Title: Problem with 5.1 audio enable AND disabled (Both)
Post by: Tyrax on 2012-09-06 23:29:06
Hello everyone. This is the problem:

I just formated my computer, before I did everything used to work great with audio. But now I can't use the 5.1 configuration. It's enable but the bass won't work, only the speakers. The weird thing is I managed to get the bass to work through BsPlayer only. But any other application I try just won't work. I've tried foobar2000 v1.1.14a, winamp, flvplayer, vlc, windows media classic. All is the same, only speakers works =/ Some of them only make 2 speakers work...

I did enter individual options of every application and set 5.1 audio as default, but it doesn't work.

I installed the last version of CCCP and K-Lite pack for codecs. And my audio card is a CMI8738/C3DX (PCI). I use windows XP S3 32b.

I could use some help please

Did you re-install the manufacturer-supplied drivers?  The normal Microsoft-supplied Windows drivers might not work exactly right.

The soundcard manufacturer also usually supplies a configuration utility so you can set-up the number of speakers connected, bass management, "soundfield" settings for stereo sources and for "analog" Dolby Surround, and maybe "enhancements" like EQ & reverb.  Sometimes there a "speaker test" as part of the utility package.

I'm assuming you have analog connections (3 stereo cables) to your speakers?  There's no S/PDIF or HDMI connection out of the soundcard to the speakers?

And, you are playing 5.1 channel files from every application?

It's enable but the bass won't work, only the speakers.
The "point one" LFE channel on a DVD normally only contains "Low Frequency Effects" and the other channels contain the regular-old bass.  And by default, only the low frequency effects go to the subwoofer.  The normal bass from a 2-channel stereo recording, or the bass from the 5 surround channels, goes to the regular speakers...

But since most home theater systems have small surround speakers that can't reproduce bass, there is  bass management in the receiver (or in the soundcard driver) that can be configured to route the bass from all channels to the sub.

I kind of "solved" the problem, not the way I wanted nor the way it used to be, but it works for now. I disabled the audio drivers and reinstalled only the drivers of the external hardware I have. I'd still like to have it the old way, but at least it sounds good

Sorry, I can't edit my last post to add this.
As I said, music sounds good, and I can watch videos on media player classic, but with other players such as BsPlayer and VLC, the audio is incomplete. In example, some minutes ago I tried to watch a movie and the soundtrack sounds fine but all the voices of the actors are in mute. When I open it on media player classic it sounds fine,

It seems obvious to me it is a codecs issue, but I haven't been able to fix it =/

I don't know about BSplayer, but VLC is self-contained, while MPC-HC is a DirectShow player. So, you may have to configure those players separately cause they offer their own codecs. Have you dug into the audio options of VLC? Personally, I use MPC-HC, LAV filters and madVR, they can offer much better features, and arguably better quality than VLC.
