let you create a filename/directory ending in an ellipsis.

I had logic in place to shorten directory names (and I may have used similar logic for the filenames earlier, but I am not sure) which resulted in an ellipsis if the directory name was shortened.

All of my directories with ellipsis in them show as not having an Owner in Windows Explorer.

Hello

Thanks for the great plugin.

Just one question.

Is it possible to access the "Podcast description" tag that is visible in metadata and make it a column in foobar? Or retag it to another standard tag in the file? The automatic retaging uses only "Podcast Title" but not the "Podcast Description" where in my case is more important information than in "Podcast Title" tag.

Thanks

Thanks!  Version 0.2.2 fixed this, indeed.

However, as an avid podcast listener (70 different podcasts at the moment), I encountered these problems:

1. I need to download all my podcasts in one Windows folder, then put every file from one podcast feed into a subfolder (alternatively, put all the podcast files into one folder, but rename them so that you can know what they contain).
However, every podcast producer has their own naming rules and you have to change the name of the folder in advance, otherwise it would be a mess.
When I changed all the download folders Podcatcher assigned to every podcast (it took me a while!), I noticed that Podcatcher rather created files with the name of the intended folders, instead of folders where to put every file (did I do something wrong, I don’t know, because there is no user guide for Podcatcher!).
Moreover, these files didn’t have the .mp3 extension, some had a partial name (it seems that the ‘ sign confused Podcatcher) and some files became almost impossible to delete from Windows (a file containing a space at the end, because Podcatcher created a partial name).  In other words, it was a bigger mess.
This means I still have to use FeedDemon instead of Podcatcher for now.

2. Another problem: it’s impossible to create custom playlists that fit my needs.
I listen to all these podcasts, but I have a selection to listen on foobar, another to listen on my smartphone.
So, I managed to create a selection of podcast feeds that are meant to be listened on foobar.
However, I have no control over this list: I would like to only see there new and downloaded podcasts.  If I listen to some, I would probably automatically delete them (except in some cases if they are really good and want to keep them) and I don’t want to see them anymore.  The problem is, Podcatcher would still put them into the list, so I’m never sure where I stopped and what podcast I have listened to or not.

I hope my descriptions are clear enough.
If these two problems were solved, Podcatcher would start to be usable, in my opinion.

As additional features, I would like to see:
1. The Podcatcher playlists not locked, so that I could manually add some old podcast files from my hard disk to listen immediately instead of creating a new playlist.
2. If you don’t assign a download folder to podcast files, you can still listen to them, but where are they stored?  Because I hope they don’t go to some obscure folder and accumulate on my hard disk without me being able to get rid of them.
3. Believe or not, Podcatcher is not easy to use for new users, even if you are a long time foobar user.  A user guide for Podcatcher would be absolutely necessary, in my opinion.
4. Let me add, as another user said, that accessing specific podcast tags like %podcast_downloaded% would be very useful.
5. Also, the new feature of importing OPML files, unfortunately is incompatibile with an OPML exported from FeedDemon.

Let me know what you think about this.

Thanks for the updates, nausea!

I described a behaviour here (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=69053&view=findpost&p=675426) that still seems mysterious to me: i can't explain what and why it is happening. Hope, you can say some words to it.

I have one small feature request: i would like to have an option so that a doubleclick instead of a singleclick sends the content to the podcatcher playlist. The singleclick behaviour causes the changing of podcatcher playlist in situations i don't want the changing: f.e. using context menu of other podcasts.

q-stankovic:
Sometimes feeds have different infos for the casts than the files themselves, and no length. When foo_podcatcher creates the playlists it uses the info from the feeds, but when you play a file foobar2000 gets the tags from the file. You can use the retag downloads option to help with this.

Speech:
Thanks for the detailed comments.

The download path needs to have a filename included, for example: file://S:\Media\Podcasts\%album%\%filename_ext%
(I now realise that the feed preferences dialog says 'Location' rather than 'Path' - in an earlier version it was in fact a directory.)

I'm concerned about files with illegal characters being created, and I'll look at this this weekend. I replace illegal characters, but perhaps there are additional rules I need to account for.

