Title: Show balloon tooltip on song change - missing
Post by: Text on 2009-10-30 22:03:28
In the settings at the "Default User Interface" tab, "Show balloon tooltip on song change" is checked but it does not display the tooltip on song change. I've tried changing the song with hotkeys, changing the song with the interface buttons or allowing the song to change on its own.

Foobar2000 v0.9.6.8
I am using the portable mode

I am on Vista 64

I am using the windows "Aero" theme that is on by default.

Any suggestions (aside from reinstalling fb) ?

The "balloon tooltip" is displayed only when fb2k has its System notification area (tray) icon shown. Does that make a difference?

Thanks for your reply,

No. I had the icon in START properties as "hide when inactive" but after your message I switched it to "show" (always), and to no avail...

I know it used to work a good while back and nothing has really changed on my system over the short time I've owned it.

In XP you can turn off all balloon tips with the MS utility TweakUI (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/Downloads/powertoys/Xppowertoys.mspx).

You might want to make sure you haven't done something like that, or perhaps some other program has changed the relevant registry key.

I'm in Vista 64 and I still get other balloon notifications for Windows updates, new hardware, another mp3 player I have, a clipboard manager, java, etc etc.

Can you tell me where I might find this balloon notification preference at in Vista? Then I can check to see. Otherwise, since I have balloon notifications for everything else, is it safe to assume that balloon notifications are enabled?

Text,

Go to main menu File/Preferences/Display/Default User Interface and check on the right hand the field's content "Notification Area Icon Tooltip".

If this field is empty foobar2000 does not show the balloon tooltip anymore even if both "Always show notification area icon" and "Show balloon tooltip on song change" are ticked.

Yes. This is what I'm talking about. That option is checked already.
The "always show notification area icon" was just something I was discussing with Yirkha

You are missing the decisive addition of my post, it was not only a summary of your discussion with others:

Robertina,

I'm sorry if I misunderstood what you were saying. I have gone back to the start menu properties and changed Foobar2000 back to "Hide When Inactive" and I have ensured that "Show balloon tooltip on song change" is ticked.
Should foobar2000 be on "hide" (indefinitely) in start menu properties?

Please have a look at this (http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/1906/foobar.png) screenshot:

If the field with the red arrow is empty foobar does not show the balloon tooltip on my computer even if the other settings under "System Notification Area" (at the top of the right in the same screenshot) are matching the settings mentioned by Yirkha.

Does this help, Text?

Robertina.

Edit: If a track is marked in your playlist and you are clicking into the field in question ("Notification Area Icon Tooltip") do you see anything in the preview area under that?

The area your red arrow is pointing to on my foobar installation shows
[%artist% - ]%title%

That's it.
So, it is showing something but not displaying on the tray icon?

Your syntax is error-free.

Showing/hiding notification icons on Windows Vista (http://geekswithblogs.net/images/geekswithblogs_net/sdorman/WindowsLiveWriter/DisappearingSystemTrayIconsonWindowsVist_14CD/image_thumb.png)

If necessary change your settings according to this screenshot again so that foobar's icon is shown always. Then reboot your computer please.

Now start foobar2000. Is its icon displayed in the System notification area? Play a song. I hope that the balloon tooltip on a song change now appears.

Still no balloon. It was just a minor issue but nothing I am really worried about.. hence the low priority. The balloon still doesn't show and I have set the settings as you displayed in the picture.

I was running foobar2000 v1.2 on Vista and I developed this problem over 6 months ago. After trying all the things suggested here & elsewhere to no avail, I eventually gave up on fixing it. However, when I finally bothered to upgrade to the latest version of foobar2000 and the problem persisted, I decided I couldn't ignore it any longer.

On a hunch, I tried looking into issues with the notification tray in general, and I found this:

http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/clear-cu...ows-7-vista-xp/ (http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/clear-customize-notifications-tray-items-windows-7-vista-xp/)

I am happy to report that clearing the notification tray cache has solved this problem for me! I hope it works for others who stumble here with the same problem.
