Storing data as audio (modem-like experiment)

Hi guys,

I enjoy a lot reading about old computers (my first computer was a 8088 XT). I have been interested mainly on the 'digital to sound' conversion in computers like Apple II, where you can store information on normal audio-tapes. I was wondering if there's a program to store digital data as audio for PC as a 'stream' so you can use any medium (instead normal modems where you're restricted to phone lines). I know you can do something like this with Packet Radio to send data over amateur radios but I was thinking something more 'universal'.

I know that the applications of this are very limited but it's a cool experiment anyway!!!
