Kate Bush - Lionheart.

Except I disliked it the first five times I heard it - then I quickly grew to like it.

7th Son of a 7th Son is however a very good album, although I like No Prayer for the Dying from Iron Maiden better.

Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking

I'm a big Perry Farrell fan.  Most, if not all, of his music is pretty simple and straight forward, but that doesn't mean it can't be beautiful too, which I think it is.  That first major-label album is my favourite though, I can listen to that from start to finish pretty much any time.  I like his Porno For Pyros stuff too, and his solo album from 2002, but that one's the one.  So far anyways. (May or may not have something to do with the fact that the day this came out and I bought it was also the day I dropped acid for the first time and listened to that album over and over all night as I was chauffered around with a bunch of friends.  I think I was 17, I think it was 1988, was a great night, from my perspective anyways, haha)

Bob Dylan, "Highway 61 Revisited".  No question about it.

From the opening Al Kooper organ riff on "Like a Rolling Stone", right through to "Desolation Row", consistently brilliant lyrics and terrific instrumentals, especially Mike Bloomfield's guitar.

When you're lost in the rain in Juarez, when it's Easter time too --
And your gravity fails, and negativity don't pull ya through --
Don't put on any airs when you're down on Rue Morgue Avenue;
They got some hungry women there, and they'll really make a mess out of you....

I can honestly say 'You Had It Coming' by Jeff Beck.

Next week, however, might reveal something much better. But that's a chance I'll have to take.....

'The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper' came close, but I have to go with 'The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness'.

I listened (and still listen) to 'Mellon Collie' much more, and it carries emotional imprints from the point in my life when I was listening to it most. Each song carries a different set of memories, depending on what I was thinking and feeling when I listened to that particular song. In a way, the things you were thinking/feeling/experiencing when you were listening to an album affect your opinion of it more than the album itself.

The songs on 'Mellon Collie' also traversed (and provoked) a variety of moods and emotions from beginning to end. 'X.Y.U', for example, would raise my adrenaline to the point that I felt I could (and wanted to) destroy a city with my bare hands. 'We Only Come Out At Night' (the song immediately following 'X.Y.U') would have an opposite, calming effect. I think that the ability to easily and drastically influence the listener's emotions is the mark of a great album. 'Sgt. Pepper' did the same, but not as effectively as 'Mellon Collie'.

If I must pick just one, Pink Floyd - The Wall. But, any Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Simple Minds plus many others.

Since there seems to be such a liking for Pink Floyd and other stuff of similar age, is everyone as old as I am, or is it just an appreciation of good music?

It's too difficult to answer this, cause the music I hear strongly depends on moods. That's what makes me switch between cradle of filth, marilyn manson or weird al yankovic. Maybe in ten years, wehn I can look back at 15years of music experience I'll be able to choose my own favorite album. Hélas, not now...

Incredible String Band - 5000 Spirits (Layers of the Onion)

An absolute revelation in a time of 'Itsy-Bitsy, Teeny-Weeny, Yellow Polka-Dot Bikinis'

Surprised not to see any Dylan in here, but pleased at the amount of Pink Floyd.

I have no idea. I love too much genres and albums to pick one. Even 5 albums would be hard.

Nevertheless, some of my favourites:

Nargaroth - Herbstleyd
Darkthrone - The united trilogy of A blaze in the northern sky/Under a funeral moon/Transylvanian hunger
Moonblood - Split LP with Deathspell Omega
Burzum - The first 4 albums are all equally good
Tool - Aenima
Pink Floyd - The dark side of the moon
Led Zeppelin - IV
Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphonie Nr. 9 (Karajan/Berliner Philharmoniker)
Richard Wagner - Parsifal (Knappertsbusch/Chor und Orchester der Bayreuther Festspiele, 1951)

If somebody asks me about my favourite bands, Dire Straits and Pink Floyd are always the first two I mention.  I think our tastes of music match very well. (Assuming you like Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Toto, Enya ... also )

I'm not sure what to pick as my absolute favourite. Probably still Dire Straits - On Every Street.

