Title: Lossless Compression Test
Post by: skamp on 2012-10-04 10:54:51
My conclusion is that no codec makes a significant enough difference in terms of compression, relative to other codecs. All are within a few percents of each other.
I'm guessing that compression speed is also good enough with most codecs. Decompression speed might be a significant enough factor for portable players, but hardware and software support is probably the number 1 criterium when deciding what to use (IMHO).

I'd agree with skamp. There's a saving of 10GB between FLAC -8 and LA-HIGH which is nothing. I think it comes down to whether you're using older hardware or not as encoding speed even at these levels is a fraction of ripping time too.

I'll stick with FLAC

Compression ratios differences are not important anymore. For me decoding speed is very important in which FLAC excelled years ago, a pitty this isn't included in the test. Now I'm too lazy to convert to an other more speedy decoder format.

If you're so inclined, it would be a great metric to add to your stats if you timed how long each codec takes to compress your entire library, then how long it takes to decompress it all. In order to demonstrate the differences in the algorithm you should restrict all encoders and decoders to using a single cpu core for the main test. That will demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithms. You could then redo the test without imposing core usage restrictions on the encoders which would show where the reference implementations for each codec benefit from multithreading.

These would be really important numbers to factor into the utility of a particular codec. For example, optimfrog compresses a couple percent better than FLAC -8, but if it takes 3 times as long to compress, and twice as long to decode, it may put the advantage in FLAC's corner, or vice-versa.

Not my entire library, but... http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....st&p=800186 (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=95670&view=findpost&p=800186)

More or less the same.

eight times.

I'm guessing that compression speed is also good enough with most codecs.

The last time I checked, the top 3 (compression-wise) of this test were actually close to unusable because of their decoding complexity. I'm also happy with FLAC -8, but TAK is the efficiency winner in my eyes.

You shouldn't be: http://synthetic-soul.co.uk/comparison/los...sion&Desc=0 (http://synthetic-soul.co.uk/comparison/lossless/index.asp?Sort=Compression&Desc=0) Have a look at speeds.

What impresses so much about TAK is its overall speed/compression performance. Compared to the more insane froggies and monkeys, it sacrifices merely an epsilon compression and still offers FLAC competition at speed.

Every time I try to decode 2 or more La files simultaneously with foobar2000, it crashes. I suspect that la-core.dll isn't really thread safe.

Thanks for the test.

I think lossless is close to its theoretical maximum in its current form (i.e. not using heavily multi-threaded implementations on supercomputers and CL/CUDA). Encode and decode speed really is the issue, other than device/platform compatibility.

I also would have thought TAK -p4m might have been worth testing since Monkey's -c5 and LA -high were run. But with CD audio it is easy to predict the difference in ratio between -p4 and -p4m from other benchmarks.

Best part is- any lossless is a winner (from the quality perspective).

You skipped my favourites.
WavPack -hhx6
OptimFrog --mode bestnew --optimize best --experimental

Your result is really unfair wrt ofr, with all others you test stronger modes but here you skip them, making it appear like it's not the strongest codec out there. It probably is (though sac and la win in some comparisons).
In result you have people thinking that mac is stronger than ofr...very, very wrong.

Out of curiosity, what encoding speed do you make of -hhx6?

Ok i'll do a run of TAK -p4m and WavPack -hhx6.

I'll try to expand on the OptimFrog settings but I don't really want to spend another week or 2 running encodes.

@MODs
how would I go about updating the original post with the updated graphs and data?

I suspect that -hhx6 is ~50x slower than -hh.

That sounds like you mean “its practical maximum”, which would be much closer to the truth.
Title: Lossless Compression Test
Post by: Destroid on 2012-10-05 01:10:18
Err, yeah. I guess the understanding was there even if my proofreading was not.

I guess the theoretical maximum could be at least 10-20% higher, but that would probably involve adaptive-predictors of another nature (taking 500x longer to encode) and the decompression would probably use 50x more processing cycles. This is not really based on any real numbers but maybe an estimate.

The point was these lossless compression programs do very well to reduce file size without taking a month to process a file 300 seconds duration. I like bench results, it's very discussion-worthy.

Great work for the comparison among latest codecs. Waiting for the -p4m tests, which I prefer in most cases.

