Are PC speakers bad?

great $150 systems?  please elaborate.

I already elaborated when I compared my $150 speaker system to my Dad's $700 home theater system.  My speaker system produces better sound including highs, lows, and mids.  My Dad spent more money on his home theater system (it was a all-in-one box system) yet mine clearly produces better sound.

Plus, I am sure there are actually $150 speakers/amps out there that produce great quality.  My main point was that price should not be a deciding factor in quality.  If that was the case then those $15,000 Bose speakers would produce some of the best sound in the world.  Theories like that have been disproved.  Price is not always a determining factor of quality.

If the Bass is muddy and notes hard to distinguish, is that usually because of the speakers or the recording? It's muddy on the headphones too. By the way, this is ensemble playing, not solo.

Well, if you don't have any EQ enabled and a file sounds muddy through multiple speakers/headphones, that normally means that it is the file/recording.  Either that or you are listening to the recording through a series of bad speakers and headphones.  I am leaning towards the first option though.
