It's very weird if that helps. It's a compressed (though lossless) file, so it takes longer to open. All files take a while to open the first time you open them in CEP, but some files are properly natively supported, and will open instantly subsequent times. WMA isn't one of these. WAV is the obvious one to use.

Cheers,
David.

I've been using CoolEdit / Audition for 17 years (a total of 6 versions, 3 each) and it has been the least troublesome software on the machines. When it opens a .WAV file it looks for a .PK file. If the .PK file exists, the file opens very quickly. If there is no .PK file, it takes longer while it creates one. If you save as FLAC or WMA it won't create a .PK and will open slower every time but I don't find the delays to be burdensome.

I've never experienced any distortion problems and have never had a file damaged.

IME CEP has two preferred families of file formats - 16 bit and 32 bit stereo .wav files (sample rate doesn't seem to matter). CEP always scans files it opens and converts them to an internal file format unless they are already in one of these preferred formats. Files that are in a preferred format stimulate creation of a .pk (peak) file of information about the file that CEP wants to know as it edits it. The presence of a .pk file can greatly expedite opening the file in the future.  Delete it and time will be taken to create it the next time you open it.