Only for my own curiosity, is there any comparison measuring robustness of efficiency among different lossless codecs?

For example, assuming we put all the audio files into 10 categories, and compare two lossless codecs. The overal compression ratio of codec A is slightly better than codec B, but it is only slightly advanced in 8 categories, while significantly worse in last 2 categories. And codec B gives more stable results for all 10 categories. If the overal difference is not large, I personally prefer codec B, as I don't want to use codec A only for those 8 categories and switch to codec B for the last 2, because sometimes it takes too much time to separate all the audio files into different categories, and it looks strange to me if I have some audio files in different codecs in the same folder.

This may be measured in many ways, such as ranking standard deviation of compression ratio, or standard deviation of differences in compression ratio between one codec and the best result for each file. Or maybe many other better methods can be used. I wonder is there any work done for this?

Title: Lossless Compression Test
Post by: Porcus on 2012-10-05 08:52:30

I suppose that in practice, users just want their music collection to fit on your old 2TB drive rather than having to buy a new 3TB drive, right? (And all the other features of a modern lossless, like tagging capabilities.)

But for developers it could certainly be interesting: are there types of signal which are suboptimally processed simply because you never tested with that music? I've reported a Merzbow album where TAK -p4m at the worst track produces a larger file than uncompressed WAV. (That's the least FLACable track in my collection, and TAK came out really bad.) On the other end, I picked the most FLAC-compressable album and here TAK outshines WavPack extra high by far.

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....st&p=809489 (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=96976&view=findpost&p=809489)

and it looks strange to me if I have some audio files in different codecs in the same folder.

So I reckon that if you buy a single bonus track in a lossy format, it does not go into the folder with the main album?  Neither with me. (By the way, I use a 2nd lossless to distinguish those CDs which came with pre-emphasis. As I don't convert them, merely tag them (and decode on-the-fly), I want to be insured against accidentally deleting tags.)

Ah, you can use your computer in the meantime, as you are not measuring encoding speed, you lazy cheater

Yikes! A compression increase of 33% above the average of these codecs' results? (BTW, I should have clarified in my guesstimate of of 10-20% increase in theoretical compression was based on the average of norm of 65%.)

I guess I'm not too busy to pass up cryogenic freezing of myself.  Whether it is from from the most rigorous brute-force compression of existing tech or waiting for the next lossless tech is another question.

Which obviously brings back the encode/decode efficiency factor. I see potential in both high efficiency and high compression- it just depends how often the material is accessed. Frequent access would benefit from a balance while long-term archival would likely aim for lowest storage footprint. One-codec-for-all is pretty tough to suit all areas of lossless criteria, but if it did exist today it would most likely be WavPack. Frequent access I give to FLAC and TAK. Infrequent access archival would be for OFR bestnew and Monkey's extra-high/insane (and maybe LA). And this is mostly in regards CD audio and Windows platform, there are many other factors.

In conclusion, my rambling was to concur about the time/efficiency benchmarks being a major component for lossless audio comparisons.

Let's not forget the plus one for the pot... hem for the backup: I always sum twice (at least) the space when think about my laburiously ripped lossless collection and still cloud storage services aren't a feasible alternative to doubling physical disks.

I'd agree with skamp. There's a saving of 10GB between FLAC -8 and LA-HIGH which is nothing. I think it comes down to whether you're using older hardware or not as encoding speed even at these levels is a fraction of ripping time too.

I'll stick with FLAC

Actually the difference is 9GB and between LA -HIGH and FLAC -5 and 8.33GB between LA -HIGH and FLAC -8. Considering the speed between -8 and -5 I'll stick with -5.

Apple did a good thing with ALAC, it didn't create confusion. They compared different algorithms, speeds and codecs and left only one for the user. I am sure whoever uses ALAC got over the headache of which "compression" to use, just to save few MBs, the first day.

Precisely. There's a “what's your compression ratio?” thread at http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....showtopic=97125 (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=97125) . My FLACs clock in at slightly above 900.
While space certainly was more of an issue at the time when you had to build a computer which had enough space and mobo for the drives (anyone who needs an IDE card or two?), it kinda still is: even if I were to buy drives now, I would save me a couple of hundred dollars from audio compression, plus the video part of the DVDs.

