Yeah, nowadays people in general use PCs less and less. PCs are difficult to work with, they need maintenance, lengthy updates, etc. etc. etc. Your smartphone or tablet on the other hand is instantly available and works uninterruptedly.

Secondly, most people don't actually care what they listen to, they just enable whatever crap youtube or spotify throws at them. Keeping your music organized on your PC is tedious while online you can just click "like" and that's it.

I'd migrated to some streaming service a long time ago but none of them have all the music I like (some 5500 tracks at the moment).

I've seen lengthy updates on smartphones that feel like an eternity and smartphones do require some degree of maintenance even if all you worry about is the battery in it.  What's difficult about the PC usage?  Day to day it's pretty straight forward and easy to use.  It's never been hard for me to keep any of my files organized either.

Don't ask me about PC maintenance - it's my job.  :D

Thanks for depressing me there with that.  So the kids of today are going to be like the old people of yesteryear who couldn't even turn on a computer crowd?

What's difficult about the PC usage?

Other than what was already posted, it's not even just about the difficulty of usage - it's also the fact that you (generally) can't effortlessly carry a PC with you wherever you go. You can't just decide you want to listen to some music, take your PC out of your pocket, start playing some music, and put it back in your pocket. Unless being "at the PC" is your default leisure state (which is predominantly a millennial thing), using PCs to listen to music is just inconvenient.

At home I like to use my PC for playing music.  On the go or outside on a nice day I like to use my smartphone for playing music.  It all depends on if I'm interested in listening to music or not.  Not how convenient it is to be listening to it to a certain way.  At home I prefer to put the phone down and even on the go I prefer not to use it that much.

Meanwhile. Yes, I use my PC to listen to music. And I have a pair of Sennheiser RS 180 headphones, which have a reach that covers most of my house, so I can listen to the music around where I go. I take my phone with me when I'm out, as well as my AirPods Pro, but I don't tend to listen to music when I'm out, it's too distracting.

Since mp3-s are downloaded from Napster and before, the vast majority doesn't care the quality. Those days the network wasn't enough for listening music or Internet didn't exist or you needed use you telephone for Internet or rent another telephone number. Therefore, people bought CDs, tapes or vinyls because other way didn't exist.

But now, is easiest don't keep CDs or you music collection on PC. The vast majority only wants something for doesn't hear the silence. Also, Android 11 removed the default video and music players.

Interesting topic! Everyone has their own listening style and so they choose a playback system that works for them. All power to ya!

In my particular case, I spend a lot of time at the desk working on this or that. The music from my personal collection on the PC is running all day long. I have spent the time to organize everything very well, and therefore have no "maintenance" issues with regard to my music library. PCs seem to be pretty stable these days, so I very am happy with my desk setup. I only use streaming services to discover and obtain new music sources.

For mobile use, I have purchased a FiiO X7 (Android) DAP that has its own player called "FiiO Music". Since I am a playlist-oriented listener, I have assembled over 100 playlists (so far) that satisfy my listening habits. The PC and DAP are sync'ed together by a utility I wrote to send playlists and FLAC files from the PC to the DAP. For my particular listening style (playlist-oriented), this setup works very well for me. I hardly have to touch anything, except to introduce new material into my library.

I find it interesting to hear about the listening styles of other folks and how they implement equipment to fulfil their listening desires. Interesting topic. Thanks.

I suspect, but have no data, that domestic ownership of PCs in general is on the way down.  With their primary usage being games and Internet, those purposes are much more conveniently served these days.  Even for me (I regard myself as a power user), an iPad and a WiFi/AirPrint printer deals with the vast majority of my day-do-day tech usage (including right now).

Background music for me comes from broadcast services via digital TV or good old old-fashioned radio.  For other members of my family, they have it on a digital home assistant (I don't have a great Internet connection, but I'm not sure I would use one of those myself even if I did have a good connection).

And yes, PC maintenance is a pain in the arse.  Microsoft keeps ratcheting up the processing power required for a smooth user experience, driving users to replace their units, and Intel keeps providing more power for Microsoft to exploit.  You can't even ignore that and stick with what you've got (not easily anyway) – stuff stops working.  I could have stuck on Win98 – but the printer broke and new printers had the new-fangled USB interface, which Win98 PCs did not!  But I've not gone beyond Win7, and I've seen the way a more recent Windows PC makes itself unavailable for use while it insists on doing a system update.

There are alternatives to Windows of course, and they're getting slicker all the time, but if you want to do any more than ordinary things you're on your own and you'd better set a lot of time aside for IT Department work.  Try running a specialist USB hardware device from a Linux machine – chances are they only supply a Windows software, and rely on a recent Windows to boot.

I am gradually doing more and more on my Linux box, but still have to revert to Windows for some things... but the birth of the PC was my era, and I've grown up knowing how to manipulate them to my bidding.  I'm certain younger people know far less about it, unless they go specifically into IT as a career.
It's your privilege to disagree, but that doesn't make you right and me wrong.

Even if PC remained popular, why would internet searches for audio players stay strong? You find a good player and stick with it for as long as it does everything you need, probably forever because most core feature development for audio players was done 15 years ago.

Times have changed. I recently mentioned among colleagues that I prefer to buy music on Bandcamp so I could store downloaded files in my offline music collection. The reaction was “wow, this is strange”. And suddenly I understood that these days I'm a weirdo that (almost) doesn't use Spotify. Well, I have to admit, listening to music from your local storage on a PC is kind of old school already.

I'm a professor, and a topic that comes up regularly with other professors is just how poorly current students understand computers. Of course members of this group tend to be fairly high computer knowledge, but I'm talking about really basic things. About half of college students (estimated across universities where I know people) could navigate folder structure and open or a save a file to some location on a computer they are using. And only about a third know how to save a file they create on a workstation computer, and move it to somewhere they control (e.g., email it to self, save on a flash drive, upload to cloud storage).
