how to rip the audio track of a DVD in 5.1 ?

i want to rip the audio track of one of my DVDs as a 5.1 wav file and then convert it to a 5.1 Ogg file

Its very easy to do, but the channels will all be coming from the incorrect speakers !

1. Its as simple as Decripting the DVD with DVD Decriptor
2. Extracting the ac3 file using DVD2AVI
3. Converting the ac3 file to Ogg Vorbis using foobar

You can go directly from VOB to Vorbis using BeSweet. No need for the second step.

I have never been able to get besweet to work

This is why I use the 3 step method.

[EDIT - My 2 step guide for ripping and converting DVD audio to 6 channel Ogg Vorbis]

Its also possible to do this without DVD2AVI and besweet
1. DVD Decriptor - only select the audio file and make sure the demux option is selected,  this will extract only the ac3 file.
2. Using foobar, convert the ac3 file to ogg.

[EDIT - But the channels are still wrong ]

thats true. the ac3 file i decrypted is correct. after the conversation to ogg they are wrong. how to i correct them?

hm the ogg file (q6) is bigger than the original ac3 file. and i guess i'm losing quality when transcoding from ac3 to ogg. so why not keep the ac3 file? i think this is the best thing you can do

I think q6 is overkill for a movie, where you have more voices and sound effects than music.

And yes, you are surely losing quality when transcoding from AC3 to Vorbis. This transcoding is only worth the hassle if you get a stream considerably smaller.

I just did some googling and apparently HeadAC3he can fix this problem, testing right now!

Keeping the ac3 is probably the best idea.

It worked, 5.1 channel Ogg Vorbis works properly  (w00t)

Guide update:

1. Decript audio from DVD as explained about,
2. Using HeadAC3he, transcode to Ogg Vorbis

The channels are perfectly ordered, but I had to choose -q0 to get the file around 100Mb!

That might have been the reason, but I honestly can't remember, because its been a long time since I tried to get it to work.  Might try it out again later

hi ! here is a way to play your AC3 soundtracks (ripped from
movie DVDs) on a standalone player.

Basically, the trick is to author a
mini dvd on CD-R by muxing the AC3 with
a dummy Mpeg video file.

The dummy Mpeg video file I use is a blue screen
captured at 352x288. The file size is 40 Mo,
and the duration is 100 minutes.
This file has to be as small as possible of course
because there is no moving video, it's just a blue screen !
But I haven't managed yet to reduze the size...

Anyway, I muxed this Mpeg with my AC3 to make a VOB
file and author a DVD on CD-R with it, and it works !
I can read my AC3 soundtracks on my standalone dvd
player (I'm lucky enough that it can read mini DVDs)
(It's a YAMADA DVD2100, which I bought 39 Euros in France)

Any suggestion to improve this method ?
Is it possible to reduce the file size of the Mpeg?
Does someone know a better method ?
I'd like to know...

I use SmartRipper to complete the mission:

1.Run SmartRipper,Select "settings=>Movie=>every chapter",then you can see all chapters on DVD.

2.Get into "Stream processing",only select "Audio AC3(6ch)".

3.Specify output folder in "Target",then press "Start".

1 google for "transcode"
1.1 install transcode, learn how to use it
2 rip the audio straight off the dvd
2.1 edit/master the audio (if needed)
3 put the audio into a container (if needed)
4 play it

Foobar 2000 can perfectly tag ac3 files (I use v0.8 beta 5)

There's Nero AC3 plugin at http://neroplugins.cd-rw.org. It should work together with foobar2000 diskwriter (foo_nero) too (I haven't tested it though). It's based on ffmpeg. Doom9 audio FAQ says about it:

Transcoding the AC3, as rjamorim told you already, is only wirth the hassle if you reduce the size by at least 40% IMO. The only compression formats thats currently capable of doing this AFAIK is HE-AAC in the Nero Encoder. All other options are void, simply keep the AC3 un changed .....
