svchost.exe errors in Windows 2000

I'm running a new install of Windows 2000 Pro but I seem to be having some strange problems.  When ever I connect with DUN and use IE to browes for a while I get a message saying "svchost.exe has created errors and will be closed down".  After that I cannot drag icons on the desktop or open new windows in IE or copy any text (get "unknown name" error).  Does any one know what is happening here?  It seems strange that a new installation would do this...

svchost is a very basic Windows component, and should work... Are you sure there weren't any errors during installation?

 Wow.  Someone hasn't been paying attention to this whole Blaster/Welchia/SoBig fiasco.

Yuo go here now, and don't come back until you've got this patch installed and those viruses cleaned off of your system.

Ok, big problem.  I can't run any of the fixes becuse I don't have any service packs intalled, and I can't install them becuase I have the virus!  What can I try now?  I downloaded service pack 4 with a 56k modem @28k only to find that I caouldn't install it so need to download it again when I get this thing working...  ARG!!!!

Remove the worm with this:

Then install these:

Then install SP4

JohnV - The first link under the "Then install these...." columns requires SP2 or later. My advice would be to dl a personal firewall, disconnect from the Internet, make sure the virus is gone and then install the firewall. Then you can dl SP4 at leisure and not have to worry about being re-infected. Have fun  B) .

Ok, I ran the online virus scanner, it detected the virus in dllhost.exe but cannot clean it as the file is in use.  So I then booted to safe mode and deleted DLLHOST.exe (in System32/wins), not dllhost.exe (in system32).  But I'm still getting the errors  I have no idea where to get or how to use a firewall so could anyone suggest a better method than this?  Although, you're help is much appreciated ViPER1313

The svchost crashes on Win2k means you have the blaster virus.

I downloaded the full size SP4 (over 56k yes) and ignored anything that crashed during the download.  Then rebooted and installed SP4 (do not connect to the internet before this).

Then download and install the MS Blaster fix:

Then go to Symantec and get the blaster remover program.