WavPack -hhx6

Out of curiosity, what encoding speed do you make of -hhx6?

Frankly, I don't know, it's so fast that I don't care.
Though it should be noted that I used strong ofr settings as my default before.

I actually use flac -8 because even at that setting encoding is still so much faster than my cd drive can read that it doesn't matter. Also, encoding is something I only do one time so even IF it made a difference (within reason) I'd still use -8. Decoding speed and efficiency are the big issues.

Lots of people around here seem to be interested in turning on all the slowest brute-force options. But you're not using anywhere near enough brute force here! Clearly, since you aren't looking at encode or decode time, the right thing to do is run a program that, using an enumeration of all Turing machines, simulates more and more of them for increasing periods of time, checking whether the TM halted with the entirety of your music collection in its output. The compressed format of your music is then just a description of the shortest TM you discover that does that.*

Since a significant amount of data in your lossless files is below the instantaneous noise floor and therefore effectively random, doing this may still not give you tremendous savings over FLAC. (If FLAC compresses to 50% and 1/4 of the bits of the original are effectively random noise, it's entirely impossible for any lossless compressor, no matter how miraculous, to beat FLAC by a factor of 2; this is kinda like Amdahl's Law, with "incompressible part" taking the place of "nonparallelizable part.")

Also, of course, decode time might be rather long and encode time is likely to be many times longer than the lifespan of the universe. But hey, you saved a few gigs! Surely that's worth it!

*See wikipedia's article on Kolmogorov complexity (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolmogorov_complexity). Note that even then you are unlikely to be able to guarantee you've come up with the shortest description, since some shorter TMs which seem like they're not going to halt could eventually output your music collection and halt. To prove you've got the shortest you would have to prove that all shorter programs either halt without reproducing your music collection or never halt, and the halting problem is in general uncomputable.

I see only one contributor to this thread to whom your above statements apply. I, for example, don't consider FLAC -8 a brute-force option - if it were, it would try to find e.g. the optimal LPC order via brute-force... which it doesn't. And I completely agree with yourlord.

Obviously not near in terms of result either. If we were, then we could decode a 48 kb/s lossy to PCM, and then use the lossless to recompress it to 48 or less.

How do you measure the noise floor?
Because I suspect you don't and if you don't - the quote above is rubbish.

Lots of people around here seem to be interested in turning on all the slowest brute-force options.

I partially agree with this...partially because testing codec speed is something that anybody can do easily. It's imperfect, but much faster than large scale tests.

Personally I don't care too much if encoding time gets longer for insane settings, as long as the speed is still acceptable, like flac's -8 or takc's -p4m. But if it gets too crazy like WavPack's -hh -x6, or the decoding speed reduced to a too costly rate, like falling from 15x to 3x, I would like to avoid those settings.

On the topic of insane settings, I found flake -12 (r264 ,SVN version) to be the best CPU-based flac encoder I came across compression wise.

I wouldn't expect the size reduction to be relevant compared to -8. But in such a big collection, and with very small differences between various codecs, who knows?

Interesting comparison.

During 2003 the prices of DVD drives and discs have gone down. People have moved to FLAC from Monkey Audio. Before that people cared about each MB when CD had only 700 MB.

libFlake and FlaCuda are tuned differently, so libFlake -5 might in fact compress better than libFLAC -8. They also support additional compression levels 9-11, however their use is not recommended, because those levels produce so called non-subset files, which might not be supported by certain e.g. hardware implementations.

Like here http://www.synthetic-soul.co.uk/comparison...sion&Desc=0 (http://www.synthetic-soul.co.uk/comparison/lossless/index.asp?Sort=Compression&Desc=0)

Just wanted to mention my experience with lossless files on disc usually the max speed of the CD/DVD drive is the limiting factor. To clarify, when converting files made with TAK -p4m from CD/DVD to LAME MP3 the CPU is not hitting 100%.

I agree that I would spend the extra time spent on the encode side for some savings as long as decode speed is not terribly affected, but I doubt I would notice any decoding speed difference between TAK -p4m and FLAC -0 with files on a disc.

Although if you're into purism, -high -noseek will squeeze out another few bytes by sacrificing seekability.  Which for .la files is worth doing, since the format, if anything, is good for archiving, without the immediate need for playability (i.e. fast decoding).  The latter is what you'd be using FLAC, TAK, ALAC of WavPack for.

