Suddenly lost all sound

Hi,

Yesterday suddenly lost all sound to Foobar2000, version 2.241 (x64). It had worked fine earlier in the morning and I hadn't installed or uninstalled anything, changed anything - but zilch, even though all my other media players like VLC and Media Player Classic work fine. Checked Audio Output in settings - every seems fine as it was hooked up to my Asus Asus STRIX SOAR PCIe 7.1 soundcard with headphones. Yes, I completely reinstalled the program twice and rebooted twice - but still nothing. I have Windows 10 Home 64-bit with the latest updates.

Any idea what might be wrong?

DANNY

Try a portable installation, Or rename the profile folder %appdata%\foobar2000, Restart foobar2000 and test (all settings will be reset).

Hi,

I don't have a profile folder.

You find it under %appdata%. But easiest is to try a portable install.

Also, this is the wrong forum, so be prepared to have it moved.

Are you sure it's not zeroed on the Windows Volume Mixer?

Did you accidentally select "Null Output"?

Just found out that the portable version works - now need to work out why the main installer version does not.

Can't edit my post for some reason.

Anyway, the installer version of Foobar has now totally stopped working, saying "the requested operation requires elevation" - even when I run it as Administrator.

Posts can't be edited by normal users after an hour. Which is a good thing. If you had edited this information to one of your ealier posts, no one would have seen it because the post appears as already read.

You don't give a lot of actual details in the entire topic. You have not shared for example what output settings you use. Nor have you detailed what it means that there is no sound. Does the player still act like it's playing and shows time progressing, or does it halt when you try to play something? Is there anything interesting reported in the console? Where exactly do you see this "the requested operation requires elevation" message?

If you look at my original post, it says that in Preferences/settings under Audio Output, Foobar2000 is "hooked up" to my Asus Asus STRIX SOAR PCIe 7.1 soundcard with headphones and - yes - I completely reinstalled the program twice and rebooted twice, but still nothing. Also mentioned that I have Windows 10 Home 64-bit with the latest updates and that all my other media players work perfectly fine (ie, VLC and MPC). Then in another post above, I say that the portable version works OK - it is only the installer version that is not working. That is, I get no sound.

Yes, Foobar appeared to be working as the graphic equaliser jumped around when you I played a file - but now it doesn't even do that but crashes when I try to play a music file, etc saying "the requested operation requires elevation" (even when I run it as Administrator). I don't know how to access the console, but sure that a simple Google search will tell me how to do that.

Any ideas?

Unfortunately stating your soundcard name and that you use headphones doesn't tell a thing how you have configured foobar2000, and your problem is not in the hardware but in your foobar2000 settings somewhere. That is why people who want or try to help you need some basic details.
Console can be found by clicking main menu 'View' and then 'Console'.

I'm still entirely unsure where you get the elevation message. Play file how? Do you get foobar2000 window visible and you try to play a file there? Are you trying to play a file from the shell (File Explorer) and instead of foobar2000 starting and playing, you get the dialog? It doesn't sound like a message in a crash dialog, but now the player crashes?

Let me show you an example by screenshots about some basic things that have an effect here:

Note that the Windows mixer can be out of sync with reality and its slider may need to be touched for it to have an effect.

Unfortunately, Case, I don't know how to post screenshots - but I don't have any DSP effects, or anything like that.

When I click on any media fire, I get a Windows warning saying "the requested operation requires elevation"

If it helps, the console says:

That "the requested operation requires elevation" error message is caused by you configuring foobar2000 to be executed with admin rights. Right click foobar2000 icon, open Properties, navigate to Compatibility-tab and make sure nothing is selected there.

You seem to use default output but manually selected device instance. And you say there are no DSPs enabled. Check that you haven't accidentally muted the player. If you don't have volume control visible in the UI you may not realize that it's muted.

When I Googled "the requested operation requires elevation" error message, quite a few people recommended executing with admin rights, so I did - but to no avail. I have manually selected the actual audio output device - ie, Headphones (2- STRIX SOUND CARD) . The player is not muted as the volume control is visible and the graphic equaliser jumps up and down (when I use the portable version, which is fine).

For testing purposes, can you try these two DSPs seperately:
Downmix channels to stereo
Move stereo to rear channels

Try plugging the headphones into a different output.
I'm just wondering if you're actually getting the front stereo channels and not the rear or side or sub channels.
Did you install the full driver set for your card?

As quick update. I uninstalled my sound card in Device Manager, reinstalled Foobar (to the very latest version as of today), and is now usable - the requested operation requires elevation" error message has gone, the graphic equaliser jumps up and down when I play a file, and I can convert files (ie, to MP3).

But still no sound!

Do you have anymore ideas?

Re-select your output device device in Prefs/Playback/Output/Devices and hit OK.  Before trying to play something be sure the Foobar volume slider is not at 100% (0db) or you'll blast out your ears (have seen it revert to this in similar circumstances).  Also, be sure the Windows Volume Mixer IS at 100% for Foobar.

It's quite difficult to help you. When suggesting something, you will just tell you googled and did something else. When asking about something you do not reply.

People have told you several times to open the Windows mixer and adjust foobar2000 volume there. This has to be done while foobar2000 is playing. You have not once confirmed if you have have done this.

You have not actually confirmed that the foobar2000 isn't muted. You just said you have volume control on the UI. Is it set to maximum volume?

No matter how many times you uninstall the player and reinstall it, the settings people keep talking to you about do not get reset. Unless you ask uninstaller to also remove all configuration. But that still doesn't affect mixer settings.

That Asus Strix Soar seems to come with drivers that allow setting some per-program configuration settings. Go to the driver's control panel and remove every foobar2000 related customization that it possibly has.

As a test try configuring foobar2000 output to WASAPI exclusive. You do that at Preferences -> Playback -> Output, select the headphones device with "[exclusive]" at the end of the name. This mode bypasses Windows mixer and it should bypass all driver effects (though Asus may not respect the latter part).

The card seems to also support ASIO. As another test you could install https://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_out_asio and configure the output device to use ASIO.
