recording problem

if i try sox /dev/audio test.wav it says cannot recognize the input...and if
i specify au or wav it says cannot find au or wav headers...i got an es1868,
what type is the format of the stream coming from /dev/audio ?
i'm sure that device is microphone related because if i try to cat it and to
talk to the microphone i see stream changing when i talk, any idea ?

P.S i've posted this on many ng forums etc and i received no response...is
possible this ? ill appreciate any hint from who records with linux...please
its important, i need it