Hmmm... interesting how many fans Pink Floyds have... I've been listening to music from 1967 (I was 12 then  ) but never liked the ones like Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Elton John, Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, Status Quo and a pair of others... till today I don't why. It just happened so.
But always and from the very start I liked Beatles, King Crimson, Yes, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Budgie, Atomic Rooster, ELP, Santana, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Genesis, AC/DC, Uriah Heep, ZZ Top, Rush and many, many others...
I have more than 8000 albums and really don't know, what could be the best. Depends a lot on the mood...

Some of my prefered ones:

Depeche Mode - "Violator"
Pink Floyd - it's difficult to select one... maybe "Pulse" for the great "songs combo" and the live recording...
Metallica - difficult to pick one again... maybe "Black album", the transition...
Placebo - "Without you I'm nothing"
David Bowie - "White tie, black noise"
Autechre - "Garbage EP" (The electronic-abstrabtion-state-of-the-art)
Radiohead - "Kid A"
The Prodigy - "The Fat of the land"
Los Ilegales - "Regreso al sexo quimicamente puro". "Los ilegales" are an spanish rock band, with great great lyrics, the translation of the title of the album is something like "Return to chemical-pure sex"...

There are more... but I think are my prefered ones.
Regards.

Difficult... for Jazz I'd say either:

André Previn plays songs by Vernon Duke
or
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

Rock... not even going to bother making a choice (although Aenima is a good one to make). But Jazz would really have to be my favorite genre, anyway. I've been listening to it my entire life so far and will be for as long as I'm alive.

Underworld - Under The Radar(A very early release of a now influential group. It seems almost no one I have found here in America knows about it. Perhaps I would fare better in the UK.)

Also their album "mmmmmm sky scraper. I love you.". I just love that song "cowgirl" It is sucha deviation from their norm. Still abstract but loud, bouncy, and bleepy. I like to crank that song way up.

And I guess I can't forget Fluke. It was their single "Atom Bomb" that really matured and expanded my tastes from the hard rock, heavy metal, alternative rut I was in. And got me interested in groups like Underworld. That and I love the video for the single. And the game the video came from. I still play wipeout xl/2097 alot.

Is it cheating to claim your favourite album is a various-artists comp? B)

For those who haven't heard it, I would strongly recommend Lenny Kaye's 1972 2-LP compilation, Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968. This was the "album" that began the modern awareness of garage-psychedelia, and it rocks harder than anything the punk or grunge eras ever spawned. (A strong statement, and there are many here who will disagree. This is my opinion.) Best way to get this collection of gems is in the 4-CD box set (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000AFWZ/qid=1058163662/sr=8-4/ref=sr_8_4/103-5108016-8772632?v=glance&s=music&n=507846) from Rhino, as the first disc follows the configuration of the original album, with discs two through four offering a plethora of supplemental material.

Samael - Passage.

Best album of all time? Impossible. People and their music taste do change, after all.

The Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son by Iron Maiden, as mentioned by the topic starter, would probably have made it to the top some other week.

Edit:

Or what the heck, why not all of King Diamond's earlier albums? Or pretty much the entire collected works of Samael.

OK, I'm not metal head (so I'm in the minority here) and I don't mind a bit of Floyd, Beatles, Dylan etc., but I wouldn't say they are my favourites. I do have one of the most eclectic music collections (http://home.iprimus.com.au/jpaarons/music.htm) of anyone I know, so its hard to choose favourites. Taking a selection from different genres here's a randomly ordered and heavily edited list of greatest albums:

Mad Professor vs Massive Attack - No Protection
Kruder & Dorfmeister - The K&D Sessions
Gillian Welch - Time (The Revelator)
Bally Sagoo - Dub Of Asia
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
Mogwai - Come on Die Young
Nitin Sawhney - Prophecy
Phil K - Balance 004
Pitch Black - Electronomicon
PJ Harvey - Dry
The Necks - Aquatic
The Orb - U.F.Orb
The Abyssinians - Satta Massagana

And of course you have to add most of the Trojan, Soul-Jazz, and Blood & Fire catalogues!

