Hi,

will foobar ever support video and audio codecs installed on the system?

audiocodecs (if extracted into proper container) - yes
videocodecs - no

I don't think Foobar should support video. VideoLAN works perfectly well for video's. Adding video support to Foobar would only bloat the program.

Yeah i second MC Escher, imo foobar should stay away from being an all in one media player and just stick to playing music.

Two Q.'s have been raised over&over&over in this forum: One is whether foobar2000 will support video, the other a request for a visual volumcontrol on the very top of the GUI. Both have been answered so often that the threads often ends up beeing closed. Please, please use SEARCH, people!

BTW: The answer to the first Q. is: No, never. foobar2000 are aiming at being the worlds best Win32 AUDIO player. The answer to the second: If it happens, it happens. The request have been duly noticed. Volumecontrol are already easily acessible, it's just not on top of the GUI.

My personal opinions: No video! There are enough mediaplayers.... And volumecontrol via hotkeys are the best implementation, putting a bar on top of the GUI are unnecessary  clutter.

while i dont agree, i wont argue it.  i have no problem firing up a video player when i want to watch vidz, but, i do wish foobar supported at least the sound from videos.

It already does for MP4s, Oggs and WMV files. Somebody would just have to write a parser/demuxer for AVIs and you'd be fine.

The fine thing on foobar: everything is unitized.
So if oneday there's somebody beckon with his video-plugin (if this is possible at all), you can decide to use that component or not.
For that you will never have a bloat and won't have uneccessary stuff you still don't want - pretty forward isn't it ? *shakin' and clapin' applause for peter*

No, it's not possible.

Implementing video would require far deeper changes than "just writing a plugin". And as it is foobar2000 you wouldn't  just have it implemented in any sloppy way. You would expect it to be good, too. And then that part would also require maintainance for future releases. Furthermore: Last time Peter himself bothered to answer this Q, he was rather clear. He said: No. And he said: Never.
This is a useless thread.

i thought fubar was all about being able to customize it, so if someone makes a video component, all the people who want videos, can get that component. If you dont want video, don't get it.

Video is actually quite impossible with the current core design. At the very least, the video implementation would need to use a visualization service to account for the audio lag and display frames at the correct time relative to the playing file. This probably wouldn't work too well anyway, as vis components are not told how lagged the audio output is. They only specify how lagged they want the audio. Typically, this is 0 lag, so vis receives chunks of audio "as you hear it." They could also specify negative lag to receive audio slightly ahead of that point, possibly if their processing takes a specific amount of time, to account for their own lag.

So, no, video won't really be possible with the current core system, unless said visualization component compares raw audio data with the current video input instance to determine lag, which is prone to all sorts of errors.

Wow thanks for the explanation kode54.

speaking of not having video support, what about making a plugin that uses foobar to organize video lists, then launches an external program (like media player classic) to play them?

Yeah, but as Kode says there's  deep changes and tradeoffs required to support video in the core. Right at the start of the project it was decided to optimise the api for pcm style music playback, adding video support properly would be either a fudge or it'd degrade the rest of the foobar 'experience'

I understand why some people would like to play the sound from an .avi or whatever, but just do as I do with concert vids - play it in the background

It's not like you need a lot of other software to play most avi files - a recent ffdshow alpha with media player classic and the real/quicktime parsers and you're set to play anything you can download.

What the heck's that?

Why would anyone want video playback in Foobar anyway? If I want to listen to music I don't want Foobar to take up 30MB more system memory just cause someone else wants to watch porn. Get a dang video player, is it really that difficult?

Porn?

I'm video editor and 3d animator and I'm playing video more often than music.

I would like to play videos with foobar also but if it will make foobar slower or something... I can live without video support.
