Title: foobar2000 v1.0 beta 1
Post by: yandexx on 2009-11-20 17:04:22
(believe it or not, but)
foobar2000 v1.0 beta 1 is now out.

Official Release Notes

Menu layout changes
A new Context Menu structure has been introduced along with a reworked context menu preferences page.
Holding down shift while opening a menu - with both context and main menu - will bring up menu commands that are normally hidden, so you no longer need to go through the preferences page to access obscure commands that are hidden by default.

Reworked Preferences
Various standard Preferences pages have been reworked. The Preferences dialog now has OK, Apply and Cancel buttons. Existing components need to be updated to utilize the new Preferences functionality.

New Edit Menu behavior
With Default User Interface, the Edit Menu commands operate on currently selected items, not just on the currently active playlist. This allows - for an example - to use the Copy command on Album List selection.
This feature currently does not work with third party user interfaces - Edit Menu commands operate on the active playlist just like in old foobar2000 versions; relevant components will need to be updated to comply.

Custom art filename patterns
You can now set custom filename patterns and paths for front cover, back cover, artist and disc artwork. You also have the ability to set a stub image for each of these.

New configuration file format
Configuration of individual components is now stored in separate files. Reading of old configuration files is still supported so your settings will be preserved while upgrading from older versions; however you will not be able to downgrade back to older 0.9.x releases without losing your settings.

Built-in support for Windows Media streaming
Buggy third party components are no longer required to play ASX/MMS/RTSP streams. It's recommended to uninstall relevant components.

Time limit in beta versions
To prevent people from running outdated beta versions, every beta version now expires after four weeks from the original release.

I always believed 2012, the end of the Mayan calendar, was going to be the date when Foobar2000 1.0 is release. I now see how ridiculous my beliefs were.

Keep up the great work!

Those of you confused about the 1.0 version number really don't know the degree of bugfixing that has gone on with this release. There are so many behind-the-scenes bugs that have been fixed, it's ridiculous.

All i can say is that I'm really happy with new features!
Foobar looks a lot better with new context menu, the old one was such a mess... And oddly enough, didnt even realize that it was an issue back then o.0
You certainly know where foobar is going, good job!

One thing bothers me though... What if 1.0 beta will explode after 4 weeks, and there wont be new foobar release? We all gonna have to downgrade, thus all component settings will be lost ^^

Some notes:

* Default User Interface: new pseudo color code system for status bar and playlist view.

Try using > and < characters in the Default UI status bar and/or custom columns to shift color towards the Highlight or Background color.
Example: [font= "Lucida Console"]$replace(%title%,'(',<<'(',')',')'>>)[/font] will darken text surrounded by parentheses.

* You can now change audio output or GUI without restarting foobar2000.

* Album-art viewer: Open action on double-click.

This is great news! Although, .asx streams aren't working for me:

Quote
Unable to open item for playback (Unsupported file format):
"E:\Music\Internet Streams\BBC Radio 1\Radio1.asx"

Another question: will ../artist.jpg work as a search pattern for artist art or do I have to do some titleformatting?

---

edit: I have got asx streams working: for some reason it wouldn't play .asx files already in a playlist, but it can play them when I re-add them. However, it doesn't read the artist and title information in the <AUTHOR> and <TITLE> tags. It reports the path as mms:something instead of E:\something which foo_input_mslive did, which means the art doesn't work (although I can set up art based on the paths now so that's not a big problem).

Portable installs now remember Media Library paths relatively to the install folder.

Could you please consider saving database file in root of media folder?

e.g. If my song folder is C:\Music, then database files would reside at C:\Music\database.fpl & C:\Music\PlaybackStastics.dat.

This way, even a new install of Foobar2000 would retain statistics by just adding music folder to Media Library.

Thanks for your hard work! After VLC went v1 now foobar2000 too

I installed it and am looking around.

I see that the Name format in the Converter dialogue window hasn't been changed. I made some simple suggestions (I think) in this post (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=73923&view=findpost&p=650576) to gain some field space. What about making the window resizable?

One other thing: The Apply Replay Gain in context menu Utilities of mp3 files has gone?

