Songbird is very nice looking. It plays FLAC, but has issues with FLAC tags. It's also kind of slow to load if you have a huge library. I use Cog for most of my FLAC playing on my Mac. I'll try Songbird's next release and see if I like it more, but it's definitely worth checking out.

Songbird looks good indeed, but its very buggy and crashes every three songs here. While Play doesn't do some stuff that I'd like to see, it's pretty stable and plays FLAC.

VLC Media Player plays FLAC perfectly.

I use Play.

Got a link for this? It's proving very difficult to Google for...

You'll find it at sbooth.org. Stephen Booth has written a few OS X audio programs.

He's got Max, a ripper, Play a jukebox program, and Tag a tagging program, as well as a few other bits and pieces.

There is also Cog.

As far as I can tell, most players for the Mac organise your music on the iTunes database model. I prefer something that follows a hierarchical directory structure, and I've only found VLC, and Audion 3 which is no longer developed and isn't recompiled for Intel, but whose way of building playlists from directory structures I prefer to VLC.

If I am wrong, I'd be delighted to be told of other players that follow directories, rather than needing precise tagging.

Everyone seems to be forgetting my music player of choice for OS X. mpd.

And Thermin is a pretty good client for it too.

Me too!  You can check out Cog which is still quite young, but has a file drawer showing the file system structure.

More info here:

And on the developer's site:

Cog for a lightweight player, Play for a more full featured iTunes-like playlist features (and applying ReplayGain!), but my favorite for fully networked, cross-platform, open-source, geeked out music enjoyment is the SlimServer/Squeezebox/SoftSqueeze system. Best thing since sliced bread.

Portable: Big iPod with Rockbox installed.

Slimserver builds a database, and especially with the Erland plug-ins, fully leverages tags, but you can play just by browsing the music folder hierarchy too. It can also guess tags pretty well based on one's folder hierarchy structure.

FB2K works fine under Parallels for playing flac, converting, tagging, etc, works over the network fine, but for me it won't play or rip from the optical drive, though it can see the files enough to identify them.
