Seeking freeware for real-time frequency analysis

Hi - I'm looking for a program (Windows XP) which will, on a real-time basis, show a frequency analysis when I play music on my computer. I use iTunes and I'm looking for a program which can read the signal off the soundcard and show the frequency analysis. Preferable freeware. Cheers.

Foobar's visualization is nice but I would like to see some gridlines in it ... perhaps RightMark Audio Analyzer (RMAA) could be a solution, too

well, not quite. i'm looking for a program which will pickup the signal from the soundcard. i should be able to continue to use itunes for playback and this program (which i;m looking for) should show frequency analysis (not spectral analysis. any thoughts?

chief, so far you are the closest! though i wish this program had one additional feature: always on top!

however, this program has one flaw: the "noise" level (i.e. when there is no signal is quite high). with adobe audition, where there is no input signal, i see a flat line at -120 dB. any program which doesnt have this problem?

Go into your volume control and make sure mic and line inputs are muted. Even with nothing plugged in, they can contribute a small about of noise.