Thanks

Thank God for v1.0, people can stop asking finally...
Some more changes:
Added troubleshooter notice when foobar2000 wasn't correctly closed last time.
Better error reporting for broken FLAC files.
FLAC "native cuesheets" are removed as well when removing embedded cuesheets.
Broken MP4 frames no longer abort decoding.
Updated Vorbis cover art reading to the new spec.
Converter rejects non-console executables for encoders (avoids common mistake of people using installer packages instead of the encoders themselves).
Added MP3 gain target level configuration (advanced preferences).
Added Ctrl+PageUp/PageDown accelerators for tab changes.
Added bindable command which goes straight to the Output preferences page and selects the "Output device" dropdown for faster output switching e.g. using a shortcut.
Added commands for changing DSP presets directly.
Re-added v0.8 menu commands for direct change to a certain volume.
Default UI splitters are thinner/less borders somewhere.
More consistency in UI, "Vista" look everywhere.
  Album list: Removed

Wow, a major milestone. Congratulations to Peter and his team of developers.

My favorite feature so far: The ability to change the audio output in mid-play. I can throw my music to my home theater on a whim, and then pull it back. It works without fuss. Simply brilliant. It's already changed my playback patterns. Restart took only a few seconds, but I wasn't inclined to do it. Wonderful.

* You can now change audio output or GUI without restarting foobar2000.

as I know changing audio output doesn't needed restart, maybe missing something?
as for changing GUI it's the same as old change display then "file > restart" command - foobar is literally restarted

+ keyboard shortcuts filter maybe can be accelerated a bit when typing - timing between typing keys and trying to find matches can be extended i.e. no matter how fast I enter "playlist" it stops on "p", then "pl" then "pla" etc

Some more changes regarding Output preferences page:
Bit depth for DirectSound devices is fixed to 32bit float on Vista+, because the system mixer uses that format internally and other settings caused only unnecessary conversions.
For outputs which dictate the format and sample rate to the application instead of letting it choose (e.g. ASIO), a meaningful message is shown to hint that this is the case.

I myself will wait till the second beta release :-P Unless someone can confirm that the DTS, AC3, MIDI & Channel Mixer plugins work without a hitch!

Not true at all.

Any developer with x86 ASM knowledge and knowledge of kernel/user-mode debuggers can hack the player to not have that problem..... That's not to say I don't support this practise, but realistically, a skilled enough person can easily write a patch to do this, so that it does not violate the license since a modified binary is *not* distributed

What specifically do you mean by "reindex"?

Any developer with x86 ASM knowledge and knowledge of kernel/user-mode debuggers can hack the player to not have that problem.....
This is not really the point, I'm afraid. The time limit isn't there to block users from using expired versions completely, it will just politely tell people running old betas to upgrade to a "stable" version, that's all. Sure anybody and his dog can defeat the check in a second, but then it's not there for those people in the first place.

Just noticed that when editing "Colours And Fonts" section under "Default User Interface", the changes doesn`t take immediate effect and I have to click Apply when I change something to see it change. Intended effect ? If it was, I preferred the instant change and not having to click apply everytime.

And when I go to DUI > Quick Setup > Change Color for example "Gray Orange" it doesn`t change the colors showing in the "Colours And Fonts" menu, they stay the same they were before going to QS > CC. Intended effect ?

Embedded covers lost priority over external covers. Please add back the priority for embedded covers, or at least add a name that can be used in the sources list.

P.S.: I use singles collection, where every file has different cover, and i use folder.jpg for files that i don't have embedded cover. Now for every file the folder.jpg is displayed.

Please don't do this. Embedded covers are cumbersome, add unnecessary increases in file size, and need ID3 tagging software to manipulate - having a separate image file is far easier to manipulate (in any file explorer) and makes much more sense. Thanks for the 'Custom art filename patterns', I've been wanting that for a while since the newer DUI was introduced.

Pardon my ignorance, but I always thought that the option was for the output device. For example, my USB DAC only takes 16-bit depth, up to 48000 kHz sample rate. I can't complain because DS and ASIO work ok.

How does WASAPI Exclusive Mode fit into this scheme?

I think it MIGHT be a bug, since changing DSP chain takes effect immidietly (it cancels un-applied changes when closing or canceling preferences window) which is IMHO good solution and could work with "colours and fonts".

First, thanks for the release!
Are there any plans to add win7 shell integration to foobar? There is a plugin that activates it, but it's not customizable to the extent i'd like to have (no custom commands on the context menu of the thumbnail, only play and preferences). Sorry if it was asked already but i didn't find anything about it in the pinned "issues and feature proposals" thread.

Agreed. Please give us some way to change the priority of the embedded covers.

Please don't do this. Well, everyone has their own way to handle the files. I prefer to have ONE file that has all the info and not several separate ones scattered around the hdd/folder. Besides, portable mp3 players support embedded art only, at least the ones i saw. An option to set priority won't harm your nor mine way of organizing files.