Not by a big margin AFAICT.
FLAC decoding is fast enough to the point where other factors (like I/O in bad storage devices) might be more relevant.

Decoding support and maybe streamability are real issues with non-subset files. Decoding speed(when the support is there) is not!

No, they both play in real time, which is exactly the same either way. And I certainly don't want my music to play any faster.

Just a reminder to flake. It does much worse as regular flac or Chudovs CUEtools encoders on things that are lossywav´d or music that don´t use all bits.

I do. (not to play but to decode much faster than realtime).

Thanks 2012

Does anybody know of a Win32 build of Flake SVN-r264?

What about bringing http://encode.ru/threads/1137-Sac-(State-o...dio-Compression (http://encode.ru/threads/1137-Sac-(State-of-the-Art)-Lossless-Audio-Compression) into the lot?
Not because I think it is worth using, just because it is kinda boring to see the same rankings as last year over again. (And because I'm curious whether how big a mouthful he's trying to chew with that name.)

I have no problems adding that in, the Wavpack --hhx6 is going soo slow anyhow.

how crazy do i need to go on the switches?

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....showtopic=97389 (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=97389)

Compiled with MSVS 2010 (so it requires at least WinXP)

I guess its the larger frame size that breaks flake -11 in rockbox.  If it fits in memory on most targets, I'll see about adding support for -11.  If not, well I guess its not a big deal since compression is almost no better and its an optional feature.

Thanks lvqcl for the binary

UPDATE:
OptimFrog has 3 more presets to go, Highnew, extranew and Bestnew
Flake v0.11 has 2 more left, 11 and 12 (I might as well let it finish and compare)
Wavpack -hhx6 has only just got to Faith No More
Sac is the possibly the slowest encoder i have ever seen (2:57 to encode a 4:04 track in fast mode). I'll do my best to put at least one mode in there but if i get a powercut I'll have to axe it.

I'll start the SVN-r264 Flake once Flake v0.11 is finished.

Try wavpack -hhx4 its twice as fast but compresses like x6 in nearly all situations.

Post by: Destroid on 2012-10-11 02:52:47
I confirm the above from my own results on subset of files (32bit float, mono and stereo)- over twice as fast encoding speed with only 0.10% - 0.30% file size increase. YMMV.

Similar to what I mentioned about TAK (-p4 vs. -p4m), the difference in ratio between WavPack -hhx4 and -hhx6 can be estimated fairly easily. Is worth the time? Maybe for testing the extreme limits of compression ratio and archival but not much for practical use.

A_Man_Eating_Duck,

Maybe it's obvious but what is a goal of your test?  The evaluation of compression of lossless formats mainly on rock music?

Most likely 8047 files is an overkill.  Just a give a number, ~10% of that  amount is already representative and You won't lose precision of the results.

Other thing is that compression varies per music style among other factors. Probably You already know that and I mention it to get it clear just in case.

@IgorC,
I just want to know how different lossless codecs compress my music, nothing more, nothing less.

My results won't change me from using FLAC -6, I'm just curious.

PS: i just realized i can't even play .la files in my foobar2000!!!
Where should i take the right input .la component?

This is a bit late but Peter released a generic command line decoder input for foobar2000. It allows you to use any codec for playback that has command line Windows binaries available. You can find the component and pre-made config for .LA files here (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=97414). With this component the player won't crash.

BTW, I noticed that ALAC (at least Apple implementation) is ridiculously poor at compressing files with several bits at LSB side are all zero (such that created just by up-scaling the bit depth from 16 to 24 or something).

24 bit ALAC files store the bottom 8 bits uncompressed, which is as non-optimal as it gets for those cases.

No, but decoding faster also means it requires less CPU power.  That's much more important on battery-powered devices (like a portable music player) than on your multi-GHz, multi-core, plugged-in desktop or HTPC.

May I ask what kind of use do you have that makes you decode you files frequently and not encode them back? (because if you did encode, I guess you would ignore tiny decoding differences)

2 A_Man_Eating_Duck:
If you thing sac is slow, try ofr --maximumcompression.

2 Ardax:
My music collection doesn't fit on my portable players, so using lossy codec there is a pure win for me.

1) Verifying old rips with AcccurateRip/CueTools databases.

