Sound problem in BizHawk emulator

Hello. Recently, the sound of my BizHawk (multi-platform emulator) started to stop very often. Before that, I had no problems when using it with a Genesis/Megadrive file but now I started to have this problem with both a Genesis/Megadrive file and a Gameboy Advance file. What can I do?

Works just fine with the Mega Drive/Genesis and Gameboy Advance stuff I have.  This isn't exactly a gaming forum BTW.  Try checking your emulator settings and maybe what else your system is doing that could be taking away resources from the emulator itself.  Emulators by their very nature are extremely demanding applications.

I've tried to increase the buffer size to it's maximum but this did not solve the problem. Also, this is an audio question; not a gaming question.

What I meant is that you won't find as much help here.  Usually with emulators you might want to try changing speed and/or accuracy settings if you're having performance problems as they usually have the biggest impact especially on weaker hardware.  Adjusting the audio buffer if an emulator allows you to do so usually doesn't have as much impact.  Some emulators have alternate timing settings as well if something doesn't perform as well as it should.  Configuring an emulator is a lot like tweaking a PC game to run smoothly.  On more powerful systems you can crank stuff up, where on less powerful systems you have to dial stuff down.

Thank you, what really surprised me is that this problem did not exist when I started to use it and my computer is much more powerful than Genesis/Megadrive while it's weak compared to modern ones (I don't know the power of Gameboy Advance). I hope I can switch to my stronger computer and try this in it in soon.

Did you recently update the emulator or a system driver?  If so there lies the problem.  If not, than try updating those to see if things improve.  Emulators even for old consoles can be become increasing more demanding as they push for greater and greater accuracy in emulating the original hardware.  Try closing other applications and lighting the system load if you're having problems.  If your system is super old, consider upgrading it with better hardware.  If you're using budget hardware consider a better tier system that you can afford if possible.

Without knowing the details of your system, it's hard to say what is causing you problems.

No, I didn't. Thanks.

Just out of curiosity (human mind is always fascinating): why did you opened a thread here at HA in place of a GitHub issue ?

I didn't know there is a github page for it, thanks.

Some questions to ask yourself: Do you have something else running in the background compared to last time you ran the emulator?  Did a recent Windows Update break something with your system?  Did you install something else recently that's slowing your system down a lot and taking away system resources?  Did you change settings in the emulator itself or one your drivers and forget about it?  Have you simply tried resetting your emulator to default settings to see if the problem goes away or doing a clean reinstall of the emulator?  Or resetting the driver settings for your hardware to their default settings or reinstalling any drivers?

Now I solved the problem by switching from "Clock Throttle" to "Audio Throttle" or "VSync Throttle" under "Speed/Skip", and now I wonder why the emulator automatically changed this setting and what's the difference between "Audio Throttle" and "VSync Throttle". Thank you very much.

Thank you very much.

What are the specifications of the PC that exhibits this behavior? At least the CPU model.

This is my older computer and I had to switch to this one a few months ago:

Asus M4A79 Deluxe
AMD Phenom
480GB Goodram SSD
3GB RAM
A 1GB Radeon graphics card

3GB RAM

Depends on what version of windows you are using, but 3 GB Ram is really too small for Windows 10 & 11.
But Genesis/Megadrive games should run OK.

I use Windows 7 on this computer, and I want to continue to using Windows 7 when I switch to my newer computer too.

If you want a good emulator on a better OS, might I suggest RetroArch + Linux (Linux Mint if you're new to Linux).  Looks like BizHawk is also available for Linux.

Thank you, but I'm happy with Windows.

Windows 7 is horrendously out of date, why use that instead of a modern Linux distro like Xubuntu which is good for very low end systems and is still up to date. Linux Mint is fine and all but I find some packages are out of date, like SDL2 especially, which is kinda blee to me.

I have a spare Skylake system I use for *modern* Linux devel which runs Xubuntu and a GT1030 gfx card. I also have a Raspberry Pi 5 I also use for Linux/ARM/GLES3 development.