Pardon my ignorance, but I always thought that the option was for the output device.
And you know what Vista+ does? It has a 32-bit float pipeline. This option hooks foobar2000 right into that pipeline instead of requiring a conversion. Before the audio gets sent to your device, Windows automagically drops it down to 16-bit or whatever. So to recap, before: foobar2000 outputs N-bit audio to Windows, Windows changes the N-bit to 32-bit, Windows mixes with whatever other audio is being played, Windows changes 32-bit to the bitdepth of your output device, Windows sends the audio. The new way skips Windows' conversion step. It's a minor optimization.

How does WASAPI Exclusive Mode fit into this scheme?
It doesn't. It hasn't changed.

I'm glad to see a new version of my favorite audio player.

I wonder if I did something wrong but I have some troubles using the new album art patterns. Does it support wildcard? Not for file extension but for path.

Code: [Select]
ALBUM\
     CD.1l3\
         front.png
         track 01.flac
         track 02.flac
         track 03.flac
     CD.2l3\
         track 01.flac
         track 02.flac
         track 03.flac
     CD.3l3\
         track 01.flac
         track 02.flac
         track 03.flac

When I type “..\CD.1l*\front.png” in pattern album art aren't displayed for tracks in folder 2 and 3. But when I type “..\CD.1l3\front.png” it works fine.

Anybody else get the error message "Initialization failure : Internal Error - please re-run the foobar2000 installer", when installing 1.0beta1?  This error occurs almost at the end of the installation, just after it says in the NSIS log "Created uninstaller".  Of course I re-ran the installer, multiple times even, but this error pops up every time.  I have never seen it until now...

Any idea on how to extract a more detailed log file from the installer, so I can track down what it barfs on?

I found a post on this forum that pointed at a missing components\foo_ui_std.dll file, but in my case this is not missing at all...

Crap.

I must be doing something wrong. I'm a Foobar newbie who is in waaaay over his head running br3tt's XChange3 configuration with a cubic ass-load of additional components. In other words, I'm running a Foobar configuration way above my experience level that I probably have no business running. Well, anyway...I threw caution to the wind & installed v1.0 Beta 1 fully expecting everything to explode with messages of components being banned, components not working right, etc. I've read enough stories on the forum to know what "fun" a new major release of Foobar brings.

So, the installer finishes & the little box next to "Launch Foobar is checked" so I take a deep breath and hit the Finish button. Foobar launches...and......................everything works.

Well, where's the excitement in that, I ask?

Seriously, though, the only difference in behavior is the new "embedded cover art doesn't take priority anymore" thing, but that's no big deal.

Great I have been a user of Foobar for about the last 5 years. I always wondered when version 1 was going to come out.

The exact opposite of Microsoft who take about 3 versions to get any software going. Windows 7 ?

I just love Foobar for its playlists. (the rest I am too old to understand !)

Thanks Peter and the Guys.

Lowercasing the components folder didn't help, but lowercasing "FooBar2000.exe" to "foobar2000.exe" did.

Weird, I would not consider case changing "mangling", but apparently foobar can't handle being "capitalized".  A very strange behaviour, if you ask me.

Keyboard settings (bug?):
- (previously, 0.9) select any of existing shortcuts, hit new - the focus in the field below is on the action form previous command (however its not selected per se)
- (now, 1.0) after selecting a shortuct and then crating new one the focus in the field below always go to "[main] -> edit -> playlist attributes -> copy played tracks to playlist"

It's especially annoying while trying to add few similar shorcuts (for example rating)

All, I remembered one more small but nice feature not mentioned here yet.
Standard Copy command and Ctrl+C now add formatted track title to the clipboard as an alternate format, so there is no need to use Copy Name(s) explicitely (except for some cases when the target program has problem with multiple-format clipboards etc.).

Thank you, Peter.

Thank you, so much.

I love this software so much, it is the first thing I install when reformatting a computer, before Firefox!

I loved it beyond reason a couple of weeks back when it helped me backup my iPod's music just the way I wanted to, with minimal messing of the out-of-the-box settings.

I loved it since day one, when a lot of people thought it looked like the illegitimate child of WinAmp and Notepad.

I loved it since it started playing my beloved MP3s gaplessly, back in 2003.

I loved it when it became portable.

And I'll love it until I die, I'm sure.

I'm not too happy with some of the changes made, but I do like the other additions.

