Best for compressing source .wav's

I've searched around a bit and didn't see anything addressing this topic, hope i didn't miss it.

After reading a lot about cd-ripping and such, I am wondering if perhaps the method for getting the best soundquality out of a mastered sourcefile(24bit 96khz) might be slightly different?  Up until now i have been altering between Fraunhoffer and an old version of LAME(via the SCMPX frontend).  All of my equipment is 24bit capable(maudio Audiophile 2496, Sherwood-Newcastle r396 a/v receiver).
