When i play cd what to choose 16bit padded to 32bit or 24bit paddet to 32bit?

Seems to me that 16bit padded to 32bit .
rights I?

If your soundcard supports padded samples, then yes, 16 padded to 32 is your best choice.  Otherwise, just 16.

BTW, what cards support padding, and to what values? Eg. sblive 5.1 ? (supports?)

Afaik no sblive card supports padding, but I can be wrong .
One of those which support it for sure: Terratec DMX 6fire (24 bit padded to 32).

Is it that my card supports ##bit padded to 32bit if I have not encountered any problem by selecting this option?

Also, do I need to use dither [16 bit] if I listen CDDA? My card is Audigy1.

Use 16-bit fixed-point (no padding) with Audigy1.

But is it that I should still use 16-bit w/o padding even though I use kX driver?
Also, anyone knows whether dither is necessary to CDDA + 16-bit fixed-pt?

Padding only makes sense with sample sizes that are not DWORD aligned, ie. 24 bits. Two 16 bit samples can fit into one DWORD, however, so PCI bus transfer should not be a problem. Besides, I don't think kX supports >16 bit formats yet. (Not sure any of the chips are even capable of it... anyone care to comment?)

If I use 16-bit padded to 32-bit + Kernel Streaming, EAX effect, eg Concert Hall, does *NOT* work.
If I use 16-bit dither + Kernel Streaming, EAX effect *DOES* work.
[My card is Audigy1]

Basically, the EMU10k1/10k2 chip can't accept audio with bitdepth higher than 16-bit.
Audigy2 has a separate chip, added to 10k2, which takes care of frequencies between 48kHz and 96kHz, and 16 to 24 bits depth.
So, basically, this is some kind of "hardware hotifx" to Audigy, called Audigy2.

When playing 16-bit lossless formats, including cdda, dither is not necessary.

I always set the vol lower than 0.00 dB, so I need to use dither.

Also, is it that if i use DSP, then I need to use dither [for cdda]?

From theoretical/technical point of view it's good to use dithering if you're doing something to the samples (think of it as a kind of smart smoothing that reduces roundoff errors introduced in signal processing). But it's very unlikely that you'll really hear any difference between dithered and undithered sound (at least not at 16 bit or higher resolution).
