Thanks, Sveakul. Will try your advice -- contacting my DAC (iFi Pro iDSD) people-- if need be.

Sveakul: sounds like  ASIO and Windows 11 are intractable enemies . Are you recommending that I stick with WASAPI and forget ASIO? How would I do that? (Steps, please.)

I recommend you contact the DAC's support people and tell them you cannot see their device listed in your Windows 11 PC's audio output choices. That needs to be solved first before any ASIO discussion.  Plenty of people use ASIO successfully and it seems more amenable to multi-channel setups.

New Windows USB Driver - v5.57 New
-Windows USB Drivers - v5.57 New and v5.12
https://ifi-audio.com/support/download-hub/

Delete the iFi USB Audio Device Driver.
If the C:\Program Files\iFi folder remains, delete it.
Restart your PC.
Unplug the USB cable and plug it back in.
Install the latest Windows USB Drivers - v5.57.
Once the installation is complete, restart your PC again.
The iFi Audio Device Control Panel should appear in your task tray.
-----
If that doesn't work, try v5.12.
Delete the iFi USB Audio Device Driver.
If the C:\Program Files\iFi folder remains, delete it.
Restart your PC.
Do the same as v5.57.

Ken: I'm getting more than a little confused here. Could you please Reply clarifying the download source for the files I'll need to make my fb2k  64-bit install work with playback of high-resolution files?
With regard to my headphones, I don't do that much listening via cans, so replacing the 701s will have to wait for a while while I absorb the cost of the 'new' (refurbished) T240 laptop. But I'll keep your recommendations on record.
What Ken was referring to initially was the new component foo_input_usdsd, which is designed to replace both foo_input_sacd and foo_dsd_processor.  The new component can be downloaded here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/sacddecoder/files/macOS%20%2BWindows/foo_input_udsd/foo_input_udsd-0.0.3.zip/download.  Its parent folder page on Sourceforge can look confusing because the "Download Latest Version" button on top refers to (and links to) foo_input_sacd instead of foo_input_udsd.

You can stick with the original foo_input_sacd + foo_dsd_processor if you want (as Ken indicated), but to try foo_input_udsd those need to be removed first.  BTW, the actual installation file is INSIDE the zip download--unzip first, then install.  I notice it also adds "Open SA-CD" to the File menu.

There seems to be an "issue" with Windows 11 and players (not just Foobar) being able to find the ASIO drivers (Google "Windows 11 ASIO drivers" to see what I mean).  Unless your DAC supplies its own, normally they are delivered from the motherboard manufacturer either direct from them or via Windows Update.  My Dell XPS-8930 with Windows 10's Realtek ASIO drivers show up just fine in Foobar, but NOT in my Windows 11 Dell XPS-8960.  The ASIO drivers are THERE, they show up in Device Manager and in the system files, but are invisible to Foobar/MusicBee/etc.  While I use Wasapi-exclusive anyway, it still bugs me!

I'm sorry but I can't help with your iFi DAC drivers issue, the best place for that would be the DAC's support site, or you could try Windows 11 Forum.

Sveakul (or Air Ken or anybody!) Would you please let me know how I can become  "Wasapi-exclusive" ? (Steps, please? Starting with where do I find a 64-bit Wasapi component to install into fb2k?). That might be the quickest path to a solution for me.

It's included as standard. Just select it from Output.
Output: Defaluit Device [exclusive] (Standard wasapi exclusive mode)

For DSD playback, use ASIO+DSD support (foo_out_asio+dsd.dll).
Output: ASIO+DSD:  ASIO Driver Select

Thanks, Ken! I'm on my way into my music room to try to do just that right now!

Hey all! As you can see from the attached photo, when I turned on my T240 laptop this morning, suddenly there were more choices under Preferences\Output. When I selected "(Speakers (AMR HD + USB audio) [exclusive]", which I did because I thought it looked right, presto change-o! DSD 256 files started playing just fine! And I never even had to address the Wasapi/Asio or Windows 11 issues!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone on this forum who helped me through two days of misery until this finally got right. I especially include Air Ken and Sveakul for sticking with me.

In case anyone is interested, I'm guessing the reason why there were more choices under fb2k \Preferences\Output when I turned my laptop on this morning is because maybe the updated iFi drivers I installed needed another sistem reboot, or perhaps more time, before they showed up.

In any case I am really happy! Things are working as they ought to! Thank God for this forum!

I'm glad Ken got it sorted out for you, looks like that iFi drivers package was what you needed after all.  It looks like you are indeed using wasapi-exclusive with them (which is built-in to Windows now BTW) due to "[exclusive]" being appended to the drivers name;  good to see that the "where are my ASIO files?" thing never had to be pursued.  Did you end up using foo_input_udsd, or foo_input_sacd?

BTW just to show you "I hear ya" on the ASIO thing, my Foobar 2.2 x64 says "No ASIO drivers found", yet here they are in my W11 Device Manager:

Sveakul: re: Windows 11 problems with ASIO: I'm afraid Microsoft's reputation for "upgrades" that are actually "degrades" (including new releases of operating systems) is now cemented among us audiophiles who use high-resolution-capable player software such as fb2k. But think God it's all working now at least in my rig. And I thank you personally for the excellent help you gave me at a time of year when we all should have been at the beach. GNJ
