Support - (fb2k) / Fb2k 2.24 preview - 'Exclusive Output Overrides' does not work in Wine
Last post by quidam -
HI,
Use Foobar 2.24 Preview 2024.10.28 with Wine 9.5 in Ubuntu 24.04.
I activated the 'Exclusive Output Overrides' function in the advanced settings and in this preview the option was stored.
I installed the Wasapi component in which the [Exclusive] option appears.
This Playback option also appears in the default items [Exclusive] relating to my device.
The device is a DAC to which I connect through DLNA.

The problem is that I cannot in any way reproduce the sound: both use Wasapi Event and push and 'default' the DAC remains silent.
On the contrary, if I use the 'Wasapi shared' or 'default: device' option works perfectly.

I tried to modify some voices of 'Wine Windows' by accessing, through Winecfg to the 'audio' card, but the result is always negative.

Is there anyone who can show me a solution?
Thanks in advance!

AAC - Tech / Re: A weak point of HE-AAC
Last post by Klymins -
The point of SBR is to reduce the file size. High frequency content isn't encoded but an approximation of it is reconstructed during playback, which works decently for normal audio. The guesses it makes can't of course be as good as encoding the signal as-is, but encoding all frequencies would mean either reduced quality everywhere or using more bits to increase the file size.

xHE-AAC has more advanced tools for encoding everything, including improved SBR. I'd assume Fraunhofer's encoder is the most widely commercially used version and I have no doubt it uses all the features of the format for lowest bitrates.
The open source exhale encoder doesn't implement any of the advanced tools that help with low bitrate quality, so no SBR there.

I think I couldn't make myself clear enough. In my idea, pure MDCT will be used for SBR's frequency range only if the content is too hard for SBR but easy enough for pure MDCT, in other words, if encoding some of the content in SBR's frequency range would be more efficient with pure MDCT than SBR. So, pure MDCT still won't be used for that frequency range for most sounds. I want to attach that sweep encoded with less than 12kbps AAC-LC that sounds much better.

Opus / Re: Opus bitrates for 2.0CH & 5.1CH & 7.1CH audio

Is there some issue with using OPUS in a MKV container?
No, there are no issues. I'm using Opus for all my encodes (x265, FHD, UHD, SDR, HDR, DV) in a MKV container. No problems using MPC-HC / VLC for playback on the PC, also fine on my Kodi-Box. Opus will decoded to PCM and send via HDMI to the AVR, as the AVR can't decode OPUS, the same applies to AAC.

If you need compatibility with a lot of devices, I would advice you to use AC3.

General - (fb2k) / Re: Some ogg vorbis files are not playable in foobar2000 v2
Last post by Peter -
I was forwarded download links from above that were edited out, sadly neither works - former seems to have been transcoded by the hosting provider, latter shows copyright-related error.
What Case said is valid, we've seen more of these files before, specific old/buggy encoders produced Ogg files with malformed timing information and no other software complained about it at the time.
I recommend just ignoring this error, this issue does not prevent decoding, only causes possibly inaccurate seeking.

i am just worried rather bothered about validator reporting those issues. Those files play and are seekable here. a link to the file was already sent to Peter by admin.

Matroska or Webm containers are no solution to me, since i.e. they dont play in NI Traktor. Would converting them to Flac be risky? how about modern ogg or mp3 conversion?

foobar2000 for Mac / Re: How to update without loosing settings?
Last post by Peter -
After working 50 years in the field and having more than once lost settings by some updating installer, I have developed a certain pessimism.
Note that foobar2000 for Mac does not have an actual installer - the DMG just lets you copy the new application to your applications folder, and does nothing else. There's no way for it to alter your configuration in any way.

@ilovefb2k : I loaded your newly posted 1.011 script completely as-is with just the skin folder path mod, and the meter movements are MUCH more reactive and seem more accurate.  Thanks for clarifying the "check setting" prompts!  What I have been doing when I load a new skin is do the "check setting" procedure, and keep the "tweak min/max level" option checked--I am assuming that the latter is performing an additional refinement to using the "check setting" buttons--is that correct?

I did not add the portion of script to 1.01 you posted a day earlier in response to my concerns about needle movement, as I am guessing those changes are addressed in the new 1.011 QM 05-11-24 version.

I have those in BIN format. The VU Editor (that creates the BIN files for foo_vis_vumeter) can not open/read its own BIN files. It opens VU project files. When you are done you can export a project to a BIN file which uses either No Compression, BZIP2 or LZMA.

Does anyone have a bright idea to extract the files from a VU meter BIN file?
I'll second that.  Could someone please make a tool that can both export the image components from a BIN file, and re-import them into the same BIN, overwriting the originals?  Then a user could make say a color change to a meter body using an image editor and then re-save the BIN with that change.  With VUEditor you can only do this by starting with "*.vu project files," not the BIN file.

foobar2000 mobile / Re: FTP server (data/transfer) port used on Android?
Last post by Case -
The feature really is not meant to be used over internet. It's for quick uploading of files locally without having to worry about attaching cables. The server won't even be running when you navigate away from the server page, which renders it useless if you don't have the device in your reach when accessing it.
The FTP server seems to pick random high numbered ports in addition to the configured connection port.