As many people say, this is an impossible question. However, I have some albums that strongly affected me at the time, for one thing or another:

Skinny Puppy - Remission & Bites (This really opened my eyes. I've never looked back since)
Massive Attack - Blue Lines (this album is so ground-breaking that I'm still amazed. You must own this album!)
Depeche Mode - Black Celebration (Aged 14 I saw them live for the first time back in '86 when this was released. That was a religious experience which completely changed my life for the better.)
Genocide Organ - Leichenlinie (This opened my eyes even wider when I got it way back in '92. It's shocking!)
Astral Projection - Dancing Galaxy (This was the first CD I got with Astral.. And my God they are fantastic!!!)
Paul Oakenfold - The Goa Mix (I first heard this early '95 on a tape copy from a friend in the UK.. It really changed the way I think of music. Now I have the original DAT master, which makes it even more glorious! SO good!)

.. and I could probably list another 2-300 albums that have meant a lot! There is so much greatness in the world of music..

Scytal3, if you ever make it to Las Vegas, you have to check these guys out www.ybrband.com

Yellow Brick Road is a kickass classic rock cover band, and can play over 30 different bands.  Rush, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd seem to be their favorites, and on the first they are doing a tribute show to Rush.  They really are worth seeing if you ever make it to Sin City.

Tough choices.  Maybe Errol Garner's Concert By The Sea recorded around '54 and a classic festival recording.  He was in his prime and the audience was great, too.  But, Brubeck's Jazz Goes to Junior College is pretty good, too.  I like lots of rock, even PF DSOTM, The Wall, etc., but jazz will always finish first.  Rachmaninoff is way cool; Gould's Goldberg Variations by Bach (both of them) are good.  Where to stop?  Garner.  It is always good.  I have been listening to it for 50 years and still enjoy it.

Santana - Abraxas, where the Samba Pa Ti is even better than Black magic Woman/Gypsy Queen, the Samba lets my gf melt down immediately I put it up
When I 1st played this album, this physical result was quite surprising.

Another ladykiller: Pink Floyds Wish you were here - Shine on you crazy diamond , in the 5.1 DTS-CD version!

Queen - Innuendo is pure pain, art, emotion, Queen at their final eclipse.

Mozart - Eine kleine Nachtmusik , this little piece of music tells everything about music, from calm ballad to poprocky eruptions. If you have this with the overture of Cosi fan tutte, you don't need much else.

Technically best albums are Dire straits , of course, but also Jacques Loussier Trio plays Bach, who combines pure bass, piano & drums with the 1st hard rocker of history = Bach. hm, hard rock, best album Deep purple in Rock, I think.

hmhm, already more than 1 really best

This has got to be one of the Hardest Questions In The Universe To Answer...

For me, it's a three-way tie between...

Physical Graffitti - Led Zeppelin
The Beatles (the white album) - The Beatles
Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd

...with honorable mention going to...

Yessongs - Yes

I base these choices on how many copies of each album I've owned over the years (based on that criteria, I expect that most releases by Primus will be moving up the list...Primus sucks!).

It's always switching between Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco and De-Loused in the Commatorium by The Mars Volta...

Right now it's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

I've gotten really into 5.1 music lately and my favorite out of my limited collection (not my fault they don't release much music to my tastes in surround) has to be Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by The Flaming lips.  It's the most creative and involving use of 5.1 I've ever heard, bar none.  A close second is DJ Play My Blues by Buddy Guy.  The mix on that album is absolutely superb.  He's probably my favorite guitarist too.  I've never heard anyone who's played like him.  Sure, there is no shortage of guitarists who can play faster than him, but they don't make their guitar sound like it's about to catch fire.

