7.1 to 5.1 DTS?

Ok.. I am not 100% new to the concepts of DTS and AC3, although I tend to learn everything from the top down  - Macro concepts first to learn to function, then details as needed. So my knowledge base on this is a very strange mix compared to most people. I have a small amount of detailed understanding that most don't typically have and then great big holes where everyone else seems to know exactly what is going on.

I have managed to fairly quickly get a DTS audio CD to play through my x-plosion 7.1 soundcard..  Well.. sort of.. I can get 5.1 DTS cds to play no problem.. Its the 7.1 DTS cds that are not playing..

So.. I fiddled around and found that if I ripped them with dbPowerAmp and then ran them through DTSParser that they work..

Now here is the issue... I had a Pioneer Tivo with a DVD recorder in it.. It had no issue playing back the 7.1 CDs, and they sounded great. Playing these files back now through the soundcard.. the impression I get is that half of the sound is missing from the front speakers. What I suspect.. but am not sure, is that the Center Left and right channels have simply been dropped in the process, or perhaps they are there, and are being ignored, rather then downmixed to the front?

I am really looking primarily to understand exactly WHAT is going on.. and then of course maybe a kindly suggestion on what could be done to fix this.. Perhaps there is tool I can't find, that has a way to downmix a 7.1 file to a 5.1? IF this is even what is going on here.. It sounds like it. The file isn't just quieter in the front, it really sounds like parts are missing altogether.

Thanks for any help

Well I'd thank you all again for the help, had I gotten any.. but regarless.. In order to benefit anyone else who might have been under the impression I was about 7.1 vs. 5.1 ...  the 7.1 recording I had is now playing "proper" through my 5.1 system, and was an issue with the intervideo filter I was using. Nothing to do with the file being 7.1

Hope I at least help someone..
