Correctly ripping using EAC

I have been reading this forum for quite some time and finally decided I want to rip my CD collection in FLAC. I would like to do it right so I will not need to do it ever again. I have set up EAC according to the HydrogenAudio Wiki. I will post a log below from one of my rips, I would just like a second opinion to ensure it is being done correctly. Also, some insight in what to look for to ensure it was ripped accurately would be great. The goal is have an exact copy of the CD. Any help is appreciated.

No tracks could be verified as accurate
You may have a different pressing from the one(s) in the database

No errors occurred

End of status report

Sorry for the poor format, I am new to this forum and do not know how to fix it.

The fact that ALL of the tracks failed to match AccurateRip is suspicious, although this might simply be that you are ripping a relatively rare CD and your particular pressing is not in the database.

If your rip had been verified by AccurateRip then secure mode ripping would have been unnecessary, as matching someone else's rip is more 'secure' than the test and copy that you used. In future, if you are getting verification from AccurateRip, you should rip in burst (non-secure) mode and only revert to secure if you don't get a match with the database.

The fact that ALL of the tracks failed AR should actually alleviate suspicion that every track was ripped in error.

Have EAC create a cue sheet and run the tracks through CUETools.  Provided there are ARv1 records in the database for this title and the offset(s) are within range of your pressing, you should be able to get verification for the tracks that are error-free.

Alternatively you can attempt to use the disc to determine your drive's offset and then determine the offset of your pressing by finding the difference between what AR gives and what your drive really is.  The offset(s) can be found in the AR log file which can be found in the roaming application store in your user directory.  You can then enter the number(s) in CUETools in order to offset the data prior to checking it against the AR database.

Or you could install PerfectTUNES, the AccurateRip component is free and will check cross pressings for v1 and v2 AccurateRip results, it could be that disc can be verified with AccurateRip.

this doesn't pertrain the disscussion of ripping accuracy, but while your at it. make sure to fill out metadata about the FLAC ripped songs and a cover picture. i did this and now all my files can be played in VLC with the relative cover picture and sorted by album/composer/artist metadata

What's with the recent influx of VLC users?

Yes, we are seeing a trend. It's a great video player, one of the best IMO. And open source, which does help in popularity sometimes. But for music? No, thanks.

I recommend adding the CTDB plugin to EAC, which is used in addition to AccurateRip.
Rip a couple of popular CDs and if both AR and CT confirm them as accurate you're good.

Test and copy in secure mode is kind of pointless if you're not using/can't use C2 error information.

I wish we could explain better under what conditions it's a good idea to use T&C.

First off, I don't recommend using the test and copy operation at all.

Instead I recommend manually generating test CRCs (F8) when using burst mode or secure mode with C2 error information to compare with already-generated read CRCs when the rips can't be verified with either the AccurateRip or CUETools databases.

Wouldn't T&C be ideal for when you're certain there's no chance of either AR or CTDB verification of a disc you should be able to rip without error in burst mode?

If you're not using secure mode sans pointers then sure, you can save a keystroke and whatever time elapsed after the initial copy was finished by using T&C.

I'm not sure if the disc must necessarily be unscratched to determine whether or not to use T&C, though I suppose you're talking about whether to use burst mode or secure mode.

EDIT: I see you addressed burst vs. secure in your edit.

Personally I'd go with a C2 drive that doesn't need flushing over burst if that's an option.  A drive with C2 that caches but configured as non-caching might even be an attractive alternative to burst mode.

Yes, I initially referred to an unscratched disc because I'm trying to figure out a way to explain it from the non-technical user's perspective...what's the decision process for picking burst mode, and for picking T&C? Under what circumstances is it useful? I mostly understand, but it's hard to explain. It's not obvious to a newcomer that T&C (or F8 after) is something you'd decide on after first deciding on burst (which you wouldn't do with a scratched disc) and ruling out the use of AR/CTDB. Taking into account caching and C2 reliability adds a layer of complexity to our as-yet unwritten flowchart, and it's possible not everyone knows or has good info about their own drive.

When I use burst mode, and also if I don't spin up before reading, my drive always produces real read errors w/C2 pointers. I haven't figured out why, or whether it's fixable. I just use have it spin up first and I use secure mode and don't worry about it; the C2 pointers and read errors generally go away, then. But if I were re-ripping my whole collection, I might want to figure out if there's a better way, because I'd rather avoid the wear & tear on the drive when possible. Anyway, I feel like my drive's weirdness further complicates the decision process; regardless of the quality of disc, right now I have to rule out using burst, and thus T&C. I'm probably not the only one in this situation.
