wanting to create wv files, not wav files

hi bryant,

there is a wavpack_doc and a wavpack

no wavpack.exe, but wavpack is an application type, and when i looked at its properties, it said it was an exe file

so i renamed it, so that it says wavpack_debug

i tried to do just 1 track for testing

it came back with one track ripped, with no sign of errors

so i think it understood wavpack_debug

however, i could not find anything called application data

so i searched the computer for wavpack_log, and it did not come up with anything.

First, you don't mention it, but obviously you have to tell EAC to use wavpack_debug.exe instead of wavpack.exe for this to work.

The log file is called just "wavpack.log" and is found (on my Windows 7 system) in the folder: Local Disc (C:) \ Users \ david \ AppData \ Roaming \ WavPack. If it's not there then search for "wavpack.log" on the whole drive if you have to.

BTW, there's an option in Windows to hide extensions of known file types, which is probably why you did not see the .exe. To change this (if you want), it's at Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization -> Folder Options -> "View" tab (again, on Windows 7).

my windows 7 might be set up a bit differently from yours

i dont have anything called appearance and personalization

folder options is right off the control panel

but i was able to make the view change, and it now shows .exe

the reason i did not mention changing eac, was because i did not change it !!!

i went back to the compression screen and changed it.

i re-ran the rip.

after i get to users/jimmy, there is nothing remotely similar about getting anywhere further along those lines.

so once again, i did a computer search for it, and could not find it.  but it takes me to another screen which is called custom search.  anyways, i tell it to search the whole computer, and it found it.

if i recall, there is some switch that allows one to see hidden files or system files ?  apparently that is turned off, which is why i could not find it before ?

error in tag spec: @C:\Users\Jimmy\AppData\Local\Temp\CPI26E6.tmp.jpg !
total APEv2 tag size exceeds 1 MB !

well, someone mentioned the tag size.  but there is nothing about this tag that would be longer than another disc.

in fact, quite the opposite.  the artist name of andy gibb only takes up 9 characters, etc.

the only thing that i can see that might ring a bell is the cover art.  does eac send it just the tag, like above ?

or does it try to send it the entire picture ?

depending on what the picture is, i am assuming that the actual jpg size might be variable enough, such that some might pass, where others might fail ?

in my case, about 3 failures per about 50, at this point

i clicked on "show hidden files", and then it came up with it.

i went back, and searched for the picture - 1101 kb

i guess this is either bigger than normal in size, or more clear, such that it apparently takes up more room than most of the pics ?

i am guessing that there is nothing i can do about the tag size ?

i would rather have no cover art on a file, than the wrong cover art.

q1) i would like to copy the wavpack.exe file, so that in my folder i can have both a wavpack.exe file, and a wavpack_debug.exe file.  the way i have been copying is to highlight the file, click on the "organize" button, click copy, go to the folder that i want, and click paste.  when i do this with wavpack (and i am guessing any exe file), it immediately asks me if i want to run this program.  i figured i could copy it somewhere else, rename it, and copy the renamed file back, so that i end up with a debug version and the regular version.

q2) once eac has the picture loaded, it keeps it there, even when i take the disc out.  is there a way to tell eac not to use that picture, so that it can ask me if i want to search for one again ?  every once in awhile, i will see 2 pictures of the same cover art.  perhaps one of them takes up less room than the 1 mb allowed ?

Okay, good, we know what the problem is!

In the WavPack documentation there is discussion of the --allow-huge-tags option that was put in so that people could put huge (or multiple) cover art pictures in WavPack files. I think that anything over a few hundred Kbytes is a waste of space (keep in mind that every track is going to have that extra data), but you can use this option to override the 1 MB limit (but make sure the resulting files will work correctly with whatever to plan to use them for). Of course, you should be able to either get smaller images or reduce them yourself (I usually get mine from Amazon, and I never see huge ones).

One other thing to find is something in EAC called "report errors from external compressor" or something like that. If you have that selected then at least you'll be told by EAC when WavPack returns an error (rather than just having to notice that your files are WAVs).

check for external programs return code

this sounds fairly close to what you said, so i checked it.

i was thinking the same thing before i read your post - am i gonna get this picture in every track ?  it sure sounded like i was.

so far, foobar and vlc are both able to play the wvs.

but i need to do some thinking - my main goal is to get the MUSIC on disc in a compressed form.

as i look at one folder, i see the songs range from 25,000 to 30,000 kb.  so i guess that another 1,000 isnt too bad.

i just tested it - i did get a warning - it would not let me cut and paste - but it basically printed up the tags.  so i am leaving that checked.

Maybe he took 600dpi scans of everything? I tried doing a web save to JPEG High Quality in Photoshop CC 2014, and I only got a size as big as that when trying to save the original images. I reduced all of the artwork so the smallest attribute was 512 pixels, then cropped off the pixel or two that overflowed on the larger dimension, then saved to JPEG High from the web save dialog. This resulted in every image being between 80 and 110 kB. I then embedded them all, because it made very little difference over lossless encoding.

I also kept a log of the AccurateRip hashes from the encode, because it isn't in the AccurateRip database to begin with, what with being a limited release direct from the artists. It even came signed by all of them. I'd probably be stupid to ask if anyone else has a copy just so we can collaborate and submit it to the AccurateRip database.

hi bryant,

i put in the allow huge tags.  that worked.  i got a wv file with no error messages.

This has everything to do with the third-party metadata you have associated with the CD and nothing to do with the data on the disc itself.

just wanted you to know that i am man enough to admit to being wrong.  the failure of any particular cd had only to do with the size of the picture i was getting - nothing to do with anything on the cd.

any of of them could have passed or failed.

i guess the majority of the pics were small enough that they were not surpassing the size limitation.

hi bryant,

i was able to get both a copy of wavpack and wavpack_debug in my wavpack folder.

i could not copy just 1 exe file.

so i highlighted that one and another one, and it let me copy it to another folder.

i renamed that to the debug option.

then copied them both back !!

momma told me there is more than one way to skin a cat !!  - whatever that means !!

i changed eac back to running just wavpack.  but at least if the program is in the file, it may trigger my memory of how to run wavpack in debug mode, should i need to do so in the future.

i have been noticing the size of the images in these past few discs.

many of them are only about 100kb.

so i definitely want the artwork.

i guess on a few i will have a lot more pixels and clarity.
