Tag Fixer for Foobar2000?

Hello,

I'm looking for a good way to scan my ~7000 MP3 files and automatically fix their tags. For example, use current information to make genres, titles, artists, albums, etc all consistent and correct. Right now TuneUp for iTunes seems to do exactly what I want, but it's for iTunes. I was hoping there was a similar plugin for Foobar. Even a third party one (that doesn't require iTunes) would suffice.

Thanks in advance.

There are lots of components out there to help you tag your files. Some helpful links :

The above will help you find download links and information about several tagging components.

This is one which I don't think appears in the pages I linked above.

I know you asked for a component or plugin but do you know about MP3Tag? Located here http://www.mp3tag.de/en/ I have used it to clean my entire Library and embed Album Art. I also use it each time adding new stuff to library. It may be a bit more "manual" that what is sounds like what you want.

I don't mind doing it manually, in fact I prefer it since doing it automatically yields incorrect tags sometimes. The thing is I have over 7000 MP3s, and most of this stuff I cherry-picked from albums. I don't always know what forms a complete album. Sure, I could google each and every single album and then search my library to add everything manually into an album, but jeez that would take days wouldn't it?

I guess I'll just suck it up and do it. It'll get done slowly but surely. I'll try your application, it looks interesting. I'll also check the links provided by tore.

PS: Is there an IMDB-like source for albums? I need a good website to use when I'm trying to figure out which songs belong to what albums.

Thanks to you both. Cheers!

Nonsense. You need nothing but foobar2000 to tag your tracks.

Except that I have to Right Click >> Properties each time I want to change tags, and when I'm editing 7000+ MP3s, this takes its toll. I would rather the information be in a pane to the left that I can directly start editing (Like it seems to be in MP3Tag).

It sounds to me like you're not very familiar with how to use the Properties dialog.

How did you draw this conclusion? I'm not complaining about HOW to use the properties dialog, but rather the extra clicks involved to get to it. If properties dialog was always up in a pane somewhere then it wouldn't be a problem. But for the most part I'm not an expert at Foobar so I might be missing out on some essential features. You shouldn't fault me for not having domain knowledge. But as far as your comment goes, it's incorrect. I do indeed know how to set values in the properties dialog.

Ugh, you're another one of those people for whom a click to pop up a dialog is a major headache.

Other than some basic scripting tasks for which I use the Masstagger, I use the Properties dialog exclusively. Select the album, bring up Properties (mapped to F4 in my case), edit, commit, next. I spend far more time actually editing metadata than I do pressing F4. F4 changes the focus to the Properties dialog anyhow, so it saves a click to focus on the editing widget, as that seems to be what you have in mind.

In short, it saves you no clicks. As a matter of fact, if you want to click on something, you can map properties to a toolbar button.

Tell me how can I embed album art with Properties?

Nonsense Void.Pointer,  until the benevolent "super mod" gets back with you,  continue using mp3tag.  Why ride your bike to work when you can take your car?

lol. I like that analogy. I'm going to try out MP3Tag when I get home. Thanks for being so helpful and polite.

Tell me why the other ways of providing album art are not acceptable. Embedded album art is supported to read, not supported to write. It is rarely proper to write it to files, especially as most files represent tracks rather than albums.

I never said other ways are not acceptable. I remind you, that you said other methods than properties dialog are nonsense. I asked you how it could be done, as you said my suggestion was nonsense I assumed you to know something. I ask you why other means of tagging are not acceptable?
It is "rarely proper" compared to who or what? Is this your opinion? All of my tracks are from albums. I don't have singles and I don't know what the op has I merely offered him a solution that I find great for my purposes.

I find the comparison of riding a bike rather than driving a car quite tactful here. While the use of properties dialog is good for short distances over the long haul (7000 tracks) you need something more robust.

@void.pointer Sorry I have not used Picard from MusicBrainz.

Just throwing this out there, but if it is the standard to "not " embed album art,  you can use mp3tag to remove the  existing album art.

One case I have for embedding the album art is when transcoding for mobile device use (iPod) I believe the art needs to be embedded in the file tag to display on the device.  It would be nice to do that w/Foobar even if the original art was still in the album file folder, etc.  It can also get tricky to manage the art in folders with individual track files from different albums.

Purely a convenience factor - it would be nice to have an option to preserve or embed album art during transcoding.
Was that a 1 or a 0?

Picard is indeed helpful - it has a vast database of albums. It's fast, utilizes acoustic fingerprints (Or automatic lookups for files without any previous information), tag lookups (To find albums based on already existing tags), or you can find albums manually though their website interface. Give it a try, you'll like it!
Take a look at this tutorial, if you want to see how it looks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUzXgale5bc

As for Foobar, have you tried selecting multiple files and cliking properties? If you then double-click or right-click->edit a tag (Artist, title etc.), you don't need to open the properties dialog for each file! Select multiple tags and it's even quicker!

You can remove it with foobar too with rewriting tags

IMO OP got good first reply, and I'll add to that: tagger_mod component
Also properties are powerful tool - it's not just for entering values, but that comes with usage. Properties has "Clean Up", "Capitalize" and some more advanced tools

Inline editing is available with CUI (in playlist and in item properties panel)

Picard is good if your tracks are mess and you don't know which track is which by listening, thou it price is time, lot of it

metalboy, sockpuppetry is not permitted here. Do it again and you will be banned.

Last time I used foo_dop, it automagically transferred album art with the files I sent to my iPod. This use case is already covered.

Well I've started using MP3Tag so far and I like it. However, if I don't know which songs go to what album it becomes tricky. For example, I have 50 songs from the same artist. This forms about 3-4 albums probably. However, I can't select all 50 of them and have MP3Tag tell me which ones belong to which album apparently. I wish there was a way to do this. Most of the time I don't know what songs go to what album. I could, of course, search each song one by one but this would take ages!

Another thing is that freedb search kinda sucks. If I use it on a single track, it gives me over 100 results of crap that isn't even related to the song itself. It makes me wonder how it is generating these results. freedb only seems to provide useful results when I select multiple songs and attempt to find tag information that way. I also notice that a lot of times certain information is not provided by MP3Tag when I use a tag source like Musicbrainz. Genre, for example, is commonly blank for some reason.

Other than those two issues, MP3Tag is very quick to use and I like that I can set album art. I just wish it had a little more automation to help speed the process of grouping things into albums a lot quicker.

Anyone have any advice?

I've never been able to wrap my head about that Musicbrainz Picard tagger thing, though a lot of that is that I couldn't be bothered to put any time into it. I'm sure it's quite a useful tool, and I have a lot of respect for the Musicbrainz project as a whole.

Having used both MP3tagger and Foobar2000 to tag files, I'd say that they certainly seem to me to be of roughly equal utility, with the exception, as noted above, of adding embedded art to, or removing it from, files. (I prefer to remove embedded art from all of my files.)

I'd personally probably use MP3tagger for a non-automated job bigger than a few dozen files, but that's mostly because of my personal bias in favor of specialized tools as opposed to one-size-fits-all solutions. (Which is also why I use dedicated applications for ripping and burning CDs, even though FB2K can perform both these tasks quite well. (Well, I've also never been able to get foo_burninate to work with my hardware, but the theory is sound.) This is, of course, just personal preference, and I'd be hard-pressed to say that one is actually better than the other except in the most incremental, subjective ways.
