What's the last concert you went to?

Thought it would be nice to know which bands the HA members go to see live, or for classical music fans, what they go to hear performed

I went to see Sixteen Horsepower yesterday, great show. I actually nearly missed it - bought the tickets a couple of months ago, and it just slipped my mind. I suddenly realized which day it was around 10 o'clock yesterday evening (around two hours after the doors opened at the venue), startled my girlfriend by suddenly yelling "oh shit!" and running for the phone...

While frantically searching for the tickets I managed to get a hold of my friend who I was supposed to see it with, who had also forgotten about the whole thing ...  Fortunately the venue isn't too far from my apartment, and we both made it - the band actually went on stage just a minute or two after we arrived.

I'm very glad I didn't miss it, they were brilliant. Dark, rough country-rock, very talented musicians, wonderful lyrics, and an audience who were very happy to see them made it all a great experience. They have a drive unlike any band I've seen recently, and the voice of David Eugene Edwards is remarkable. I also enjoyed seeing both a banjo and an accordion well-used on stage - two of the most underrated rock instruments in my book

I've been listening to their records all day now, check them out if you haven't heard them yet. "Low Estate" or "Secret South" are both good places to start.

Highly recommended if they're headed your way.

Whew...it's been a few years for me!

Scorpions...Red Rocks Amphitheater...Denver, CO...Summer, 1999.

Fantastic show!  I was impartial to the Scorpions up to then, but my girlfriend at the time, being Polish/German and having seen them in small venues around Hamburg for years, was crazy about them, so I bought us tickets.  And Red Rocks is an amazing place to see a concert, too.  You're sitting in an elevated tier of rows up from a covered stage, and you can see the city lights of Denver behind and beyond the stage area.  Parking sucked, but the walk up to the amphitheater was like a nature tour.

And being an outdoor venue, the acoustics generally sucked, but could have been worse I guess since we were less than 50 feet from the stage.  The show was a double performance...two hours of Scorpions followed by two hours of Mötley Crüe.  And even though Vince Neil had just re-joined the band, and even though I used to be crazy about them in my teens, we just weren't much into the Crüe and left after a few songs by them.  At least we beat the traffic leaving.

My last concert before that one was really special, too...bringing along my Stuart Spector bass and jamming on-stage with Bob Croce (cousin of the late Jim Croce) in Philadelphia, Fall of 1998.  Don McLean / Gordon Lightfoot -type of stuff.  Small venue, but we had a blast!

I saw the Deftones and A Perfect Circle live a couple of months ago (20 September, to be exact).

I went there specifically for the Deftones, with APC being a nice bonus, but APC turned out to be way better than the Deftones.

It was musically very impressive (great quality sound BTW), the stage performance was really good and the band members showed great musical skills (of course there are a lot of very talented people in the band).

After that, the Deftones were boring as hell. Also, the sound was totally crap and the show was just lame as a whole.

I originally wanted to buy a Deftones T-shirt at the gig, but once it was over I bought an APC T-shirt instead (and an APC CD).

And now I'm looking forward to seeing Metallica live next month (during their European indoor tour).

The Streets at The Fillmore S.F., CA.  October 6th

Good stuff, great venue, drinks are too small.

edit: unless bands in bars count in which case I've seen at least three of four since then

The last one was TMBG a year or two back...  It was kinda a bummer - the band was cool (Fingertips is awesome live), but half the crowd was filled with a bunch of corpses or something.  They didn't get into it at all.  Flans hung around afterwards and signed stuff for people.  One guy brought in the jackets for all their albums, plus several of their singles (even the O Tannenbaum vinyl), and he signed them ALL.  Another guy mentioned that he liked Cyclops Rock, so he taught him the chords right there.
I am *expanding!*  It is so much *squishy* to *smell* you!  *Campers* are the best!  I have *anticipation* and then what?  Better parties in *the middle* for sure.

I saw Joan Jett and the Blaggarts at the mohican sun in connecticut a few months back.  Safe to say that she still has it.  Her vocals were top notch.  I especially liked the veins popping out of her shoulders as she played... and they were quite visible being only about 20 feet away.  The crew I went with had connections (which is always nice) and we were able to sit within the inner circle with our backs to the hundreds of poor saps outside the perimeter singing very loudly to Crimson and Clover.  There were only about 60 people near the stage, which was strange with there being so many empty seats.  Grapes of wrath I suppose.

Afterwards we had guinesseses with the drummer and bass player in some cheesey 50s bar in the casino.  I didn't spend even one quarter in the machines.

Went to Livid music festival last month, the White Stripes headlined. I'm normally a big fan, but they were terrible live ... I guess maybe they just didnt want to be there.

Saw the Eels the month before, who were great (and played 4 encores). Mr. E is a gun!

the Violent Femmes the other month were also very cool.

Steve Stevens and Billy Idol on 2002-10-13. A marvelous show, indeed. I went mostly to watch Steve's guitar wizardry and got a spot right up at front. Unfortunately I forgot to take along earplugs, assuming he wouldn't be too loud. I couldn't be more wrong  Even with earplugs, it would've qualified as one of the loudest shows I've been to, and suffered permanent hearing damage as a result.

Halfway through the show, Steve came up to me and placed the guitar pick he was using in my palm - quite nice of him  He even played an excerpt from his own composition "Dementia" and that drove the crowd wild. And of course, his trademark Raygun was always at his side [except when he once placed it too close to the fans and one of them nearly snitched it.]

A great show, indeed.

Lynyrd Skynyrd's Vicious Cycle Tour on Oct. 17, 2003 at Las Vegas' Orleans Arena!  Frankie Perez opened, and he was good, but we couldn't wait until he left the stage.  We wanted Skynyrd, and they delivered!  Damn it was a great show, and I will buy the DVD that was just released today!  They put on a great show and rocked the house!

I got free tickets to see weird al a few years back.  At the time, I wouldn't have paid to see him, but I certainly would now.  Excellent show!  During "Like a surgeon" he put his leg behind his head and stood up, never missing beat or lyric.  He's an amazing performer.

Pink Martini at the Liberty Theater in Astoria, OR.  Great show!  Opened by Three Leg Torso who were also good, but not as good.  Pink Martini's La Soledad is also on one of Claude Challe's Buddha Bar.  A haunting number.

The last band I saw live was El Viento Flaminco!  Believe it or not they are from the East Coast of Canada  .  Anyway they are absolutely amazing performers, the guitar playing was very technical, the vocals were incredible and even the dancing was pretty damn neat-o.

The band I saw before that was Les Cowboys Fringants, they are the biggest thing in Quebec right now.  Witty, political and amazing live performers.  They do a kind of blend of rock and folk, but often times with a punk beat, really interesting.

It was way too loud (eXtreme clipping). Nothing for audiophiles those rock concerts. I was soooo glad I had my hearing back after two weeks.
