Title: Wavpack on Windows x64
Post by: fearan on 2006-03-11 21:43:00
Fellow Wavpack users:
I have just successfully built a native Windows x64 version of Wavpack 4.31, direct from the source code on the website.  I have a question, though.  How should I distribute it? I have no experience in releasing software.
Yours Truthfully,
Fearan

I suggest you upload the binary, with descriptions, in the Upload forum.

You could request it to be hosted at [a href="http://rarewares.org/]rarewares along with all the other compiles.

I'll try both. Thanks!

Are there any performance comparisons between the x86 and the x64 compile?

No official test yet, but there is a very noticeable performance increase.  By the way, how would I test this sort of thing?  (Sorry for the noobish question)

Also, the files is available for download in .rar and .zip here: [a href="http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=42357&pid=370896&st=0&#entry370896]http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....=0&#entry370896

Wow... it helps to look at the output...

Here are the operating times for a track I made, with options -mcb24:

x64: 4.98 seconds
x86: 4.97 seconds

I guess placebo strikes again with these encoding times!  It didn't really help at all...

Also, I'm using an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice with slightly inadequate cooling, if that helps.

Hi fearan, thanks for making this available. BTW, I was catching up on my e-mail, so it would have been today!

It was not a big surprise that WavPack compiled correctly for 64-bit, though. A while back I modified it to compile for 64-bit (with a lot of help from Garf), but it's nice to know it hasn't been broken since then.

At that time Garf measured a very nice speedup, so I'm not sure what your timings indicate. Sometimes WavPack is limited by disk speed, so having source and destination on different physical drives may help. Also, the -h or -x modes might provide a better test of CPU crunching.

Thanks again!

It seems that as of last evening there is an x64 compile by Peter Pawlowski already available at Rarewares.

Don't know if this is a stupid question or not ... can wavpack files encoded with the 64bit version be decoded on a 32bit machine?

Yes they can, seeing as the 32-bit in_wv.dll read the file fine.  I couldn't get an x64 in_wv.dll to work, because winamp is still only an x86 program.  *Le sigh...*
