My Clip+ has died. Are there any players that are similiar in function and price. I had it with Rockbox and the main features I liked with that was the bookmarks.

I got fed up of carrying two devices around and am quite happy with my phone now :)

I recently went through the same thing, except my Clip+'s battery was dying. I replaced it (non-OEM since I couldn't source one) but still wasn't happy. I had a look amongst the current crop of DAPs to find something similar but couldn't. The current models seem to fit into two categories - cheap & cheerful or "Hi-Fi"/Hi-Res players (and lots of $$$). However, I found that Rockbox can be put onto the Xduoo X3 and am happy with my choice. It's probably 3 times the Clip+'s size so it's not as pocketable but it seems to one of the few newer players around that can run Rockbox and it doesn't cost a kidney either. If you do follow the same path, be aware that (a) there's a V2 of this player that doesn't support Rockbox and (b) the stock firmware has a flaw that plays some compressed files fractionally too slow.

The statement about the V2 is wrong! Only the housing is different, the internals are the same.

Not sure - there's a X3II which I believe is not Rockbox-able, though I may be wrong. It has such things as Bluetooth, which the original does not, so it can't be the same internals. Maybe we're not talking about the same thing?

I had a clip+ too but too bad it died.
This time I didn't want to pay the premium for a brand-new device from 2009 or so, so I decided to go with Chinese player and here I got the Shanling M0. Although it's made by another "audiophile" company, this time I don't feel like being robbed for snake oil.
It has 2Vrms voltage output, and near-zero output impedance perfect for any loads.
And yes they have 2-way Bluetooth functionality with AAC!
The price I paid was around $99 which was equal to a refurbed Clip+ shipped to Thailand.
No Rockbox anyway :(

I have been looking at the Xduoo X3 on the Net. How does a person tell the difference between version 1 &2?
I would like to put Rockbox on the player, but not sure which version the build on Rockbox.org is for, or is it for both?

Confusingly, there's an X3 (3 sub-versions) and an X3 II, the former is Rockbox-able, the latter (I think, not sure) is not. The mark II has a bigger screen (colour?), Bluetooth, an equaliser in stock firmware and so on. The original X3 has none of those and is out of production, though probably still available. I believe that the version of Rockbox to be found on Xvortex's site (Google it) is suitable for all 3 incarnations of the first model (i.e. not the mark II). Hopefully you're not even more confused now!
Same happened to me last night, hadn't touched the Clip+ in months, stuck it into a PC to charge and display stuck on boot 4.00 and MS Win1064 would briefly see it and show name in the file browser, then pop up says its malfunctioning.
Message of hope is if you keep powering off by holding down menu and power buttons at the same time for about 20 sec, and no idea if it helped, poking a paperclip in what I assumed was a reset hole in the back, it "may" start working again. I googled and prodded at it for about 2 hours, alternately searching the net for a fix or replacement, nothing that promising on either front except for tips mentioned. Each cycle would appear to work, then freeze, but some kind of peel the onion process seemed to be going on where it reverted to older and older versions of firmware until it was back to a pre Rockbox Sansa. I selected revert to factory settings, and then set USB to MSC, allowed reboot, and then the Rockbox automated install went fairly smooth, followed by uneventful couple of hours of listening to music as a test.
Rather disappointing that 10 years later nothing I would rather use appears available. Things that perhaps made it worse or caused trouble, not using it for months, sticking it initially in a USB 3.0 port to charge, clicking yes to MS wanting format the device before use, and finally almost giving up a few times in trying to fix it, mostly prevented by not finding anything.