I'll take your playlist feature requests into account when making changes. I like the idea of automatically archiving listened podcasts, or not listing them based on the playcount, but I hesitate about deleting files because of the "except in some cases if they are really good and want to keep them" case. There is already a preference to only show downloaded and new podcasts in playlists.

I haven't been able to find any example FeedDemon OPML files online, so could you send me one in a personal message on the forum here. A single outline element should be enough.

Also, foobar2000 streams not downloaded podcast files over http. So don't worry, they are not filling up you hard-disk somewhere.

I'm sorry if this has been covered before, but I did a search on this thread for "pause" and "resume" and didn't find anything.

So, long story short, I have a very unstable internet connection and would really appreciate being able to resume downloads. Pausing would also be a nice touch.

Also, there's a slight bug: Sometimes, when a download goes awry and then I quit foobar, the foobar2000.exe process remains running until I kill it with Task Manager.

Hi,

opml-export doesn't work here (version 0.2.3/foobar 1.1.2). When I choose "export", type in a filename and click "save", the dialogue closes but nothing happens - there is no opml-file.

One more minor request: While podcatcher is downloading, the download-dialogue gets in the way/covers the podcatcher-playlist, especially when there are several different downloads going on. It would be nice to be able to minimize or at least move the download-dialogue.

foo_podcatcher 0.2.3 beta keeps trying to download items which are no longer in the feed, I think.

I created a feed by scraping a website.  Since feeding it to foo_podcatcher I have made various changes, including limiting the number of items.  foo_podcatcher seems to still be trying to download items which are no longer in the feed.

Is there some sort of cache that records what needs downloading which it is still using because the orignal error was seen to be temporary?  Is there any way I can tell it to give up?  The current "Download Range" is not being adhered to.

Seems like it would be good to update the queue using the current feed.  Also, or alternatively, some way to tell it to give up after X tries, if that is indeed my problem.

Thanks for this great plugin - very handy indeed.
However, I found some behaviour regarding tagging that IMHO is a bug that needs to be fixed. The behaviour is seen for all podcast feeds I'm subscribed to.

Here's an actual example for a podcast from this feed:
http://www.dradio.de/rss/podcast/sendungen/diereportage/ (http://www.dradio.de/rss/podcast/sendungen/diereportage/)

Say the FEED info for a podcast is this:
Artist: DKULTUR
Title: Der geläuterte Samenspender
Album: dradio-Die Reportage
Date: 2011-01-09

Now, once I start playing the podcast, the info is read from the remote FILE, and it looks like this:
Artist: Wenderoth, Andreas [Note: this will be different each time, depending on who authored the podcast in question]
Title: Der geläuterte Samenspender
Album: Deutschlandradio Kultur
Date: 2011

This is also the info that the file contains when I download it directly (if you want to check: http://podcast-mp3.dradio.de/podcast/2011/...05_61ec8bc0.mp3 (http://podcast-mp3.dradio.de/podcast/2011/01/09/drk_20110109_1305_61ec8bc0.mp3) )

This is all fine.

But now I try downloading using foo_podcatcher.
If I choose "re-tag" globally, the FEED info is read and then written to the downloaded file. I guess this is functioning as designed.
If I choose "don't re-tag" for the feed in question, the behaviour is the same, i.e. it looks the "don't re-tag" doesn't actually get applied if I set it for a particular feed.
But that's not what bugs me.
Here's the issue:
If I choose "don't re-tag" globally, the file is downloaded, and the tags are wiped from the downloaded file. So instead of the tags in the file (which are there and which I would actually like to have in the downloaded file), I get a file without any tags whatsoever, which shows up - quite unpleasantly - like this:
Artist: ?
Title: drk_20110109_1305_61ec8bc0
Album: ?
Date: ?

