Diaeresis are removed from characters in both filenames and tags (umlaut; Ä, Ö)

CUETools doesn't preserve diaeresis — at least Ä and Ö characters are changed to A and O.

Even when listening exclusively English music there are some major bands with "umlauts" in their name — namely Motörhead and Mötley Crüe.

It would be helpful if you explained what you were trying to do.

and allow CUETools to tag the files.
By this you mean you allow CUETools to replace the tags with metadata from the database that does not include diaeresis?
I couldn't duplicate the problem while preserving the original tags. Motörhead, Mötley Crüe, etc. passed to the filenames and tags just fine.

Yes, that was the case. I have been using the CUETools database which omits ¨, while Musicbrainz preserves this data.

Are you encoding just one album and selecting metadata manually from the pop-up window?
