VLC media player

I am using VLC as my primary media player and it usually plays everything, no problem.  However, it sometimes will not play wma files.  Sometimes it doesn't even recognized them.  Also, some mp3 files will not play.  They load up properly, but when played, they produce no sound and the slider skips quickly to the end of the track.  It will go through the whole album this way in a few seconds.  I know the files are not corrupt because they play fine in itunes or windows media player.  Anyone know what is causing these problems?