I'm using foo_podcatcher 0.2.3 beta.

my podcatcher keeps buggin me about one feed i have.
every 60 seconds it asks me if i want to subscribe to it. wether i click yes or no doesn't matter.
the console says:

Podcatcher: Finished checking for new podcasts. Checking again in 60s.

it only seems to check this single feed. although the global settings say to check hourly. it then tries to download a file from that feed, creating a *.part file, just to tell me in the console:

Podcatcher: Downloading podcast item 'http://www.astrobio.net:80/video/http://traffic.libsyn.com/arewealone/AWA_11-01-24.mp3' to 'file://D:\-= Downloadz =-\Podcasts\NASA Astrobiology Magazine\AWA_11-01-24.mp3'
Podcatcher: Error downloading 'http://www.astrobio.net:80/video/http://traffic.libsyn.com/arewealone/AWA_11-01-24.mp3' (Length of object is unknown)
Location not parsable: "D:\-= Downloadz =-\Podcasts\NASA Astrobiology Magazine\AWA_11-01-24.mp3.part", reason: Unsupported file format

it worked fine for all other episodes from that particular feed.

using 0.2.3 beta.

cheers

EDIT:

looks like i solved the problem.

deleted the feed, closed everything, deleted the *.part file and restarted foobar.
then added the feed again.
suddenly stopped asking about subscribing to the feed every minute. seems like the file in question is a video. it just tried to download it once, didn't work, and then it stopped triying, and therefore stopped bugging me about it.

strange thing though, but looks like it's ok now ;-)

Thanks for the reports. Looks like there are still some issues around downloading and retagging. I'll try and take a look this weekend.

HiRsch: do you have the url of the feed that keeps asking you to subscribe? It might help me debugging the issue.
Title: foo_podcatcher

that would be: http://www.astrobio.net:80/podcast.xml (http://www.astrobio.net:80/podcast.xml)

but as i edited in my last post, after deleting the feed, restarting foobar, and adding it again it stopped. i looked into some of the episodes' links though and think the problem might be there, as some of the late episodes show weird "podcast online" urls.

I have a problem with the context menu of Podcatcher (version 0.2.3), using Foobar 1.1.2.
Under "context menu" in "preferences", Podcatcher has 4 options: download, archive, restore and delete podcast. All of them are enabled.
However, when I right-click on a file in the Podcatcher playlist, the last two options don't appear in the Podcatcher context menu.
Does anybody have any solutions?

Restore and delete only apply to archived casts. So if you archive a cast, go to the Archive playlist, and right click there you should see delete and restore.

Synthetic Soul: Deleting the casts will stop them trying to download if they aren't in the feed anymore.

Speech:

Thanks for your answer and for fixing the bugs I mentioned in two consecutive versions.
Also, as you requested, I sent you a FeedDemon OPML file by a private message.

I was able to follow your suggestion, but unfortunately every podcast producer has their naming rules.  If I want my podcast folder to be easy to understand and not to be a mess, I still have to manually set a download folder for each podcast.  Why can't I just change the title of every individual podcast in the Podcatcher Feed Properties, so that it's not necessary to assign a specific download path to every one of them?

Moreover, there are still illegal characters in v. 0.2.3.  As you may have noticed if you imported my OPML file and set a specific folder for podcasts (take the same name as the "outline text" tag from the OPML file, don't just keep the default download folder), podcasts containing ' or ( will transform into incomplete file names with no folder and no extension!  I consider this a serious bug, since it prevents other podcasts from being downloaded into the same file!

Now that I know better Podcatcher, I agree with you that automatically archiving podcasts would be an interesting option for most users.  Also, automatically deleting podcast files (such as the File Operations plugin does) would another interesting option; I would just delete everything by default and, if I want to keep a podcast (I rarely do), I would just restore it from the Windows Recycle Bin.

Another point I want to make is to be able to just download some podcasts, but not include them in an automatically generated playlist like "Recently downloaded".  For instance, I have some podcasts I always listen to on my Nokia smartphone, so I just want Podcatcher to download them, then I will transfer them on my digital MP3 player.  (In an utopia world, I would better like to synchronize foobar/podcatcher and my Nokia, so that I can send any podcast and also keep the "listened" indicator and keep the last position in a partially listened podcast.  But that would be too much to ask.)

One last thing: when I delete a podcast feed from the list, there are still bits about it still left in the foo_podcatcher.dll.db configuration file.  Is this file condemned to keep all the history and always grow?

I hope everything is clear here, because I put together several ideas in one post.  Hopefully they help you to build a better Podcatcher.  Thanks anyway for what you've done already!