Great thread (nicely revived from the dead btw) and a lot of great music mentioned.  However only one album I've ever heard stands above all the others.  And it's hard choice because it's up against some other really great albums. And that album is:

Ayreon - The Human Equation

It's like taking every type of music I love and blending it together into one massive progressive rock/metal opera.  I love it so much.  Not to mention it introduced me to a lot of other bands because their singers participated in it.

Holy crap. I thought no one would mention this one. This has to be, without a doubt, my favorite album as well. It's just so good. Ayreon and Dream Theater are my favorite bands.

Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory by Dream Theater is probably my second favorite album.

I used to listen to all of my CD's in alphabetical order by artist name and then in chronological order by year if they were by the same artist. I didn't deviate from it. No exceptions. Nightwish - Oceanborn, however, is the only album that I broke the chain for when I first heard it and I listened to it about 7 times in a row before going on to the next album.

From early 1959, "Belafonte at Carnegie Hall"  I know most of you on this board aren't old enough to remember 1959, but I was a teenager and I remember.  This was a landmark recording.  The first I ever heard "on location" (outside of studio) recording that actually had good sound.  Heck, it had GREAT sound!  Okay, now I need to find a CD version and see if the magic is still there....

As a lot of people previously said this is just a momentary choice. However I think this is pretty accurate.

Jazz:            Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue
Rock:          King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King
R&B:            Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
Blues:          hard one.. probably B.B. King - Live At The Regal or Robert Cray - Strong Persuader
Classical:      Tchaikovsky - Symphony 6
Electronic:    also hard.. probably The Chemical Brothers - Exit Planet Dust

I'm pleased to see people pick great albums, a lot of Pink Floyd! Happy to see even Maggot Brain among these albums. Too bad people don't listen much to jazz anymore.

Electro: Tricky - Maxinquaye

Tricky's Maxinquaye is not electronica, it's hip hop.....

IMO Trip Hop.

Yeah, and his later efforts would rather be categorized as trip pop, go figure

Led Zeppelin 2. This album defines guitar and drums artistry for me, and encompasses the only blues songs I will ever like. From the frenetic emotional Heartbreaker solo to Bonhams masterpiece Moby Dick, it sets the standard for blues rock for all time. Litterally every song was a hit, and still gets play on 2 of my local radio stations. Ramble on, I mean who didn't like that song, cause you need to be hurt.

Weezer - Weezer

I also love Acclaimed Music (http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/) for their compilation of hundreds of lists and ratings. It's great to see how so many people have rated thousands of albums of decades of time. My only complaint is that I think that the critics ratings are too biased towards "classic" rock. Fortunately they also filter albums by year, decade, etc. Overall it's a really great resource.

If someone said to me you are to be exiled to a remote island, where you will have plenty of food, water and electricity.

So choose a Hi-Fi system and one album or compilation to listen to for the rest of your life.

I would choose.............

The Rolling Stones - Unsurpassed Masters ( Vol 1 - Vol 6 )  ( bootleg ).

Cheers,
JHB.

The only album that I love every song and will listen to from first to last track is Iron Maiden - Powerslave.  I have a whole bunch of favorite albums where I like almost every song, 4 Strings - Believe is the first that comes to mind in this sense, but there are a bunch of favorite albums where there are 1 or 2 or 3 songs that I don't like but absolutely love the rest.. I'd have to break those down by genre.

Joan Baez, the first, eponymous, album.

There's a CD re-issue with "bonus" extra tracks, which were very wisely left off the original release. The criterion for inclusion was, obviously, perfection.

That's a toughie, but luckily one I decided for myself a while ago.  Therefore, I can actually give a single answer (and it's not the same answer I used to give, either).  For sheer consistency, variety, and overall character, I'd have to go with Genesis' A Trick of the Tail.  Of course this is all very subjective.  But oh so fun.

