up-down staircase procedure

I remember reading about this topic a few years ago, but couldnt remember the name of the mthod, and found no references.

What do you think of this method for non-scientists for finding unknown thresholds in common monotonic degradation mechanisms such as lossy compression and bitdepth/samplerate?


I cant see why it would be impossible to extend/complement foo_abx with a staircase test-plugin for foobar where an ordered list of degraded sourcefiles is presented by the user?