Synthetic Soul: Deleting the casts will stop them trying to download if they aren't in the feed anymore.
That's not my experience.  In fact, to test further I have completely removed the feed now (not re-subscribing as I had unsuccessfully before), and choosing "Update All Podcast Feeds" has still resulted in these download errors!

It's very possible that I'm overlooking something basic, but I just can't see what!

Synthetic Soul: You will need to delete the casts too. They will be in the Orphaned Podcasts 'feed' playlist (but will need to archived before being deleted). I've changed the behaviour in the next version to not try to download archived or orphaned casts, and to allow orphaned casts to be directly deleted.

Speech: Thanks for the OPML file. I haven't been able to reproduce the illegal characted bug though. Could you let me know the exact download path and feed/cast combo that produces it? Thanks.

Speech: Thanks for the OPML file. I haven't been able to reproduce the illegal characted bug though. Could you let me know the exact download path and feed/cast combo that produces it? Thanks.

Well, it's very simple:
1. Take whatever podcast you subscribed to.
2. In the Podcatcher Feed Properties window for this podcast, assign a download path to it (i.e. "D:\My documents\Downloads\Podcasts\This isn't my best podcast (but I still like it)\%filename_ext%" ) (I purposely put the 2 illegal characters I discovered in the folder name.)
3. Watch where your files will be stored (i.e. "D:\My documents\Downloads\Podcasts\This isn" - the latter being a file with no extension, not a folder).

I've just put v0.2.4 up at http://www.unkempt.co.uk/fb2k/foo_podcatcher.html (http://www.unkempt.co.uk/fb2k/foo_podcatcher.html)

This has fixes for some of the bugs that have recently come up including the one where HiRsch's feed kept trying to re-subscribe. (The feed is badly formed so its unique id kept changing.)

Speech: I've realised that as the download paths are processed for tags you need to escape quotes and parentheses. So your example would need to be entered as D:\My documents\Downloads\Podcasts\This isn''t my best podcast '('but I still like it')'\%filename_ext%

Hey, not that it's a big deal or anything, but I think the download rate calculation is off by an order of magnitude. For example, when I'm downloading a podcast, the rate in the status usually bounces between 6kB/s and 13kB/s. Besides my connection being about 100kB/s, there's also the fact that at these rates a 28MB episode would take like 45 minutes or so to download, yet they always finish in about 5 minutes. Just something odd I noticed, and thought I might as well mention.

Thanks for a great plugin BTW; between this and the ipod-synch plugin, I've been able to kick iTunes to the curb completely

Hello everyone,

I updated to the latest version of podcatcher (0.2.4) and foobar (1.1.3). Now I am unable to resume playback of a podcast after switching to another playlist.
With a previous version of podcatcher (0.1.7.4) I was able to resume playback of the podcast. It would not restart the podcast.
To reproduce this issue:
- start playback of a podcast
- during playback (do not stop) choose a track from another playlist (via double mouse click)
- return to the same podcast (via double mouse click)
- the podcast restarts at the beginning instead of resuming playback where you left off.

Could this issue be fixed. For now I have downgraded to version 0.1.7.4.

Greetings,

Ben

Hi.
I'm trying to get a podcast wich is protectet with a username and password.
The feed adress is: http://audio.zeit.de/podcast/zeitaudio_abo.xml (http://audio.zeit.de/podcast/zeitaudio_abo.xml)
I allready tried to ad my username and pw to the adress like this: http://user:password@audio.zeit.de/podcast/zeitaudio_abo.xml (http://user:password@audio.zeit.de/podcast/zeitaudio_abo.xml)

But then I get the following error:

Unable to open item for playback (Authorization Required (401)):

Do I have a chance to catch the podcast using foo_podcatcher?

That URL just returns RSS for me.

There's no authentication required.

Maybe the answer is to move to the UK.

Edit: Sorry, I see, attempting to access an MP3 from that lists results in an authentication request.  The MP3s are on a different subdomain using HTTPS, which is possibly why authenticating yourself on audio.zeit.de does nothing.

