It's called an ABX test! Look it up. There are countless utilities that can perform them. You should be able to ABX the difference between MP3 file and FLAC file. Besides your HD595 cans your setup is no good either. The output playback from Foobar2000 is much better and it has it's own built in ABX comparator. The X-Fi XM is not what I would consider a "hi-end" card. It's soarly lacking. Hopefully they fixed the resampling problems of course you don't need either of these to perform a successful blind-test, but it does help.

I'm sorry what?! Care to give more information on this subject? Winamp is no good? Hard to believe this w/o evidence.

I didn't say Winamp was no good. I said that Foobar2000 is designed with high quality playback in mind. It uses advanced dithering and noise shaping routines that maximize the audio fidelity on consumer-grade equipment. You can use this to advantage if you plan on performing successful blind tests. That's what I was implying.
