Converting WMA Lossless on Mac.

Okay, came across some WMA Lossless files and I wanted to know how I could convert them to either FLAC, WAV or MP3 (at this point, I'm desperate) on my Mac.

I tried ALL2MP3, which denied the files due to them being WMA9.  Max won't take them.  Nor will XLD.  I read about Switch but I noticed some funny business with their program on Macupdate.com:  Their version 1.52 came out in March 2009 while their version 1.50 came out August 2009.  Also, they have two separate entries for each of the aforementioned versions, which is odd.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

The only application i can think of that should do the job is EasyWma http://www.easywma.com/

Edit: Sorry but that application will not do WMA Lossless.

I did a quick search and  Flip4mac will allow you to play them in Qicktime http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm You should then be able to export the file to any formant Quicktime supports..

Realplayer might be another option http://www.real.com.au/

As far as I know the only WMA Lossless decoder in existence for the Mac is the one in Flip4Mac, although its possible someone else has bought and ported the MS decoder as well.

Can iTunes do it?

I know it will take standard WMA9 files and convert them to whatever - I've never seen/used a WMA Lossless file in my life, so I'm just throwing this out there...

Edit: Well, just for the helluvit, I blew the dust off of Windows Media Slayer on my PC and ripped a couple tracks to WMA, one WMA9, one lossless.

iTunes on my Mac wouldn't import either...I find that kind of odd.  Yeah, I know: "Um, dude, Windows Media on a Mac?", but "switchers" are a pretty big part of Apple's Mac customer base, so I'd think they would want to make it easy for people to bring over their Windows Media libraries.  After all, they've already paid for the decoder in iTunes for Windows...or do they do it through DirectShow?
"Not sure what the question is, but the answer is probably no."

I did use Flip4Mac to play the files but had no idea that it could also export the files to another format.  I'll give this a go.

Thanks.

I agree with you.  It's amazing that this kind of conversion isn't readily available within ITunes.  But, Apple's the same company that still hasn't written code to allow native playback off ogg and flac files, so....

Thanks for giving it a try for posterity.

Just realized that I'll need the "pro" version of quicktime to do the export.  Oh well... It's a shame that, in this day and age, it would be so difficult to use an audio format.  But, WM Lossless never really caught on, so, it's to be expected.

Just as amazing that MS isn't offering ALAC or FLAC support natively? They want to promote their own stuff obviously. Also people using WMA Lossless (of all things) are a very very slim minority even among those who use lossless codecs, so I doubt they would prioritize it too highly if at all.

As far as I am aware, and I have done this (on a Windows computer); drag the file into the iTunes window, and iTunes will offer to convert the file to whatever conversion settings you have iTunes set to. Therefore you could convert WMA lossless to ALAC, or AIF through iTunes.

Hope this works on your MAC!

It seems you missed post #4—which suggests that indeed such conversion is only possible with the Windows version of iTunes.

Try this app http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html make sure you have Flip4Mac installed. I might do what you need it's free too.

This could be another app to try http://www.voxapp.uni.cc/

If you don't have many tracks you could burn them to cd then rip them.

Thanks Billy.  I'll give mpeg streamclip a try.  I tried vox in my search, but, it won't even play the files, so, no converting them.

Thanks again.