2) Some time ago foobar2000 changed its ReplayGain algorithm so I decided to rescan all tracks in my library. It took several hours, and it would take several days with LA or Monkey's Audio -insane or OFR highest settings.

3) I do encode them (to lossy formats for my portable player). Typical lossy compression speed is 30...50x realtime. Let's suppose it is 40x.
FLAC decoding speed is ~500x. Transcoding from FLAC to lossy: 1/(1/500 + 1/40) = 37x realtime.
LA -high decoding speed is ~12x. Transcoding from LA to lossy: 1/(1/12 + 1/40) = 9x realtime.

37x vs. 9x is not a difference that can be ignored.

Could you say more?
I wonder why don't you encode to lossless and lossy formats at the same time. It's simpler and 10% faster than with FLAC (assuming your disk can do 500x realtime).
Also, if you can't for some reason, do you do it over and over or just once? Because if you do it once, I think you should add lossless encoding speed to the calculations.

I wonder why bother adding Optimfrog or settings like wavpack --xx6² at all. In the last ripping poll we had exactly one person that admitted using Optimfrog. Wonder who this was!?

I rip to lossless (FLAC) and then encode to lossy as needed when I add files to a portable device. I don't encode to lossy in addition to lossless while ripping as I don't need to waste the space on my drive with a lossy version of everything. On the LAN I play only lossless. The only use I have for lossy is on storage limited portable devices. Some only support mp3, so I transcode my library to mp3 when I load that device. Others support Ogg Vorbis, which I prefer over mp3 so on those I transcode to Ogg Vorbis. Most of my portable devices support Vorbis, so that's usually what I transcode to. The only device I or any of my family own that doesn't support Vorbis is the stereo in my truck. It only supports mp3 so I transcoded to mp3 for that one.

Ok thats it, no more. I managed to get a power cut with the SAC encode so i have axed it from the test. I'll ask a mod to C&P from this post in to the 1st post.

:-/  There went the news value. Not that anyone would actually use the thing though.

@Wombat:
I don't remember really, but I think it was sb. else.
2 A_Man_Eating_Duck:
Nice. Frankly, I didn't believe you would have the patience to finish the test.
Respect.

Yes, much work such things are, so thanks duck eater. Now i only miss CUEtools FlacCL/libflake -8 (higher levels are not completely integrated) and CUEtools libALAC at highest level

First, big thanks to A_Man_Eating_Duck for running this test.

Admittedly, though, I'd weigh-in speed benchmarks but these results show the overall compression power. Since many of these CD's do not compress as well as other music (i.e. classical and jazz) the results could be regarded as the lesser expectation of size reduction by the encoders (but obviously not the worst cases).

I wonder why bother adding Optimfrog or settings like wavpack --xx6² at all.

I respect that OptimFrog has extremely good compression and 32-bit float support. Kudos to Florian.

I also wanted to retract a statement I made in my previous post that WavPack -hhx6 was seemingly not for "practical use." My reference was regarding files frequently accessed/decompressed. I overlooked that -x# modes in WavPack do not have additional decompression penalties beyond -hh (i.e. my old Athlon64 3000+ decodes files -hh thru -hhx6 at 45x stereo, 70x-100x mono [44KHz 32-bit float]). Apologies to all (especially David)!

P.S. l ran tests on WavPack vs. OFR ratio and encode/decode speeds but I omitted the results here since the files are 32-bit float (44KHz) and maybe not relevant to this thread.

Ok thats it, no more. I managed to get a power cut with the SAC encode so i have axed it from the test.

:-/  There went the news value. Not that anyone would actually use the thing though.

I apologize for the lack of news for you.....but wait what's this?

.

I won't add this to the graphs though since my trial version of office 2010 expired.

Your vigilance is admirable  especially since I didn't really see the point in a format with nearly zero external support. Perhaps it will be more interesting than anticipated.

By the way, have you any deductions or observations you would like to share by your experience for having run this experiment? Such as: any codecs you found appreciable, convenient, or more interesting since starting this?

And did I say "thanks" yet?

No apologies needed! I did see that post of yours, but since you didn’t specifically say that -x6 made the decode slower, I left it alone (but I wondered if you thought that).