Seems only two people other than me has addressed the fact that video podcasts are ignored

So here's from the few of us: It would be great if podcatcher would download these podcasts as well. Of course, fb2k isn't a video player, but there are a couple of good reasons not to reject unknown media as I see it:

* fb2k kicks ass, as does podcatcher, and having to keep a different app open to retrieve video podcasts just seems like cheating on a beautiful wife with an ogre.
* forward compatibility: plugins may provide functionality that we haven't thought of yet, such as video playback (think xmms/winamp). Is the audio restriction really set in stone, or is it just that we don't have a plugin to handle video media? Or will the next version of foobar2000 natively support video?
* some plugins, like the DTS decoder even demuxes DTS from mkvs to play just the audio part. This makes sense for a wealth of video podcasts that are mostly talk anyway, such as debates, tedtalks, etc.

I don't see any reason to not allow the (stupid/courageous) user to add a non-audio podcast. The XML is the same, and the retrieval also. But then ofcourse, I know nothing of the innards of podcatcher. But from one developer to another, here's a big thank you for making this in the first place, and an echo of "please add video podcasts, too... ooooo... ooooo... oooo..."

Cheers,
Daniel

Love the plugin. I can't live without it! :-)

I did have a question, though. I read through the forums, and notice a few people asking about sorting. As of the latest version (0.2.4 beta), sorting does work. However, everytime I select a different podcast feed (or even select the same one from the Feed List), the sorting reverts back to oldest first. Is there any possible way to make it default to sorting by newest first? I scoured the options panel, and didn't come across anything. Also looked to see if there were any column options part of foobar2000 itself and couldn't find anything.

Perhaps there's something I'm missing? In any case, keep up the good work. :-)

I'm having a few problems with saving podcasts.
In the 'Path to store downloaded podcasts (Use Title Formatting)' field I enter the string:
'F:\Jake's Music\Podcasts\%album%\%filename_ext%'

This should correspond to the folder\filename:
F:\Jake's Music\Podcasts\PodcastName\Ep01-foo.mp3

But it is creating the following folder:
F:\Jakes Music\Podcasts\IOT\IOT ep 1 - foo.mp3
For some reason the folder/file creation is ignoring the  '  in F:\Jake's Music\ and creating a whole new branch of folders to store the downloaded files in, starting with F:\Jakes Music\

Is this a simple Title formatting problem or is it a limitation of podcatcher?

Thanks in advance

tl;dr Use ' to prefix characters that are not being parsed e.g F:\Jake's Music should be written F:\Jake''s Music

+1

Seems to be not only when selecting another feed, but each time a new episode starts. It's pretty much impossible to listen to a podcast feed back-to-front.

Also, is it possible to manually tag an episode as "listened"? As it is, I have to let the playhead run out before the status is updated automatically, even if the last minute of the podcast is just jingle music or something that should've been trimmed by the publisher in the first place

Thanks!

This is not the first time i wondered why podcast adresses can't even be copied from foo_podcatcher's properties dialog.

Could you have a look into this?

Hi,

I'm having huge troubles: When podcatcher (0.2.5) tries to update the feed list, foobar (1.1.7) freezes and becomes unresponsive. I subscribed to about 40 podcasts, I guess. It used to work yesterday...

I found two foo_podcatcher.dll-files inside the foobar configuration folder. One is 831kb, the other 29MB. And of course a foo_podcatcher.dll.cfg plus one more foo_podcatcher.dll in the user components folder. Is this normal?

Also, the opml-export still doesn't work. When I type in a file name and click "save", it doesn't save anything. That's why I don't want to delete the podcatcher config and lose all my subscriptions.

Any idea?

Please, for the love of god, make this component be automatically upgradeable from within foobar2000.

Here I was with an old version of foo_podcatcher, which was refusing to properly download some BBC podcasts due to some bugs, and not knowing what was wrong, since I update my components from within foobar2000 regularly. It had never occured to me to go to the official website and upgrade manually, which I now did, and everything's running smoothly.

There's no need for that.

Does anybody know why podcatcher is no longer able to download podcasts from this feed: http://minnesota.publicradio.org/tools/pod...s/top_score.xml (http://minnesota.publicradio.org/tools/podcasts/top_score.xml)
When I try to download it with podcatcher I get a popup saying "Error downloading podcast."