Currently coming out of a very dark period of my life, I find it wildly entertaining to mentally flip through my "book."

~ The Cars - Candy-O

~ Simple Minds - New Gold Dream & Sparkle in the Rain (Had one album on cassette side a, other on side b, and set auto-reverse for constant playback)
~ Love & Rockets - Express

~ Radiohead - Ok Computer

...and for every album, there are 33 others I loved as well...

Rush - Power Windows.

It combines my love of 80's pop music and Hard Rock/Metal with a very strong emphasis on songwriting and musicanship that I love in Power Metal and Prog. Metal.

It is the only album I have ever heard where every song is a masterpiece.

Other albums have had more songs that are just as good, say 12 songs I consider the best music has to offer, but this one gets absolutely everything right.

I know that I'll never be able to narrow it down to just one album. I can't even do that by genre, for the most part.

Yes, I've completely broken the thread rules, but believe me, I'm actually trying to limit them by genre. Anyway, here it goes:

Jazz:
Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

Blues:
Howlin' Wolf - Howlin' Wolf/Moanin' in the Moonlight (still cheating with this one, it's 2 albums on 1 disc, but I always listen as if they're one)

Hip-Hop:
J Dilla - Donuts
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
The Pharcyde - Labcabincalifornia
Slum Village - Fantastic, Vol. 2
Flying Lotus - Los Angeles & Cosmogramma

Electronic:
Massive Attack - Blue Lines & Mezzanine
Björk - Homogenic
Burial - Untrue
Saltillo - Ganglion

Rock:
Jeff Buckley - Grace
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Morphine - Yes
Tom Waits - Bone Machine
David Bowie - Low

Pop
Fleetwood Mac - Tusk (but not with the edited CD version of "Sara". I'll never understand why they did that.)
The Beatles - Abbey Road
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

R&B/Soul/Funk
Marvin Gaye - What's Goin' On
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Sly & the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On

From early 1959, "Belafonte at Carnegie Hall"  I know most of you on this board aren't old enough to remember 1959, but I was a teenager and I remember.  This was a landmark recording.  The first I ever heard "on location" (outside of studio) recording that actually had good sound.  Heck, it had GREAT sound!  Okay, now I need to find a CD version and see if the magic is still there....

Didn't think I'd see this. Dad had this on open reel in Germany in the 60's.

U2 - The Joshua Tree.

This album impresses me on a number of levels, the emotional depth in the song writing, the instrumentation/ambience, the cohesiveness from start to finish, no weak songs, the engineering, etc. U2/Langois/Eno created something magical here. It also had a huge reception at the time and was pretty different from what was mainstream pop at the time. I also find it amazing where it came from as in my view U2 a couple of albums previous just weren't anywhere near this deep or polished.

Ha! I would have answered the same way ten years ago as today.

Guns 'N Roses - Appetite For Destruction. They say grunge killed glam, I say no way! This album did, with its technical proficiency and hedonistic gritty glimpse into the reality of life in LA, GNR made bands like Ratt, Warrant, Poison, Skid Row, and (ew) Winger sound like high school glee clubs. One of the very very few albums where I definitely say there is 0 filler. Once it's on, it's all the way from Jungle to Rocket Queen. When I'm drunk, it's Appetite. When I'm pissed off, it's Appetite. I can't even say that about my favorite bands albums, since I can nearly always point out a 'skippable' track. From the black cover with the four skulls, to the robot rape scene hidden within that would have shocked and scared my parents had they seen it in 1987, the album screamed badass, and it was! (never did show my parents the inside of the cassette cover haha)

Ballads is a jazz album by John Coltrane. It was recorded in December 1961 and 1962, and released on the Impulse! label in 1963 as A-32 and later AS-32 (the "s" is for "stereo"). Critic Gene Lees stated that the quartet had never played the tunes before. "They arrived with music-store sheet music of the songs" and just before the recordings, they "would discuss each tune, write-out copies of the changes they'd use, semi-rehearse for a half hour and then do it". All the pieces were recorded in one take, except for "All or Nothing at All".[2] In 2008, the album was a recipient of the Grammy Hall of Fame award.[3]

Best soundtrack ever - Gladiator by Hans Zimmer.

