Title: Can hybrid mode be used to play a full lossless file, or only convert to lossles
Post by: apastuszak on 2016-12-23 04:58:13
I hope the title make sense.  if I convert a CD to hybrid wavpack, and then load the .vw files into, say foobar2000, will foobar2000 use the .wvc file to play a lossless file, or is the .wvc only used to to recreate the original lossless when converting to ALAC, FLAC or lossless Wavpack (non-hybrid)

Many players, including Foobar2000, will automatically play the correction file to make lossless. So does my winamp plugin and even the DirectShow filter will find and use the correction file with any DS player..

Some players don't handle it, like Rockbox and Gstreamer based playback.

I recently created a pair of test files that let you easily test if a given player is using the correction file. (https://hydrogenaud.io/index.php/topic,113003.0.html)

I'm currently using a Subsonic server to stream music to my phone and other devices.  If I can get it to stream the .vw file and ignore the .vwc, it would save me a good deal of bandwidth while on mobile.

Wavpack hybrid seems like the ideal solution for being able to have a lossy library and a lossless archive without needing to maintain two seperate sets of files, each with their own tags and cover art.

I just keep FLAC and let the Server transcode files on the fly if i need another format. Now with the Müzo Cobblestone and WLAN bandwitdh, i just use FLAC directly.
