AAC - Tech / Re: AAC Gapless playback information

Is it really possible to fix these files after they've been encoded?? I really am clueless but I'd never imagine it being possible and I'd just re-encode.

Since you use DBpoweramp, why not use that? I'm sure it writes everything correctly. Failing that, I'd be using QAAC.

I could do that, but it would be a lot of work. One of the nice things about beets is that you point it to a directory and it will convert only the lossless files, and copy over the lossy ones.

As a test, I used dBPowerAmp to convert Dark Side of the Moon from FLAC to AAC. Synced it to the iPod.  When I let track 1 finish, before track 2 plays, the iPod reboots.

You could try checking the properties of your foobar2000 instance with process explorer.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer

If you have an excessive amount of gdi handles (in the thousands, I think apps/windows conk out when it reaches 10000), that would probably point towards it being some display related component rather than input. Still, it doesn't help much identifying which is to blame.

General Audio / Re: Can Windows volume slider control hardware volume in USB DAC?

The Windows mixer converts to float, mixes, dither, convert back to integer.
I do think it likely bit 24 always being dithered when using the win audio stack hence no digital silence.
Isn't this only true for shared mode? As i wrote i am using exclusive mode.
And
In this case windows volume control does not add noise by itself, i checked: if there is no active noise DSP in fb2k, then lowering volume with windows volume control doesn't change behavior of DAC - there are pops on muting/unmuting when digital silence occurs.

At a quick glance there are newer versions of Monkeys Audio and SACD components.

Next time it happens, have a look at Task Manager to see how much memory foobar is using, compared to how much currently after a fresh restart. (Could be a memory leak somewhere?) - Also do this to check CPU usage occasionally.

You'd probably have to provide more diagnostic information - perhaps see Appendix A / B / C from the end of the pinned support topic - but I'm not sure which one would best apply here. (Devs?)

Also, which OS version are you on?

Scientific Discussion / Re: Cold & harsh audio decay using HDMI - need solution

I'm talking about something subjective, i'm not trying to prove anything. Its my system and it does not sound how it did before and it don't matter if i listen to it every day or not because i have an idea of what it needs and thats what I outlined in the first post but of course i'm open to advice. It doesn't mean the information i give on my system is accurate to your ears.

Either way, i accepted your suggestion and said I will buy a DAC soon to do a blind listening test.

I know DarkOne is a massively popular theme but I think it'll be hard to get help from other people on this due to the timespans involved.

As with any problem related to 3rd party components (which it almost certainly is), I'd start with looking at the troubleshooter report...