That is really an awesome album, and very sad.

I'll have to throw in a soundtrack as well:
David Arnold -- Stargate

It might be a dull movie but the soundtrack is one of the most powerful and dynamic pieces of classical music I've ever heard.

My former brother-in-law played trumpet on the 'Stargate' OST. But, despite that (just kidding, Mark!), it's actually very good indeed.

Naming the very best is an exercise in masochism, like 'Desert Island Discs'.. But here's a few pearlers to go on with. Check 'em out:
Joe Jackson - Look Sharp! Hooky, snarky, tuneful.
Burning Tree - Burning Tree. There are two bands with the same name, so be careful - it should have tracks called 'Turtle', and 'Wigs, Blues & High-Heeled Shoes'.
Judee Sill - Heart Food. Or her eponymous first album. Transcendent.
The Nits - Giant Normal Dwarf. A magnificent set of imaginative strangeness.
Love - Forever changes. Everyone's written about this better than I could.
Frank Zappa - The Grand Wazoo. His funky, jazzy 'big band' album with only brief vocals.
Garth Hudson - The Sea to the North. The multi-instrumentalist of The Band lets rip at length with everything from drunken Bach to talking drums on a strange and beautiful musical trip.
Dub Colossus - A Town called Addis. Dub reggae meets Ethiopian folk music, with magical results.

Quote
The album's influence on music, including jazz, rock, and classical music, has led music writers to acknowledge it as one of the most influential albums ever made. In 2002, it was one of fifty recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. In 2003, the album was ranked number 12 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

John Coltrane's A Love Supreme gets my vote - maybe even beating my Pink Floyd albums as my all-time favorite CD. Late-period Coltrane (from ALS to his death in 1967) isn't for the faint of heart, though

Get a hold of Coltrane's "First Meditations for Quartet" I can't tell you how many times I have listened to this since it's release in 1977. You will laugh, cry, dance and feel the depth of serenity.

I could never choose an all time favorite album. Even a list of my favorites would have to be about one hundred, but I will throw out a few that would be in there if you don't mind.

One would be "Steve Lacy Raps" Good luck finding a copy though, sorry, it didn't make it to the digital world. My copy is on vinyl.

Love that album.

My at-the-moment favorite is in a totally different genre- "Redbird." Americana played by four stellar musicians, recorded with a single point mike in a living room. Very little processing, very natural sound, GREAT music.

I couldn't pick just one, but these would be in the tops...

Speak For Yourself by Imogen Heap (melodic, harmonious, eclectic synth poppy type of stuff, like no other)
Scarlet's Walk by Tori Amos (soft rock--definately great in every aspect)
The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails (crossover rock-industrial/electo-industrial/soundtrack)
and various albums by Tipper (doesn't fall easily into any kind of genre other than trippy electronic music)

Really can't pick just one, depends on mood.
Led Zeppelin I, II, III or Led Zeppelin (IV). All are simply amazing but seeing it was their debut might have to go with I.

Equally tied with Animals, Wish You Were Here and/or Dark Side Of The Moon.

If live releases count: tied between The Song Remains The Same and Band Of Gypsys

I guess someone may have insinuated somewhere in this long, old thread thatm naming a single fave album is a task akin to picking which your favourite child or arm is.

So, considering, a good album is the one that epitomizes what music should be all about, i.e, the one that picks you up and puts you in a better mood, whatever your current emotional state happens to be, then, it will have to be for me the one below.

Though usually overshadowed by London Calling (also cracking good) and their equally great eponymous debut in most fanboys' best list, it is the one I consider what Joe Strummer's  and the boys' sound was all about: a plethora of different styles and genres that somehow sounded exclusive and original.