The non-x modes are tuned for regular music audio so there’s usually not much improvement (like in this test), but in some cases it can make a big difference, and I believe that it makes WavPack the only lossless compressor that can be classed as both symmetrical and asymmetrical (I don’t know enough about TAK encoding to know if it is as well).

Also, many thanks to A_Man_Eating_Duck for running this test and including WavPack (and -hhx6!)...we should all chip in to help with his electric bill!

OptimFrog is also both symmetric and asymmetric because of --optimize and --maximumcompression switches.
TAK is always asymmetric.

True enough.

Other observations in my (stereo float) test were: WavPack -hh was slightly less reduction compared to OptimFrog (OFF) normal; WavPack -hhx3 reduced the same as OFF normal; and WavPack -hhx4 thru -hhx6 reduced progressively (if slightly) better than OFF normal.

Of course, OFF --high easily beats WavPack -hhx6, but the difference was WavPack -hh thru -hhx6 decompressed over twice as fast as OFF normal (45x vs. 20x), and three times faster than OFF --high (14x). Hence, my retraction for confusing WavPack -x modes having decompression speed penalties.

I might try --optimize modes but probably using --fast and --normal, at least, for the system I ran my test as higher modes decompress too slow for my preference.
Note: OFF --bestnew encoded at 1.47x and decoded at 2.18x (OFF doesn't have -maximumcompression option). I'm not sure if OFF --bestnew triggers any --optimize switches.

Will SAC have atrocious decompression speeds? My gut feeling is "yes."

ofr 4.910b does have  a --maximumcompression switch. If you use an older version, I recommend that you make a switch as this one is stronger in all modes that I tried.
Mode and optimize are independent options, I think entirely orthogonal.
You may try --fast --optimize best --experimental. Despite the name, --experimental is probably as solid as any codecs out there. I did verify it's decompression for my use and I recommend it to others too, but I never found a problem...of codecs that I used a lot only TAK and wavpack were as good.

And your feelings about sac are absolutely correct, it decompresses extremely slowly.

Thanks for the info _m²_. I think I will try the --optimize --experimental switch combinations, although I will probably have to begin a new test since I read that the latter switch was helpful in reducing CD material. The testing I conducted and reported about consisted mostly of mono files.

I was using v4.910b, the difference being OFR has --maximumcompression but OFF does not, nor does OFF have the --experimental switch.

In short- after the start of this thread I had been working on a CoolEdit project and was curious about OptimFrog float (I used WavPack for float mostly for its FLT plug-in). Although not necessarily in-line with the OP's aims, it does qualify as a "lossless compression test," so I decided to include the results below for those interested (maybe David would be  ).

Your information is very useful to me, because I will start a project to dump Saturn/PS1/Mega-CD games, and wavpack is the codec I have selected to compress the audio part of those discs, mainly due to wavpack accept raw PCM audio files as input in a easy way, no exotic command lines nor adding a RIFF header required. I had many doubts about the -hhxn mode I would run, but now I will -hh, because -hhxn takes a lot of extra time, and ratio is very slightly better, but that ratio isn't worth the extra time required to encode.

Sac --fast is done. it encoded at about x1.5 so it's pretty much unusable.

If the higher modes of SAC scale similarly to other encoders it might be the compression winner, except maybe OFR's extended switches. However it seems much to slow in its current state and severely lacks third-party support to recommend using it.

BTW, anyone: what is the “slowest codec/setting in use”?

I am not sure who uses OFR's highest settings, but I do not see the point in using any setting higher than default/normal (and maybe --high on a fast machine). I would tend to look towards WavPack -hh / -hhx# (or TAK -p3 thru -p4m) based on the two criteria of filesize reduction vs. decompression performance.

My test results are based on a studio tracks and mixes, of which the material tends to favor all lossless codecs (similar to first pressings of CD's prior to the 1990's). I am not too familiar with the format and music content of those game discs (I have a sneaking hunch it might not be Redbook CD format) but I think trying different modes (like -h or the default setting) may be worthwhile given the additional encoding time for relatively small gains.

ofr --maximumcompression was far too slow for my Pentium 4, so I settled on bestnew, optimize best, experimental. I have lots of it now, I intend to recompress it to wavpack (hhx6), but I don't have time for it.
