Uci : New Common Codec Api/interface

Cheers,

i'd like to inform you that Alex 'foogod' Stewart has created a new opensource / openstandard project on

http://uci.sourceforge.net

aiming to replace the known ACM and VfW ( Video for Windows ) APIs that are currently used for most codecs.

Alex started the project with a clear focus on Unix/Linux out first, noticing that there is no 'common' API for most audio/video applications on Linux, but instead everybody is creating and using his won API for handling codecs. He fell over the MCF transor API by chance and got in contact with MCF dev team. We convinced him that his API could be more than just a solution for Linux, because MCF's transor API was mainly started to make sure MCF files can be created and played on every OS, not only on Windows PCs.

The name UCI was originally 'Unix Codec Interface' and will very likely be renamed to 'Universal Codec Interface' now.

MCF dev team is planning to drop development of transor API in favour of UCI, especially as Alex has promised to respect all needs of MCF in UCI.

I invite all codec developers to give their input to UCI now, to ensure it does meet with the needs of modern audio codecs as well !

This can be done via

irc.openprojects.net  , channel  #uci

or via mail to

uci-devel@lists.sourceforge.net

also via newsreader on
