Winamp2.81 can't play wma9 files (voice codec)

Hi guys, happy new year.

How to play wma9 files (created by wma9 voice codec) with Winamp 2.81?

thanks a lot

WMA9 seems to be a generic name for many codecs, including lossless, voice and pro (stereo & multichannel) variants.

Winamp can't play lossless, voice apparently, and 'pro' mode. Cooledit makes a fatal error when I try to open one of these non-standard encodings.

Wma9 is backwards compatible, but only in normal mode (wma VBR playback seems to work fine, even on hardware players)
Wavpack Hybrid: one encoder, one encoding for all scenarios
WavPack -c4.5hx6 (44100Hz & 48000Hz) ≈ 390 kbps + correction file
WavPack -c4hx6 (96000Hz) ≈ 768 kbps + correction file
WavPack -h (SACD & DSD) ≈ 2400 kbps at 2.8224 MHz

"Aren't wma backwards compatible?"

You're half right.  WMA is certainly backwards, but not compatible.

Ah ok, thanks.

But.........

wma9 "voice codec" and wma9 "lossless codec" files works fine with (my softw. config.: Windows98SE + wma9 system codecs):

CoolEditPro2, SoundForge6, dBpowerAMP.
----------------------------------------------------

MediaPlayer6.4, Winamp2.x/3.x, 1by1, CoolPlayer, etc., fails

Thanks

Interesting, did you test this with a hardware player perhaps? I wasn't sure if I should recommend WMA9 to someone at www.mp3pro.com who specifically looked for a good low bitrate solution with his car radio supporting WMA.

I only have a mp3 compatible player. But someone on a french forum tested the wma9 mode (VBR, ABR 2-PASS and CBR modes) of standard codec on a portable 'pen' called Additek, and all worked fine according to this person.

The wma voice-codec isn´t even called wma, it´s acelp.net. It´s not only called different, it´s also a completly different decoder in the DirectShow-graph. Like Vorbis & Speex, both use OGG container, but are completly different.

wma9 voice codec isn't acelp.net codec:

---------------------------
Windows Media Audio 9 Voice
- A unique new hybrid voice and music codec for AM radio-style audio streams over low-bandwidth networks, WMA 9 Voice is designed to do something that no other audio codec does well today: Play back streams that are primarily voice, but feature some music (through advertisements and intro pieces, primarily). Previous to WMA 9, Microsoft shipped the same proprietary voice codec that RealNetworks markets as RealVoice, but WMA 9 Voice offers a 20 percent compression improvement over that technology, and better sound quality. "Today's voice compressors butcher music," Majidimehr said, "And music compressors don't work on voice, s's get lispy, and there is echo." What WMA 9 Voice offers is a tiny 8 Kbps stream with AM-quality audio that sounds great with voice or music. This codec will help AM radio stations and other sources of voice content to get online quickly and cheaply.

and...............wma9 voice codec works very very well for school lessons (20kbps/22050kHz), much better than vorbis.

Better compare wma9 voice with another speech codec : speex.
There are few but impressive samples on the official website : http://www.speex.org/audio/samples/

I tried speex (1.0beta3) two weeks ago, but wma9 voice codec is much better, better than acelp.net also (school lessons are not "plain" voice only, in this environment wma9 voice codec is the best, imho).

Bye.