Not to mention it always reminds me of my long strolls about London, in the early 00s, whilst doing my beloved street photography, mostly - then in properly Lame-encoded VBR files, of course.

Unless you didn't make yourself clear enough, and will rephrase that so as we won't interpret it as a innuendo, this thread (or most other threads on HA, for that matter) was clearly not created with the intention of judging anyone's personal choice.

I'm not judging anyone's choice.  I have and frequently play many of the records mentioned.  I just remarked on the lack of classical music among the suggestions.

I place the Bernstein 1990 reading of Mahler's Second up there along side of Sgt. Pepper and DSOM myself.  But why is classical music so ignored in this thread?

Gee! You do have a bee in your bonnet, don't you?

Wouldn't it be simpler just saying (I'm assuming you have already) what your favorite (classical) album is and move on!?

Can't you just come to terms with the fact that most who replied, may not have chosen a classical album as their best, favorite album - and in compliance with the thread's title of naming a single one - just because said favorite album didn't happen to be a classical title?

For that, you might as well create your own What's -your-favorite-musical-genre thread - assuming that, I doubt it very much, it hasn't been created yet.

If my memory (and my uni years) still serves me well, you're quite possibly expecting a quantitative analysis of data that was initially meant just to be qualitative. In other words, you're barking at the wrong tree, man!

Don't know, but I can name about half dozen members who are quite enthusiastic about the style.  One of them even works in production of classical releases.  Haven't a fucking clue why none of them have posted.

Do you see anything wrong with the topic that would prevent people such as yourself from providing an answer since the topic has been alive for over a dozen years?  For the life of me I can't.

Best album ever, the most influential for me?

I've followed this thread for a while, unsure of which album to post, but I've decided that it would have to be Nightfall in Middle-Earth by Blind Guardian. It was the album that got me into metal, along with Secret of the Runes by Therion.

I think one could safely assume there is a trend in how our favorite albums have provided us with not just the background music, but have in fact played an important role during the highest points (or the lowest, depending on the case) some time in our lives.

From the intimate angle the Cure's Pornography is what made my head burst first, then over so many years and it surely will till my end.
For regular music listening there are so many but Fields of the Nephilm's Elizium or Pink Floyd's The Wall stand out when you ask me today.

I guess no one can deny how beautiful classic music can be like a Cum Dederit, Mozart's Requiem and so many more. It is just not the language that can hold me hooked for to long like the Voice of a Carl McCoy.

Regarding classical music, I have always thought of the genre as more composition-oriented than performance-oriented, while jazz is at the other endpoint. Asked for the best classical works, one would name compositions. Asked for the best works in rock, one would name albums - and if you go "but isn't the live album [xxx] better?", quite a few would write it off as a compilation-thingy that does not really count.

And from a practical point of view, one needs a vast knowledge to start sorting among the best recordings of the best compositions. (Huh, how many recordings do I own of the BWV 565 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toccata_and_Fugue_in_D_minor,_BWV_565)? Can I pick just one? At least it is easier to just name the work.)

like the Voice of a Carl McCoy.

Finally got to see some FotN shows the last few years. He doesn't do long concerts, though.

Glenn Gould playing Bach's Goldberg Variations, 1981

This is kind of a novelty because it was a very early CD, and my understanding is that the original “red book” intent was to have CDs use index points when they required gapless playback. I don't know if any CD players were actually not gapless between tracks (I do remember reviewers testing for that), but many CDs were produced that used index points instead of track breaks. This CD is one of them (it contains a single track with 32 indexes), and a few reviews on Amazon mention that the track breaks are all messed up on newer (32 track) releases, so that's too bad.

I also have a Wish You Were Here with two tracks (one for each side of the LP).

The reviews also mention the humming along that Glenn was prone to do, and it's obvious in this recording. But if you can get by that (I don't mind it at all) then this is a recording that you can listen to countless times without ever getting tired of it. It's fantastic music, beautifully played.