In the console it says:
Podcatcher: Downloading podcast item 'http://download.publicradio.org:80/podcast/minnesota/classical/programs/2011/08/03/top_score_20110803_128.mp3

Maybe the Podcatcher component can't handle the appendix that seems to be added to the mp3 download addresses? Subscribing to the Top Score podcast with Opera, the episode's article says
Quote
Download:
http://download.publicradio.org/podcast/mi...0110803_128.mp3 (http://download.publicradio.org/podcast/minnesota/classical/programs/2011/08/03/top_score_20110803_128.mp3)

After the download from this URL, Opera's Downloads Window however states (appendix = ?_kip_ipx=191366326-1312645280):

Love this component, but having trouble with podcast downloads that are interrupted for whatever reason.  I find that for partially downloaded subscribed podcasts, I am currently restricted to just listening to whatever I caught on the first download attempt.  I cannot find a way to resume or re-download a partial download of a subscribed podcast other than manually going to the podcast website, finding the specific individual partial podcast, and individually downloading that.

I'd love to have a way to have subscribed podcasts recognize that a podcast was not completely downloaded and give me another shot at fixing it.  Any suggestions?  thanks

Is there any way to make the interrupted broken files redownload automatically? I often loose connection to the net and many files do not come in full form, I only find it out when I try to listen to each one and redownloading one by one when discovering it come broken is really the worst option. Thanks for the help!

After trying to download subscribed podcasts for a while, I'd like to request the following enhancements:

- correctly recognize when a download is partial or complete
- upon interruption or erroring of a download before completion, resume download from the point of error or interruption rather than start over
- upon interruption or erroring of any download, proceed to the next item in the queue rather than also erroring out (wiping out) the entire queue
- if wiping out the entire queue upon any download error cannot be avoided, then automatically refresh feeds and create a new queue without having to exit Foobar.

Glad to clarify any of the items above.  Thanks for this component!

Recently every time I start foobar2000, it maxes out the CPU and does so much disk access that my computer practically stops.  I found that it's because of foo_podcatcher.  This problem makes it quite inconvenient to use the program.

I have version 0.2.5, and these days I mostly use foobar2000 for podcasts (not music), so I don't start it up very often.  I have 10 podcast sources added (it sounds like a lot, bust most of them don't update frequently).  I have had this setup for a very long time so there are lots and lots of already downloaded podcasts.

EDIT:  Is podcatcher simply not able to handle this much?  I have now removed those podcasts I don't listen to frequently and removed all but the smallest auto-playlists (in the all-feeds playlists there were ~1400 items, thanks to some frequently updated one-minute podcasts).  Hopefully this'll fix it.

Hi,

As erst of the users I must admit that it's a damn good plugin, my congrats.

Nonetheless I've got one RFC : add an option to edit feed General data, like Author, Title, ... and especially Image and Offline Image.

The reason behind it is because some podcasts do contain an invalid URL to their logo or too long names etc.
like: http://www.ninjatune.net/solidsteel/rss.xml (http://www.ninjatune.net/solidsteel/rss.xml)

Is there any way to contact its creator nausea? Does he responded to anyone anywhere?

It would be wonderful plugin if the problems mentioned in previous questions will be solved, but I have a fear the project is now unfortunately dead and  if so, does anyone knows any alternative way for integrating podcasting with foobar?

Thanks so much

There is one barrier to me switching full time to foobar and this podcatcher app: I need the option to manage my backlog of 'casts. iTunes has the option of setting storage preferences: how long to keep a podcast, how many to keep, and so on. Without that, I'm quickly swamped.

I've been through the backlog of posts and didn't see anyone else asking about this. If I missed something, I'll be glad to hear about it. Thanks.

Foobar properties / Tools / Podcatcher / Time range
or settings for individual feeds:
View menu / Podcatcher Feed Manager - double click on the feed you are interested in changing

I hope this helps; this is all podcatcher has for now.

I think when you set the option for example at 1 month it will download all the podcasts which are published within the last month and when the time goes bye it will delete every podcast which is older than one month.

Just wondering, is it possible to manually add podcasts to a subscribed feed? I have 27GB of podcasts on iTunes, and I don't really want to download them all again. So could I add a feed and get the plugin to scan the folder I set as the download location for already-present episodes?

