Then this appears to be an issue that's specific to your system, unfortunately. I'm afraid that I have run out of ideas, but you may want to check the other suggestions that are listed in the FAQ (under Why aren't the tag changes that I make in Windows Media Player being written to file? - General). If those don't help either you may want to consider performing a repair install of Windows 10.

Sorry for not being able to help you fix this. Whenever you have any updates, feel free to report back here.

No problem at all! Thanks a ton for spending so much of your time on this.

The 2nd best option seems to be securing the ratings in WMP. Do you know the file where WMP stores the ratings? If I'm ever changing PC, reinstalling Windows or just resetting WMP, I can use that file so I don't lose my ratings (this should work, right?)

Re: WMP Tag Plus - MPEG4, Vorbis and FLAC metadata support for WMP

The ratings are stored in WMP's library database file: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player\CurrentDatabase_400.wmdb. However, it's in an unreadable/binary format and simply using it to replace an existing file probably won't work. It's better to use the Metadata Backup tool, that can export all library data to an XML file (and import it back, too).

Thanks! That looks cool, will try it out

For anyone who has experienced the bug in Windows 10 where WMP refuses to write any FLAC tag changes to file: I have reported this to Microsoft a few months ago, by creating an issue in the Feedback Hub. Unfortunately without much effect so far, but hopefully this will change as it gets more upvotes. So please take a minute to click on the link below (which will open the issue in the Feedback Hub app) and to give your upvote. Thanks!

Windows Media Player never writing FLAC tag changes to file

What am I doing wrong here? I don't think anything has been backed up here

Metadata Backup needs to be pointed to the folder containing your music files. Instead, you pointed it to the folder containing WMP's library database files.

But this only backs up the metadata which has been written to the files, right? Can I backup the WMP metadata which has not been written to the files?

Re: WMP Tag Plus - MPEG4, Vorbis and FLAC metadata support for WMP

No, all library metadata will be backed up, including ratings and play counts.

So I'm pointing the browser to the media files but it's actually backing up the relevant data from the CurrentDatabase_400.wmdb file?
That's cool!

Announcement: the second beta version of WMP Tag Plus 2.11 is now (finally) available for download here. The first beta already introduced a setting to force Windows Media Player to write FLAC tag changes to file again (more about that here). In addition to that change, the second beta includes the following changes:

  • Fixed: broken tag support since Windows 10 version 2004 (May 2020 Update).
  • Windows 10 includes native Ogg Vorbis support but its tagging capabilities are very limited: only a small subset of tags is supported, such as duration and bitrate. Because of this, WMP Tag Plus now overrides the native Ogg Vorbis tagging support in Windows Media Player while the plug-in is active.
  • WMP Tag Plus now shows a warning at Windows Media Player startup if Write media information changes in Windows Media Player's Library options is turned off, and offers you to turn it back on. This warning can be disabled by the user. Note: when choosing to turn the setting on, WMP Tag Plus needs to restart Windows Media Player for the change to take effect.
  • Fixed: memory leak when using the Refresh song tags functionality.
  • Fixed: long UI freezes when using a laptop pointing stick or touchpad to scroll the credits on the WMP Tag Plus About tab.

As this is a beta, it's always possible that it still contains some bugs. Please let me know if you encounter any problems, so I can fix them for the final release. Thanks!

Works great as far as I can see... Disabled native flac support (which is primarily what my media consists of) and all tagging seems accurate. Thanks for your continued work on this!

Announcement: WMP Tag Plus 2.11 has gone out of beta and the final version is now available for download. Changes in version 2.11 include a fix for broken tag support since the May 2020 Update of Windows 10, as well as a setting to force Windows Media Player to write FLAC tag changes to file.

The only thing that has changed in the final version compared to the latest beta is that a fix was added for the WMP Tag Plus settings dialog appearing oversized on high DPI displays.

See the Version History page for a detailed list of what's new and what has been fixed since version 2.10.

Thanks again, Tim De Baets for your continued work on this. What's the best way to upgrade? Uninstall beta version first, then install the latest? Or will latest install right over the beta? Thanks

There's usually no need to uninstall first, you can just install it on top of the beta. Note that if you would choose to uninstall first nonetheless, WMP Tag Plus would lose all of its settings.

I'm noticing something weird happening when installing 2.11. I seem to have to install it twice on Windows 10 20H2. It installs successfully, appears in Control Panel/Programs and Features but not when opening WMP for the first time. If I close out of WMP, reinstall, it then it appears. Weird? Did not do this on the beta...

The most likely reason for the plug-in not appearing is that you're running the 64-bit version of WMP (in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player) instead of the 32-bit version (in C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player). Perhaps that's also what's happening in your case?

If you choose to run WMP when the WMP Tag Plus installation is finished (by ticking the checkbox on the last page of the installation wizard), it should always run the correct, 32-bit version.

Hi, I have an issue. Every time I exit WMP I get the following error:

I'm on windows 10.

Please advise. Thanks a lot.

Hi, thank you for reporting the error. Unfortunately I don't see that error on any of my Windows 10 systems, so I'll need some more information before I can fix it.

Do you have the latest available release of WMP Tag Plus, version 2.11?

What's your exact Windows 10 version and build number? (to check, press Win+R, type winver, and press Enter)

Do you still get the same error when you launch WMP and immediately exit? Or does the error only occur after performing a specific task in WMP? Perhaps only after playing a specific music or video file?

Hi and thanks for your reply. I just noticed I have v.2.10 (which I thought was the latest). Windows is 20H2 build 19042.746.

The last few days I have been updating some of the artwork in my music files, but didn't think it was related till now. I opened and closed wmp without performing any tasks and the message didn't appear. Then I updated a file's info, by left click on the file's tile in wmp library and selecting "update album info" and when exiting wmp the error appeared again.

I use this way to update some of the pasted artwork of a music file, because I sometimes have songs in a folder that do not belong to the same album and the artworks get mixed up in the library. Updating the album info in this manner puts the artwork right. I only discovered this recently and should have made the connection, but when googling the error I couldn't find anything related to the plugin, so it escaped me.

Do you think installing v2.11 may fix it? I'll wait for your reply before updating, in case you want me to check anything else before.

I couldn't find anything named Update album info - do you perhaps mean Find album info? What's the file type of the music file that you're updating? Could you check if the error also appears when you update a file of another type, MP3 for example?

Yes, please first try upgrading to 2.11. I'm not sure if that will fix it, but 2.10 is already really old and not supported anymore.

Based on your build number, I see that you didn't install the February 9 security updates for Windows 10 yet. Could you try this as well please? It includes the following fix, which might be related: (listed on this page)

Left click on the artwork reveals the menu with the option "update album info". I have tried with mp3 and wav files and the error appears on both. Just give me some time to do the updates and I'll come back to you.

EDIT: Updating the addon seems to have resolved the issue. After installing the addon and starting wmp, a notification appeared about enabling tagging (I don't remember exactly the wording), which I did. Maybe that was needed. I didn't do the windows update cause I'm currently on a meter connection and it was over 400MB. I'll see how it goes and if the issue reappears I'll let you know.

Thank you very much for your help.

Just letting you know WMP Tag Plus is not working in the Windows 11 Insider Preview.
It gives a core component is missing error message.
I'm not surprised.
