cannot install mp3DirectCut

Although it has been a couple of years, I do seem to remember having mp3DirectCut installed on my Windows10 computer and that I used it a number of times. Today I could not find it.

I therefore tried to reinstall the program. I still have the download stub in my software source folder. It would not work.

Next I found the author's website and downloaded the latest version stub. As was reasonably expect able, the same error occurred as said error doesn't seem to relate exactly to the program per se.

Free Extractor Error
An error prevents this program from continuing.
Could not extract the current file. Access is denied.

This reads like some sort of MS security hangup. Is MS now policing PCs to decide what they can and cannot be allowed to run? Is there another explanation? Is there a work around?

The file (if I found the correct one) looks like a self extracting archive. The file could have an alternative stream (Zone.Identifier:$DATA).
One way to disable (if exists) is to right click on the file and select Properties. Look for an Unblock button at the bottom of the General tab. http://woshub.com/how-windows-determines-that-the-file-has-been-downloaded-from-the-internet/

This won't help you but I have it on Win10 64-bit and it works.   I have it on a couple other Win10 computers too.  I also use it very rarely...    I don't have the latest version.   I have 2.20

It's installed in C:\Program Files (x860)\MP3directCut

I don't remember if it was "installed" there or if I manually copied it there.   It doesn't actually show-up in my start menu so something's funny, but I have a folder with audio application shortcuts on my desktop.

I have another computer with a "special folder", something like C:\Program Files (other) because some programs wouldn't install to the usual folders, but the computer I'm on at the moment doesn't have that, and I don't remember if MP3directCut was one of those "problem installations".

I run Win 10 Home 64-bit and have v2.25 installed and running without issue.

Might be some NTFS permissions problems with temp dirs. Do you have admin rights? Did you try to shift-right-click the installer and run as administrator?

There was no block/unblock option on the properties but looking for that reminded me of something else I had not done for some years. I chose Run as Administrator. It ran, it installed. I see, now that I'm back here, that is just what nutra80 suggested.

It did not put the program on the Start menu but I really dislike the Win10 Start menu anyway.

I also see, on the instructions jaybeee copied to the thread that run as administrator is recommended.

I faced the same error yesterday. I right clicked and run as admin, fixed it right away. The AAC codec dll though. That I did not get to work properly.

P.S.
The computer I'm on today has it installed in that "special folder" which is actually named C:\Program Files (More)\

….But, I still don't remember if I was "forced" to install it there.

Here is a question: Why not use mp3DirectCut as an portable program, no need to install, just unpack with WinRar, 7-zip, or similar and select "extract to mp3DirectCut"

Then, run the mp3DirectCut.exe and select the following; "portable forced"

Isn't it "Program Files (x86)"? It's a standard installation folder for 32bit programs on 64bit Windows.
It might got lost in Start menu if you upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8 or 7.

The 'download' for the program gives one a few hundred kilobytes of control program that is then used to fetch and install the actual program when you double click on it. Its an obnoxious complication but also quite common. Without running as Administrator one never gets the compressed file to do a different approach. If running as administrator the program is finished installing in a couple of seconds over a broadband connection.

It can be easily set up as 'portable' anyway. First, before the download you get to pick the install directory. Even within the default location nothing is added to the registry but you can put it wherever you want. Then when the program is first started one is given a choice as to where to put the .ini file. You can choose the same place as you put the rest of the program code rather than allowing it to be put in a Windows 'user' location.
