Mono recordings

Howdy everyone,

I recently discovered archive.org, and I've been downloading a good deal of great live shows.  The shows, however, come as flac files, and I'd like to compress them to mp3's.  My questions are:

1.  Is there a program for direct conversion b/t .flac and .mp3 files, or should I use winamp or something to decode to a .wav and then encode with LAME.

2.  The recordings are mono as most are bootlegs from a mic.  I had planned on using -alt preset medium or maybe aps (but the quality is fairly low, so I doubt it).  Given this, are there any LAME settings that can take this into account and can give me more quality for the space it takes?