When you configure your podcatcher you could configure all your podcasts that they would be downloaded exactly to the path were you have them saved allready. Also the filename has to match!
When this circumstances are given foo_podcatcher will ask you if it shall download the file again and replace the old file or just take the old file and import it to your podcasts.

It's a bit complicated and you have to click for every single podcast on "No" when you are asked if it's shall replace the file but you don't have to redownload the files.

Hi, i want to thank you for this plug-in, really makes fb2k powerful, but i have an issue with it. Im using ESPlaylist and i cant download pod-casts, since the Podcatcher context menu is unavailable. Can you fix it or create an optional short-cut for people with custom play-list components?

I've got the same problem while using ESPlaylist. Did you found a solution?!

I've got also another question. I am listening to this podcast: http://distrikt.podomatic.com/ (http://distrikt.podomatic.com/) which I can highly recommend to electro/techno fans. In foobar I add http://distrikt.podomatic.com/rss2.xml (http://distrikt.podomatic.com/rss2.xml) to my podcasts. But there are only the last 15 Podcasts in the feed. The old ones are in this feed: http://distrikt.podomatic.com/archive/rss2.xml (http://distrikt.podomatic.com/archive/rss2.xml)
Since they are both called the same ("Distrikt") They are stored in the same folder. It is possible to join them also in foobar to one?

Greetings

Have you directly observed this behavior, or are you speculating?  I've not observed such behavior, nor would I logically expect such from the description of that setting, which specifically only mentions "downloading".  thanks

Hi everyone. Love the plugin!
I have a feature request of my own, or maybe this is already possible somehow but I simply haven't realized it yet...

Would it be possible to somehow prevent some of the files from a podcast from being downloaded? I have several podcasts I have subscribed to and they sometimes have episodes I'm really not interested in. So would it be possible to exclude them with some kind of filter (E.g. exclude episodes starting with "week in review" or other labels)? People could then maybe also prevent episodes that are too large from being downloaded and so on.

This is a feature that no podcatcher out there seems to have, so maybe this would be another reason for people to switch over to foo_podcatcher... . I have no programming expertise but if this is doable without much effort I would love to see it implemented.

Also as far as I can tell it is so far not possible to sync the downloaded files with an mp3 player, right?

I would like to see the ability to select a number of entries that are downloaded, eg last three episodes, instead of the periodical selector.
An auto-delete function, eg keep last three episodes, would also come in handy.

Yes, apparently this project is dead. Nausea as a developer seems to be gone for good, I hope he is alright and that nothing has happened to him.
I've recently uninstalled foo_podcatcher because of various problems (double/triple entries, huge archive).
I use media monkey now to download & manage my subscriptions & combined with an "Album List" panel in Foobar2000 dedicated for my podcasts.

It would be also very useful if you added a feature of automatic download of all podcasts whose download wasn't finished during the previous run of foobar2k.
One more question: is it possible to create a column in podcatcher's playlist (using syntax commands) that will represent podcast status in playlist, i.e. using %status% command or something like this?

Hey there!
After promoting foo_podcatcher as the most elegant solution and installing it on any student's machine, i have to say today:

What worth is a podcatcher that is not able to receive a .m4a stream?*

For those i'm better off using the browser's HTML5 abilities (and following the podcast clicking the shownotes on the podcast's homepage).
On the other side, foobar fails for my need of connecting with my one and single media player to the emerging streaming services like jamendo or jango, stripping off the unwanted webpage content.
And so foobar as a whole loses a lot of ground these days.

I realize this is likely dead, but I just have to ask this in the off chance it'll ever get picked up again: would you consider making an option to sort the lists in reverse? So the latest podcasts are on top instead of at the bottom on the (usually large) list? It may seem like a small thing, but it makes keeping track of updates (per subscription) so much less of a hassle.

Here's what you can do:

Create autoplaylist with this query pattern:
%path% HAS _Radio_Shows SORT DESCENDING BY "$date(%added%)",SORT BY %title%

"_Radio_Shows" - replace it with your own directory of podcasts.

For %added% - added date -  you need to install Playback Statistics 3.0.2 plugin (if you don't have it already).