Pretty much this. The second I sing praises of, say, Vänskä's new Sibelius cycle, I'll not only get people chiming in about how Mahler is better than Sibelius, but also people saying they prefer Vänskä's *other* Sibelius cycle, or some 1920s recording that is obviously the best because how dare a classical person use sound quality as a "best" criterion.

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours, cliche, I know.
Elton John - Captain Fantastic...
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Badfinger - Straight Up

Classical
Debussy - La Mer (There is a Karajan disc I adore with other selections..)

Rage for Order

A deep one that does not really flash everything it has got.  Took me years to realize it was indeed more than just another good album.

Won't make my top 1, though. Not sure if I bother to really insist on one anymore. Last time I did, it would have to be Morningrise.

I really feel their latter albums benefited greatly from Fredrik Åkesson's guitar work (my current avatar), but Still Life is definitely also a gem.  Morningrise is still very raw but shows many of the elements of the brilliance they will later refine.  In keeping with my previous post it reminds me of The Warning or Awaken the Guardian.

The best Arch album I think, with Under Stained Glass Skies probably being his highlight.

Viola Beach (their one and only album and no more will be produced, too bad as these guys had talent, I thought it was a nice gesture for Coldplay to headline as this group at Glastonbury):

Depends. In terms of musical and lyrical quality (not so much of commercial success) and in no particular order:

- King Crimson: Lizard
- Bob Dylan: Blonde on Blonde
- echolyn: mei
- Yes: Relayer
- Mogwai: Mr. Beast
- Yezda Urfa: Sacred Baboon

I only included albums which I, having listened to them many times, still like to listen to every few months without being bored. Sadly, other great albums are too easy (e.g. Velvet Underground's "White light/White heat" and Gentle Giant's "Octopus") and I just know them too well.
But I guess my answer would be different ten years from now. :)

The idea of a best album is pretty alien to me, but let's say I had to bring one only on a desert island, it would probably be one of these:

or, since I can't compare rock and jazz music:

For the last eight years it has been:
Coil - Stolen And Contaminated Songs

That is almost as long as any has been on top.

Hmm, maybe it's fallen.  I haven't listened to it much lately, but that's a poor test.

The Black Rain by Anoice is pretty damn good.  Let's call it that 11 years later.

But I rarely listen to it anymore. I actually made a list of my top 50 for a friend around 15 years ago, and then I placed the following number two (after the above), so since I've dethroned Parliament, I now place the following number one:

An interesting question (and a variety of answers).
That will differ as much as it can, but perhaps you get a good overview to what will be "all time classics".

It is in fact for me a hard question to answer, the "best album" i own changes quite often and i would have to separate between genres (even if i hate genres).

Hmmm... if i ask WinAmp then the result is a bit questionable, it reports the soundtrack of DOOM as most played (it's a quite new machine), followed by "DOOM II" and something complete different "Brenda Wooton" respectively the album title is "Crowdy Crawn" together with some tracks by the Grateful Dead - at all not very meaningful.
Recently yes "Crowdy Crawn" is something i listen often to but i can't rate it as best.

There was times in my youth when i immediately would have said "Wish You Where Here - Pink Floyd".
Then "Triosonaten" by J.S. Bach (played by whom ever - even the machine)
Or "Wake of the Flood - Grateful Dead"

And yes to stay to one i would say "Wake of the Flood" is the Grateful Dead album i like best and de-facto i'm listening most time to Grateful Dead (mostly live recordings which i can't count as "album").

I know I should not say this but 'Dark Side of the Moon' is one way over rated album. Half the songs are boring. There, I said it.
Dub Side of the Moon by Easy Star All-Stars makes it more interesting.

I was also of your opinion. This album had a good sound for its time. I even preferred  certain ACDC or eagles albums.
But after watching the documentary Classic Albums: The Dark Side of the Moon , I changed my vision of this album and I listen to it differently.
