Of course. All 64 bit programs need a 64 bit OS.

This is a bit exceptional because:

a) core arithmetic in ALS is in 64 bits
b) compiler does a real bad job of optimizing it in 32 bit mode

Assembler coding can probably give a good gain in 32 bit mode, while 64 bit compiler code should be close to optimal.
