WMA Codec update

Hi
i use lame 3.90.3 to encode my cds
but i would like to give a try to the microsoft wma codec/encoder

where can i download ?
is it free or?
i need only the encoder

Maybe you'll change your mind after reading this:

There's also "WMA Pro" which seems to sound better than "WMA Standard" at very low bitrates, but there's no hardware support for WMA Pro yet.
WMA is a set of closed-sourced codecs which can be (currently) used for free AFAIK.
Unfortunately I don't know where you can get the encoder.
(To be honest: I don't care much about WMA since either the quality is poor (standard) or there's no hardware support (pro))

just give it a try, think twice if you want it for archival purpose

This is what I predict
If, If.......One day M$ bankrupt, WMA will also be gone together with it

Indeed, I gave WMA 9.1 STD a go a few weekends ago and finally discovered for myself why everyone bashes this format so much. The only level I wasn't able to easily ABX was the highest VBR level available in WMP10, as well as lossless of course. And I'm not even that good yet at ABXing either, so what does that tell you?

To test Ripping CDs to Windows Media Audio 9 Codec, you will have to update to Windows Media Player 9.

Well, AAC won't be gone.

one more thing,
WMA is inferior to mp3 at higher bitrates (>128kbps)

hahahhahahahah, WMA STD or even PRO is loosing to AAC at lower bitrates!
I tried it myself, iTunes4.6/Nero aac at 80 or 96 is better than WMA STD

at 64 kbps, Vorbis, Nero HE-AAC, iTunes4.6  AAC sounds better than wma

......................
a few years back, WMA is the best codec for bitrate 64kbps
but now NO MORE, Its not a winner at any bitrate.......so sad...........pittyful m$