One thing I gotta ask though is that the option to add a keyboard shortcut for Properties (properties tab) no longer exists, so will it be added again in the future? I prefer just pressing a simple keyboard shortcut rather than shift-clicking on the context menu item...

I would also appreciate that very much!

If I delete the Properties' default keyboard shortcut and then assign a new one or even the same to it foobar then opens the Properties tab directly, but there is no possibility to add a shortcut to the metadata tab anymore (sorry for my English).

I just noticed you can change Default UI color/font preferences while using Columns UI now. Awesome! Why is this awesome? Because the album list and playlist/library search windows also use these settings, and it was really cumbersome to alter these before if you were using another UI.

(I, er, do hope this is a feature and not a bug  )

In any event, I'm quite impressed by the new beta. I quite like the refinements I've seen so far, aside from the (yes, yes, I know) reduced customizability of the context menu, which is akin to my favorite restaurant not serving iced tea any more; a little irksome, certainly, but hardly a deal-breaker.

Seriously, excellent work on this release.

(Now, if only queuing up something from a playlist other than the one playing wouldn't switch control to that playlist...)

Is it safe to install the 1.0 beta over the current 0.9.6.9?

The handling of component configuration changed in 1.0 beta 1, so if you installed it over 0.9.x it would convert the old settings to the new format, and you won't be able to convert them back. So, I'd advise you to backup your settings first (%APPDATA%\Roaming\foobar2000), and then install. Also, it could happen that certain components won't load with 1.0 beta 1, because they might be blacklisted for stability issues.

The larger (file size, not image size) cover art is used. That's for cases when there is ugly small embedded image and better quality one as a separate file.
Title: foobar2000 v1.0 beta 1

This was changed due to the fact that some users often had larger, high-res folder.jpg that they wanted fb2k to display and also had smaller embedded cover art for their portables.
I can't find the thread right now but some searching should procure the thread.

Anyways, unless you have some particularly good reason you folders are a mess, that reason trumps you.

I keep Folder.jpg in case of files that don't have embedded covers. And is useful for other programs that don't read embedded covers, and when i'm browsing folders with explorer in thumbnail mode.

P.S.: I only use embedded covers for "Singles Collection", for other albums i use Folder.jpg.

You guys if you handle the problem than embedded cover support should be removed (to reduce executable size), what do you say....

Default User Interface: new pseudo color code system for status bar and playlist view.

Try using > and < characters in the Default UI status bar and/or custom columns to shift color towards the Highlight or Background color.

This is great new feature. However, shouldn't there be another "special character" for resetting color? Equivalent of $rgb(). Maybe "|" character would be appropriate.

I have to disagree. We have some portable music players around here that can't handle embedded cover art greater in size than 200x200. If things were your way foobar would be displaying 200x200 cover art all because I want to have cover art on my players. The new way is not for newbies. It's logical. It's so logical I can't believe that all players don't behave like this.

This is great! Now I know what Santa is going to put in my stocking this year
  • Does it mean that all 0.9 components should work without recompilation?
  • Will new SDK include Default UI Elements API? Is new SDK planned to be released as soon as stable 1.0 is released or will there be some delay?
  • I would also love to see more "under-the-hood" changelog. E.g. what about "relative paths" in Media Library (Case mentioned planned support for mounted drives in [a href='index.php?act=findpost&pid=645795']this topic[/a])
  • The Play command appears in context menu even if it is un-checked in preferences (it only occurs in Default UI). Is it by design?

Looks like some 0.9 components are not working, but that's to be expected. SHN, TTA and MSNalt have reported incompatibility to me, but since all others appear fine, I can live with it until their authors update!

* Default User Interface: new pseudo color code system for status bar and playlist view.

Highlighting in status bar gives another color than highlighting in playlist view. In playlist view highlight is orange, in status bar it's dark blue (RGB 0,0,85) and almost not noticeable

(http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/6066/unbenannt1cu.th.png) (http://img268.imageshack.us/i/unbenannt1cu.png/)

Status bar:
Code: [Select]
[%artist% $char(8226) ]%title%  <<['['[$meta(album artist) $char(8226) ]%album%[ #[%discnumber%/]$num(%tracknumber%,2)]']'$rgb()]>> $tab()$if(%_ispaused%,<<PAUSED>>,>>PLAYING<<) $char(8226) %codec% %bitrate%kbps $char(8226) %playback_time%[ $char(8226) %_time_remaining%]

And a second point: Highlight in playlist view should even be visible if track is selected.
