Added gapless playback of MP4 files encoded with new iTunes

Great new!
I wonder if iTunes gapless mode can now be considered as a kind of "standard" for gapless AAC. It's supported on iPod, iTunes (reading and encoding) Winamp (reading and encoding (?)) and now foobar2000 (reading only).
I wonder if the AAC gapless tags could be also generated by foobar2000 diskwriter. Are there plans for this?

Does anyone know it what way it has been changed? Is it the way the tags are writen or the tag frames which are being used? If the latter is the case, which tag frames?

By "true random" support, you mean behaviour like the old "Random" setting from 0.8?

I've just installed foobar2000 0.9.4.1 Beta 1 and configured it exactly as foobar2000 0.9.4.

I looked at the Change log but cannot see anything that can explain the genuinely improved sound quality when it comes to playing CDs and MP3s. The audio reproduction was extremely good before, but Beta 1 seems to offer even greater definition and clarity e.g. crisper transients and a generally firmer and more realistic soundstage etc.

An excellent development indeed!

(PS Trust logic and maths but also trust your ears!)

The output from the new beta should be identical to the old version, unless there was a bug at work. Maybe you've lost your DSP/EQ settings? Try installing 0.9.4 and the new Beta alongside each other and comparing them, get a friend to do a blind test, see if you can actually hear a difference.

Hey, let's be kind to newcomers, shall we?

Your ears are not perfect; if you're familiar with psychoacoustics or the anatomy of the ear, your ears are not easy to trust.

It's easy to make mistakes when we deal with audio perception, so that's why we have rules here at Hydrogenaudio (and the foobar2000 forums) such as TOS #8.

Anyway, if you're suddenly delighted with foobar2000's audio quality, I'm sure you'll get the same amount of delight if you listen to a previous version of foobar2000 thinking it's the new version.

It's perfectly normal to feel that way, we're only human.

to be fair, a newer, better version being placebo'd into sounding better by a n00b isn't bad - they can enjoy the sound even knowing it's not real.
err... i'm not using windows any more ;)

Not sure, but you can make them appear in 2 digits in the playlist/trackinfo by using $num(%tracknumber%,2)

Hmm it only happened to MP3s. Fixed it by using ID3v2 instead of APEv2
